Player Ratings: Arsenal 1-3 Bayern Munich

Toni Kroos, Thomas Muller and Mario Mandzukic scored the goals as the Bavarians gained a decisive advantage at the Emirates Stadium despite Lukas Podolski's header

By Oliver Platt

  • Wojciech Szczesny

    Wojciech Szczesny

Did not have much time to react to Van Buyten's header, but he might have done better than to palm it straight to Muller. Otherwise could do little to hold Bayern off and tipped a powerful Kroos drive over the bar.

  • Bacary Sagna
    30

    3.00

    Bacary Sagna

Sometimes cut a frustrated figure and let his emotions spill into reckless tackling, for which he collected a yellow card. Attacked to reasonable effect but couldn't engineer any real scoring opportunities.

  • Per Mertesacker
    30
    83
    1.00

Per Mertesacker Flop of the Match

A horror show early on. His attempt to block Kroos' volley was abysmal and he then failed to follow Van Buyten at a corner, allowing the center back to force a save out of Szczesny from which Muller buried the rebound. His passing out of defense was often sloppy, too.

  • Thomas Vermaelen
    19
    70
    1.50

    Thomas Vermaelen

Does not look comfortable at all at left back, frequently being caught out of position and defending with a general indecision. Lahm tormented him on the flank.

  • Laurent Koscielny
    44
    36
    3.00

    Laurent Koscielny

A marked improvement on some of his defensive partners. He read the game well and moved with pace to cope with the runs of Muller. Might have done better to cut out the cross from which Mandzukic scored the third goal, though.

  • Mikel Arteta
    12
    63
    2.50

    Mikel Arteta

Too often floated in and out of the game. Unconvincing in his ability to demonstrate the control he exerts against run-of-the-mill Premier League opposition on the European stage.

  • Jack Wilshere
    109
    10
    3.00

    Jack Wilshere

As ever, looked most likely to instigate something for Arsenal. He found space difficult to come by in the middle of the park but did wriggle free to drive at the Bayern defense on a number of occasions.

  • Aaron Ramsey
    13
    66
    2.00

    Aaron Ramsey

Technically skilled but his Bayern counterparts were in a different league when it came to the mental side of the game. Failed to intercept Muller's cross to Kroos for the opening goal and was too often slow to react to the play.

  • Santi Cazorla
    20
    49
    2.50

    Santi Cazorla

Can only influence the game in a limited capacity on the right, where he lacks the pace to escape his markers with regularity. Did show some moments of invention but not as much as we have come to expect.

  • Lukas Podolski
    81
    22
    2.50

    Lukas Podolski

Headed in from close range to give Arsenal hope but was too often entirely anonymous and made little attempt to track Lahm when he attacked down the flank.

  • Theo Walcott
    32
    50
    2.50

    Theo Walcott

After some bright moments early on, he faded out of the game until moved to the right. On the flank, though, it was the same story, as he whipped in a superb cross for Giroud soon after taking up the position before dropping out of involvement.

Substitutions

  • Tomas Rosicky

    2.50

    Tomas Rosicky

Arsenal had found little joy through the middle in the first 70 minutes and he had no more luck. Did link up with Wilshere on one or two occasions but to no real effect.

  • Olivier Giroud
    47
    30
    2.50

    Olivier Giroud

Hit a powerful volley that Neuer blocked immediately after coming on, but otherwise got little change out of the strong Van Buyten and Dante.

  • Manuel Neuer
    37
    37
    2.50

    Manuel Neuer

A spectator, as has become familiar to him in this team, in the first half, but should have come to claim the corner which Podolski headed in to give Arsenal a way back into the tie. Denied Giroud without knowing much about it before he punched a Wilshere shot up into the air before claiming at the second attempt.

  • Dante
    46
    14
    3.00

    Dante

Successfully held up Walcott when the striker did find space in the first half and allowed his teammates to retreat to defensive positions. Given excellent protection by the midfield in front of him but did what he needed to do without fuss.

  • Daniel Van Buyten
    61
    11
    3.50

    Daniel Van Buyten

Picked out as a potential weak link by many in the absence of Holger Badstuber and Jerome Boateng, but he proved a commanding presence at the back. Walcott's pace rarely troubled him and he attacked the corner from which Muller would double Bayern's lead.

  • Philipp Lahm
    110
    14
    3.50

Philipp Lahm Top of the Match

Attacked enthusiastically into the space vacated by Muller and supplied some dangerous crosses, the pick of which was bundled home by Mandzukic. Had also set up the striker with a superb delivery which was headed just wide earlier in the game.

  • David Alaba
    49
    17
    3.00

    David Alaba

Only intermittently troubled at left back. Sagna got forward to reasonable effect in the first half and Walcott was lively for a short spell after moving to the right, but generally Alaba coped well and had the pace to hold off the England international.

  • Franck Ribéry
    49
    20
    3.00

    Franck Ribéry

Spread some superb passes around the Arsenal half, particularly to Lahm as the right back advanced down the flank. Not much of a goal threat himself, however, before he was replaced by Robben just after the hour mark.

  • Javi Martínez
    60
    17
    3.50

    Javi Martínez

An imposing presence in central midfield and thwarted many of the Gunners' attempts to attack through the midfield. The hosts' forays were noticeably confined to the flanks and Martinez can take credit for that. Was one of three Bayern players, however, who stood watching as Wilshere's corner dropped to Podolski.

  • Bastian Schweinsteiger
    64
    15
    3.00

    Bastian Schweinsteiger

Sometimes a little sloppy in possession, but aside from one spell in the second half Bayern had a grip on the game which was a product of his midfield partnership with Martinez. Worked energetically to get up and down the field.

  • Toni Kroos
    77
    11
    3.50

    Toni Kroos

Opened the scoring with a sweetly-struck volley that came at him at a difficult height. Consistently threatened by drifting into pockets of space until he was pulled off for the more defensive Luiz Gustavo as Arsenal grew in strength in the later stages.

  • Mario Mandzukic
    167
    13
    3.50

    Mario Mandzukic

Worked extremely hard in attack, organising Bayern's first line of defense when Arsenal were in possession. Came close to putting the tie to bed when he headed narrowly wide from Lahm's cross before the right back picked him out again with a lower delivery which he forced into the net.

  • Thomas Müller
    62
    13
    3.00

    Thomas Müller

Drifted closer to Mandzukic but Koscielny dealt with his runs fairly effectively. Got on the score sheet, though, when he stabbed home a loose ball in front of goal from close range after Szczesny could only push out Van Buyten's header.

Substitutions

  • Arjen Robben
    64
    24
    3.00

    Arjen Robben

Gave Bayern a more direct, counterattacking outlet after replacing Ribery and freed Lahm to cross for Mandzukic and seal victory.

  • Luiz Gustavo
    38
    16
    3.00

    Luiz Gustavo

A timely introduction by Jupp Heynckes. He gave Bayern a more stable platform when Schweinsteiger and Martinez were asked serious questions for the first time and soon after he was brought on the visitors added a third goal.

  • Mario Gomez
    26
    56

    Mario Gomez

A late replacement for Mandzukic but only had time to blast one chance from a difficult angle high and wide.
