Favored Nigeria was stunned by a last-minute goal by Burkina Faso's Alain Traore, settling for a 1-1 draw in the two teams' opening match at the African Cup of Nations. Trarore's stoppage-time strike cancelled out a goal from Emmanuel Emenike, as both sides claimed a share of the spoils.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria had control early and could have scored the opener in the seventh minute when Brown Ideye looked in on goal, but the situation was dealt with by Bakary Kone to keep the Stallions level.

Nigeria's goal finally came in the 23rd minute, with a good ball floated beyond the Stallions’ defense from Chelsea's John Mikel Obi. Ideye’s back-heeled pass was bundled in by Emenike for the go-ahead goal.

The second half started with the Stallions pushing forward and Moumouni Dagano almost gave them the equalizer in the 49th minute. A few minutes later, Jonathan Pitroipa went down in the box and asked for a penalty, but the referee waved play on.

Burkina Faso continued to push forward through substitute Wilfred Sanou on the right wing, and Dagano tested goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama on 62 minutes, but the keeper parried for a corner kick.

Ikechukwu Uche came on for Emenike in the 57th minute and could have scored Nigeria's second in the 65th off a cut back from Ahmed Musa, but the player blasted way off target.

Nigeria remained in the driver's seat until Celtic's Efe Ambrose received his second yellow card of the game for a foul on Pitroipa.

Nigeria was forced to pay for its numerous missed chances, as Traore came off the bench and snatched a shock equalizer in the 94th minute.

The Burkinabes will next contend with the determined Walya Antelopes of Ethiopia, while the Super Eagles must find a way around the Chipolopolo of Zambia on Friday at the Mbombela Stadium in the next go around of group games. All four teams are on level pegging with a point apiece and one goal for and one conceded.
