Player Ratings: Costa Rica 2-1 Mexico

Mexico was disappointing yet again, but managed to limp into a World Cup playoff anyway.

    K. Navas

Was confronted with too much quality, too often and still managed to make some big stops. Pushed the ball off Chicharito's feet ahead of the Mexico goal but could do little about Peralta's follow up. A second-half stop denied Raul Jimenez another round of heroics.

  • Bryan Oviedo

    Bryan Oviedo

A great performance to help keep Mexico to one goal, especially once things got desperate for El Tri.

  • Cristian Gamboa

    3.50

    Cristian Gamboa

Did well coming out of defense on the left and combining with the midfield, his high point came when one of his constant overlapping runs allowed him to assist Saborio's goal.

  • Giancarlo González

    Giancarlo González

Perhaps less involved in breaking up play than the other members of the central defensive trio, but still helped his team to an excellent result.

  • J. Acosta

    J. Acosta

Put himself right in the mix, and did well to disrupt the Mexican attack.

  • M. Umaña

    M. Umaña

Made an absolutely vital block on Peralta in the first half. Costa Rica's five-man defense allowed the fullbacks to get forward more than usual, but he wasn't as effective as Gamboa.

    Christian Bolaños

Some good play through the midfield on a night where presence in the center of the park was desperately needed.

  • Celso Borges

    Celso Borges

The Costa Rican midfield seemed content to cede the possession and passing battle in the prime real estate and stick to working the ball down the flanks.

  • Y. Tejeda

    Y. Tejeda

Was mostly anonymous as Mexico played well through the middle. Was unsurprisingly withdrawn early.

  • Bryan Ruiz

    Bryan Ruiz

A fantastic strike to briefly give Costa Rica the lead. His country's most dangerous outlet in the first half before coming off shortly following the interval.

  • Joel Campbell

    Joel Campbell

Had a mostly quiet game until he played the ball that fed Gamboa to cross to Saborio for the winning goal.

    A. Saborío Top of the Match

Replaced Ruiz just after the half and scored an absolutely massive goal that almost knocked Mexico out of the World Cup.

  • Francisco Guillermo Ochoa

    Francisco Guillermo Ochoa

Not too much he could really do about either goal, a fine strike from Ruiz and an open header from Saborio, but he did little to cover himself in glory in a huge game.

  • Hugo Ayala

    Hugo Ayala

The Mexican back line actually limited Costa Rica's chances, no mean feat given the potent Ticos counterattack, but a few lapses almost cost El Tri dearly.

  • Jorge Emmanuel Torres

    Jorge Emmanuel Torres

Ran a fine line with his physicality bordering on recklessness, and gave away several dangerous free kicks.

  • Miguel Arturo Layun

    Miguel Arturo Layun

A quiet night from a player who's had an up and down year for El Tri. None of his marauding, penetrating runs in a game Mexico could have used a second outlet.

  • Rafa Márquez
    38
    15
    2.00

    Rafa Márquez

Like last game, a good performance absolutely ruined by some poor defending as he left Saborio have a free header for the winner.

  • Christian Giménez
    29
    11
    2.50

    Christian Giménez

Started well with a lot of energy and made things happen, but faded as the game went on. Was gassed and making stupid challenges at the end of the game.

  • C. Peña
    16
    23
    2.50

    C. Peña

The Mexican midfield had plenty of possession, but struggled to create any real offense apart from a decent opening period, and was given a rough time by Costa Rican counters.

  • J. Aquino
    6
    39
    2.00

    J. Aquino

Despite Mexico's dominance in midfield, he struggled at times to deal with the breakthrough running of the Costa Rican players, and was the first Mexican player withdrawn.

  • J. Zavala
    11
    26
    2.50

    J. Zavala

Did his job of keeping possession in Costa Rica's half, but the rest of his teammates in the midfield struggled to do anything with their extended time on the ball.

  • Javier Hernández

Javier Hernández Flop of the Match

A disastrous night continues the poor run of form for Mexico's highest-profile player. Missed a wide open net early on and his didn't improve much.

  • O. Peralta
    53
    5
    3.00

    O. Peralta

Was the lesser part of the embarrassing mix-up that cost El Tri a goal early in the game, but redeemed himself with a powerful strike.

Substitutions

  • Giovani dos Santos

    32

    Giovani dos Santos

Was brought on as a sub for Aquino but showed little ability to change the game in El Tri's favor.

  • I. Brizuela

    I. Brizuela

The USA-born midfielder was thrown on as a second-half sub but couldn't help his team.

  • R. Jiménez

    15

    R. Jiménez

Came on as a second-half sub and nearly repeated his heroics from Friday when he forced a fine, but it was not to be.
