A late penalty ensured Burkina Faso will travel to the second leg with a slender advantage but the Africa Cup of Nations finalists know they face a battle to reach the World Cup.

Burkina Faso will look to qualify for its first World Cup when it travels to Algeria for the second leg of their playoff.

Paul Put's side won the home leg 3-2 in October thanks to a late penalty from Aristide Bance, but the team knows it has a tough task denying Algeria, for which a 1-0 or 2-1 victory will prove enough to progress under the away goals rule.

Qualification would complete a stellar year for Burkina Faso, which reached the final of the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in February before being beaten 1-0 by Nigeria. The visitors, who booked their playoff berth after finishing a point clear of Congo at the top of Group E, will be boosted by the return of Lorient striker Alain Traore, who missed the first leg due to a thigh injury.

Despite needing just a draw to qualify for the finals in Brazil next year, defender Saidou Panandetiguiri insists his side will not be setting out with a defensive mindset Tuesday.

"It will be bad if we go there to draw," he said. "We have to go there to win. If we go to play defensively, it will be difficult. We have to try to play in their half."

Algeria coach Vahid Halilhodzic was in an equally bullish mood ahead of the showdown. His side won five of its six matches in the previous round to finish as the winner of Group H, and the Bosnian revealed how much the first-leg defeat played on his mind.

"I never felt such a desire to win as is the case this time," he said. "The challenge is of course very motivating. The defeat in the first leg in Ouagadougou stuck in my craw. Believe me, I found hardly any sleep during the week following the game."

Midfielder Medhi Lacen is hopeful that the spirit within the squad will help Algeria to a fourth World Cup finals appearance.

"We've always been united," he said. "In good times and bad times. Even when we were eliminated from CAN 2013 we stuck together. I think one of the keys to this game will be not conceding a goal at home; it is very important and then it is up to us to play our football. There is no reason why it won't work out."
