The Galaxy joined the Seattle Sounders as the second MLS side in the CCL semifinals, advancing past Costa Rican side Herediano.
Nearly 20 minutes in, Juninho floated a corner kick to the far post. Omar Gonzalez headed down and off a defender to open the scoring.
A scoring draw would have sent the visiting side through, so the match stayed tense until midway through the second half. With 20 minutes left in the match, Jose Villarreal notched the winner in spectacular fashion. The U.S. U-20 striker spun in a 360 to elude two defenders and curl a shot into the top corner from outside the box.
The last 10 minutes featured three goals. First, substitute Michael Stephens angled a cloaked ball in the box to free Robbie Keane. The Irish striker tucked it inside the far post. Next, Elias Aguilar scored Herediano's equalizer, scissoring home a Waylon Francis cross while falling down. The last came deep in stoppage time, when Stephens took a quick free kick before the defensive wall was set. Jack McBean curled around the goalkeeper to seal the heavy victory.
