Live Commentary

  • So that's it from me on a decent night for anyone of a Newcastle persuasion. This is Nicholas McGee, signing off!
  • Full-Time at the Luzhniki Stadium and that is an excellent result for Newcastle in the circumstances. It isn't a game that will live in memory but the Magpies have given themselves a very good chance of progressing to the last-eight by becoming the first side to deny Anzhi a home win in the Europa League this term.
  • 90' + 3'
Late chance for Newcastle as Steven Taylor balloons over from close range, that should be that.
  • 90'
    Substitution Andrey Eschenko Arseniy Logashov
  • 90'
There will be three minutes of added time.
  • 87'
Samuel Eto'o finds room on the break but again he fails to test Rob Elliot, who gathers comfortably after Steven Taylor had made life difficult for the striker.
  • 84'
    Substitution Oleg Shatov M. Carcela
  • 84'
    Substitution Yohan Cabaye Cheikh Tiote
  • 84'
Six minutes to go in this one, Anzhi have laboured without creating much and it is Newcastle that perhaps look the more likely of the two teams to score.
  • 81'
Newcastle are enjoying a god spell of possession at the moment and appear to be offering more as an attacking force. Gabriel Obertan's pace is proving difficult to deal with and the Russians are having to be alert defensively to preserve their clean sheet.
  • 78'
If Anzhi are to find a goal, it will likely come from Eto'o. The veteran hits a long-range free kick but the ball flies high and wide.
  • 76'
    Substitution Vurnon Anita Steven Taylor
  • 76'
With Ben Arfa now off the field, Sissoko is now Newcastle's main threat on the counter, he breaks and lifts a cross into the path of Ameobi but the striker is penalised before he can get his head to the ball.
  • 73'
Decent effort from Vurnon Anita, who curls a shot from 35 yards out which goes just over the crossbar.
  • 71'
We're into the last 20 minutes and this one is still anyone's game. Neither side looks like grasping the initiative in truth.
  • 68'
How will Anzhi respond to that glorious opportunity for Newcastle? The Russians are pressing again but the Magpies remain a solid and compact defensive unit.
  • 65'
That proved to be Ben Arfa's last touch of the ball in this game as he is replaced by Shola Ameobi. Shatov has a go from distance for Anzhi but fires miles over the bar.
  • 64'
Substitution Hatem Ben Arfa Shola Ameobi
  • 63'
Hatem Ben Arfa has just wasted a glorious chance for Newcastle, the former Marseille man is played in on the right hand side of the box by Yohan Cabaye but with only the keeper to beat he opts to go for the chip which Gabulov gratefully collects.
  • 60'
Excellent save from Rob Elliot, the ball breaks to Eto'o on the edge of the box and the Newcastle keeper does well to get down to his right and produce a fine stop from the striker's vicious half-volley.
  • 58'
Anzhi have an optimistic shout for a penalty turned down after a left-wing cross struck Yanga-Mbiwa close to his arm, the referee was perfectly positioned however and waved the protests away.
  • 55'
We've seen more of Moussa Sissoko as a box-to-box presence in this game, the midfielder has had to do a lot of tidying up from deep and has performed relatively well.
  • 52'
Anzhi have certainly started the second period the more purposeful of the two sides but are still struggling to craft any real chances. Not much has changed since the first half.
  • 49'
Half an opening for the hosts as Traore works some space but James Perch is there to block his shot.
  • 46'
Anzhi get the second half underway
  • The referee blows for the interval and although it has been an uninspiring game, Newcastle manager Alan Pardew will be pleased that his side have kept the hosts at bay without ever really being tested.
  • 45'
Anzhi push forward once more but are again flagged for offside. That could be the last noteworthy action of the half.
  • 42'
Just three minutes to go to half-time and it has been a very professional display from Newcastle. The visitors look composed at the back and do carry a threat going forward.
  • 39'
We finally have a shot on goal and it comes from Eto'o, the Cameroonian fires from distance but Rob Elliot is equal to it and palms the ball over the bar.
  • 37'
The hosts are yet to lose a home game in any competition this season but have yet to really impose themselves on this game. Guus Hiddink will surely the chance to speak with his players at the break.
  • 34'
    Yellow Card Massadio Haidara
  • 34'
Anzhi waste a good opportunity as a free kick on the right hand side is whipped straight into Newcastle's first defender Yohan Cabaye, who immediately clears the danger.
  • 31'
A let-off for the visitors as Eto'o tries to thread a ball through for Traore but the Ivorian is flagged for offside.
  • 29'
It's Newcastle who are dictating the pace a little more in the last few minutes, Anzhi seem to be still adapting to the loss of Willian.
  • 26'
Rarely have I watched a half of football with no shots on goal, but that is what has happened so far in Moscow. A poor game, but I don't think Alan Pardew will mind that too much.
  • 23'
    Substitution Willian Lacina Traore
  • 23'
A big blow for Anzhi but a big plus for Newcastle as Willian is substituted due after appearing to sustain an injury to his thigh in the earlier challenge with Yanga-Mbiwa. The winger is replaced by towering forward Lacina Traore.
  • 20'
We're approaching the halfway point in the first half and Newcastle look to have weathered the mini-storm. This has been a very disciplined showing from Pardew's men so far.
  • 17'
Anzhi are beginning to up the ante here and it is the pace of Willian that is causing problems for Newcastle. He chases a ball down the right but is eventually shepherded away from goal by Yanga-Mbiwa.
  • 14'
Half a chance for Anzhi as Oleg Shatov breaks down the left, however Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa is alert and is there to intercept his pull back.
  • 12'
Defensively, Newcastle look well organised and at present this isn't a game for the purist. Still I suspect Alan Pardew will be quite pleased with how the match has gone so far.
  • 9'
Not much to report at all so far really, it's a very even contest and that will surely suit Newcastle just fine.
  • 6'
Anzhi have seen more of the ball in the last few minutes and are beginning to dictate play. No real chances for either side yet however.
  • 3'
The visitors have made a relatively good start, they look assured on the ball and are doing most of the pressing in the early stages.
  • 1'
    Newcastle get the game underway!
  • It promises to be a strange atmosphere in this one, with most of the stadium empty. Over 70 Newcastle fans have braved the long journey from Tyneside, and they will hope to be rewarded with a win.
  • The two teams emerge from the tunnel and we are ready to go at the Luzhniki Stadium.
  • So the big team news is that Hatem Ben Arfa returns to action and is likely to play as a false nine, for Anzhi the danger men will undoubtedly be former Barcelona striker Samuel Eto'o and Brazilian winger Willian, both of whom start this game.
  • Newcastle: Elliot; Simpson, Yanga-Mbiwa, Perch, Haidara; Cabaye, Anita, Ben Arfa, Marveaux, Obertan; Sissoko. Subs: Alnwick, Santon, Bigirimana, Tiote, Steven Taylor, Ameobi, Campbell
  • Anzhi Makhachkala: Gabulov; Yeschenko, Joao Carlos, Ewerton, Zhirkov; Jucilei, Diarra, Ahmedov; Willian, Eto'o, Shatov. Subs: Pomazan, Gadzhibekov, Tagirbekov, Logashov, Carcela-Gonzalez, Traore, Smolov
  • We start with the two team line-ups...
