Player Ratings: Manchester City 1-1 Real Madrid

A defensive horror show in the opening 20 minutes deserved more punishment for City than Benzema's lone goal and the introduction of Javi Garcia saved the hosts tactically

    Joe Hart

His very audible swearing as Madrid took the lead was justified as the defence in front of him fell asleep. Reacted well on occasion when Khedira skipped past the back line.

  • Maicon

    Maicon

Unforgivably lax in letting Benzema run past him for the opening goal and generally hapless as a wing-back but firmed up more when City switched to four at the back.

  • Vincent Kompany

    Vincent Kompany

Torn apart in the first 20 minutes by Ronaldo as his struggles this season continued. Should have been booked late on, resorting to cynical physicality as he kept being outpaced.

  • Pablo Zabaleta

    Pablo Zabaleta

Unfairly booked for a perfectly legitimate challenge on Di Maria, the Argentine made a much better left-back than substituted specialist Kolarov when moved there after the first quarter.

  • Aleksandar Kolarov

    Aleksandar Kolarov

Did not even offer a token challenge to prevent the cross for Benzema’s goal. Pushed into midfield as City reshaped but no surprise to see him sacrificed at half-time, having shown precious little at either end.

  • Matija Nastasic

    Matija Nastasic

Conceded multiple fouls when going forward for set-pieces and bunched up with his fellow centre-backs for Benzema's goal. The youngster compares evenly with his more experienced colleagues, however.

  • Samir Nasri

    Samir Nasri

Totally anonymous in the first half and his withdrawal for Tevez after an hour was no surprise.

  • David Silva

    David Silva

At the heart of City's brightening-up after half-time, linking with Aguero well, but faded slightly. Booked for a clumsy tackle on Benzema.

  • Yaya Touré

    Yaya Touré

Left completely isolated early on by Mancini’s formation and the tag-team of Modric and Khedira ran rampant as a result. Given more license to go forward after Garcia's introduction but never sparked into life. Lashed out stupidly at Ronaldo to pick up a yellow that will see him miss the Dortmund game.

  • Edin Dzeko

Edin Dzeko Flop of the Match

On the wrong wavelength completely, all the Bosnian did up front was get in the way in the first half. Perked up very slightly in the second but still guilty of wasting a chance for a winner with 10 minutes left.

  • Sergio Agüero
    42

    Sergio Agüero

His long run back to tackle Ronaldo was the highlight of the opening 45 minutes for the home crowd but events, and Aguero himself, got better in the second half. Wasted a couple of counterattacking chances but put away the penalty well in the absence of Balotelli. Taken off late on.

Substitutions

  • James Milner
    22
    34

    James Milner

A late arrival as Mancini looked for his fresh legs to exploit the visitors' 10 men - there wasn't time to do so.

  • Javi García
    21
    41
    3.50

    Javi García

A vitally important introduction tactically. Lessened Modric's huge influence and allowed his side a platform to attack. Did well just by being on the pitch.

  • Carlos Tévez
    28
    56
    3.00

    Carlos Tévez

Threatened in patches after coming on for the final half-hour, having one left-footed shot saved by Casillas.

  • Iker Casillas
    107
    21
    4.00

    Iker Casillas

Had almost nothing to do in the first half but reminded all of his quality in the second with a quite superb point-blank block from Aguero's finish.

  • Pepe
    78
    35
    3.50

    Pepe

Too strong for Dzeko most of the time and even got forward on the counter now and again.

  • Sergio Ramos
    82
    25
    3.50

    Sergio Ramos

Alert at the back, shutting down early City attacks in the minutes before Benzema broke through. Picked up his customary yellow card but generally more aware than the home forwards.

  • Fabio Coentrao
    71
    23
    3.00

    Fabio Coentrao

With most of City's threat coming centrally, the Portuguese could focus on trying to break down the left but did not often get too far. An important block from Maicon when the Brazilian went forward late on, though.

  • Arbeloa
    49
    53
    3.00

    Arbeloa

Some unsavoury exaggeration of challenges and deservedly booked in the first half. The penalty decision that prompted his second yellow, however, was far less clear. Unlucky.

  • Sami Khedira
    67
    41
    3.50

    Sami Khedira

Pushed up and pressed with vital energy to help overrun the City midfield in the early stages and, with a slightly lighter first touch, should have put Madrid two up when he darted past the snoozing back line. By the second period, though, he was making something of a habit of squandering half-decent chances.

  • Xabi Alonso
    79
    23
    3.50

    Xabi Alonso

In a mostly defensive mindset, the former Liverpool midfielder was notable for his covering for attacking full-backs and solid positioning.

  • Luka Modric

Luka Modric Top of the Match

For too long had the freedom of the City in the vast spaces between the three home centre-backs and their advanced midfielders. From early on, his vision, mobility and eye for a pass were evident as he showed the Premier League what it is missing. The effective introduction of Javi Garcia reduced his space and he was replaced by Callejon with 20 minutes left.

  • Ángel Di María
    69
    39
    2.50

    Ángel Di María

The least threatening of Madrid's attackers but did a good job of drawing fouls from a frustrated home side. Trudged off in the final minutes after a quiet game.

  • Cristiano Ronaldo
    140
    69
    3.50

    Cristiano Ronaldo

Roasted Kompany on several occasions but perhaps became overconfident as a result - the underhit chip that was cleared off the line might have been more clinical if City were in a more competitive mood, one felt. Incessantly booed by his former club's rival fans and did not quite get his moment to shut them up but still looked potent.

  • Karim Benzema
    113
    18
    3.50

    Karim Benzema

Could hardly have had it easier in opening the scoring but he constantly looked to expose the defence with his early runs. Often it just saw him called offside instead. Taken off as Mourinho reshuffled after the red card, having done his job but not truly shined.

Substitutions

  • Raphaël Varane
    60
    20

    Raphaël Varane

Brought on after Madrid went down to 10 men and held his ground well enough.

  • Raúl Albiol

    Raúl Albiol

A very late substitute for Di Maria.

  • José Callejón
    48
    30
    2.50

    José Callejón

His impact on the counter was limited as Madrid's game became focused on holding the point following Arbeloa's dismissal.
