Live Commentary

  • If this is a taste of what's to come in the Capital One Cup this season, then we're in for a real treat - particularly if 'Brendan's Babes' are playing. Thanks for joining us for this enthralling game.
  • Steve Clarke will be disappointed that his side could not capitalise on an early lead against such a youthful Liverpool side, but in truth either side could have taken the result today. Nuri Sahin played well and ended up with two goals, which will be encouraging for Rodgers, who will take heart after a disappointing defeat to Manchester United on Sunday. His senior side may be struggling, but these reserve players are defying all the odds.
  • Hugely impressive result for Brendan Rodgers and his side there, coming from behind against Premier League opposition with a massively inexperienced line-up. Jerome Sinclair end the game with a big smile on his face, and so he should - he's broken a record and got a win in his first ever senior game.
  • 90' + 3'
Last chance for West Brom - Foster slings in a deep free-kick and Mulumbu has a curled effort blocked, Carragher wins a free-kick..and that's it!
  • 90' + 1'
The ball is being flung into the box at every opportunity here, but the Baggies are still going out if the score stays like this. What a big win this would be for Brendan Rodgers' youngsters.
  • 90'
We'll have three more minutes here, assuming West Brom can't find an equaliser and force this one in to extra time...
  • 88'
Jones has taken every cross in this half - whatever Rodgers said to his goalkeeper at half-time has worked, with the Australian looking assured in the air following his calamitous mistake in the second minute.
  • 87'
    SubstitutionMarc-Antoine Fortune Yassine El Ghanassy
  • 85'
Now it's opening up. Both sides are looking to counter as the game takes on the shape of a basketball match, which I'm sure nobody - apart from nervous Liverpool fans - will be unhappy with.
  • 84'
West Brom almost equalise! Fortune has a crack at goal on the volley from the right side of the six yard box, but Jones is down smartly to turn it away. The ball may have hit the post as well, but that's a warning sign from Clarke's men.
  • 82'
    Goal Nuri Sahin
GOAL FOR LIVERPOOL!! It's two for Sahin and two for his side. Substitute Suso makes an immediate impact, driving at the West Brom defenders, feinting, and laying the ball off to Assaiti in behind on the left. He picks out Sahin in the middle, who duly delivers from six yards out. A superb team goal, and Rodgers will be delighted.
  • 81'
    SubstitutionSamed Yeşil Jerome Sinclair
  • 81'
    SubstitutionDani Pacheco Suso
  • 80'
And Sinclair enters the game here along with Suso - you can't say that Rodgers doesn't have the long-term health of the club at heart.
  • 77'
At 16 years and six days old, Jerome Sinclair is getting ready to come on - that will make him Liverpool's youngest ever player. Are the headlines written for a winner for the youngster already?
  • 73'
Great save from Foster! Sahin bends in a great free-kick from the left, and Coates gets up to head at goal, but the English keeper superbly denies the Uruguayan with strong hands. He's had a shaky night, but Foster is still a fantastic shot-stopper when called upon.
  • 70'
    SubstitutionR. Lukaku Shane Long
  • 69'
If West Brom are going to win it, they'll have to do it without the power of Romelu Lukaku. No worry though, as Shane Long enters the fray here - the match is set perfectly for a winner from the Irishman.
  • 66'
The tempo is settling down a little here, but both clubs are still getting forward at every opportunity. Suspicion of a handball by Billy Jones in the area for the hosts there, we'll wait for replays on that one...
  • 63'
Jones is flattened in the Liverpool goal after a collision with Carragher and Lukaku - the Australian gave a shout that the long ball was his to claim, but Carragher cleared nonetheless, and everybody ended up in a heap. Thankfully the big keeper is up on his feet now.
  • 61'
Pacheco stings the hands of Foster here with a 30-yard drive that the goalkeeper punches out for a corner. Again Foster looked uncomfortable in dealing with the ball, but the replays show that the shot dipped viciously - in the end, it was a good stop in difficult circumstances.
  • 58'
West Brom are probing here, and you suspect that Steve Clarke's men will be tightening up and buckling down to business in this second half. They've got more experience on the pitch, but Liverpool's players don't seem to have any fear of the occasion. Let's hope the final half an hour is as good as the first 60 minutes.
  • 55'
End to end here - Brad Jones pulls off a fine stop, stretching to deny West Brom after a great curling effort. Before that, Yesil could have given Liverpool the lead, but dallied in the area and was caught in possession with team mates in space. Both sides could have had three goals by now.
  • 52'
Pacheco hits the bar for Liverpool! The ball falls to the forward around 30 yards out on the left-hand side, and he curls a great effort beyond the static Foster, and unluckily finds the top of the bar. That would have been spectacular, with the keeper a mere spectator.
  • 51'
Foster almost drops another clanger! Yesil strikes it from around 20 yards, and although it's dipping and swerving, the English goalkeeper somehow manages to punches it down into the floor, through his legs, and over the ball. Odd to say the least, and hugely fortunate for Foster there - that have been very embarrassing, but he cracks a smile afterwards.
  • 46'
Explosive start to the second half here - first Pacheco feels that Olsson handled in the area (which he doesn't) then Downing fails to anticipate a wonderful cross when in a wonderful position to head it in, missing it completely. Then, Lukaku breaks through on goal for West Brom, but Jones is out quickly to smother. Phew!
  • 45'
Ad the second half is underway, with neither manager sufficiently moved to alter their line-up.
  • Both managers will be relatively happy with their side's displays so far, but there is room for improvement. Clarke will want his team to reassert themselves after a great start, while Rodgers will be hoping that Assaidi and Robinson can continue to link up well on the left to provide the opening.
  • That's the whistle, and the referee brings an entertaining first half to a close. Both sides will be disappointed by the nature of the goals they conceded, so in that respect, 1-1 is probably fair at the break. What is does mean, though, is that the second half is up for grabs for either side.
  • 45'
Close to a second for the Baggies here, as a free kick similar to the one that Brad Jones dropped for the opener is floated in. The keeper doesn't come this time, but thankfully there's no West Brom player on hand to get a header in, and the ball drifts a few feet wide of the goal.
  • 42'
    Yellow Card Andre Wisdom
  • 42'
...but Dorrans smashes the free-kick across goal, and it gets a flick out for a corner. Moments later, Carragher gets a vital block on a goal-bound shot from Mulumbu - that could easily have been 2-1, but great work from the English centre-back.
  • 41'
Chance for West Brom here as Wisdom picks up a booking after giving away a needless foul on Billy Jones right on the edge of his own penalty area. Rash from the young defender, but will it be costly...
  • 38'
    Yellow Card Y. Mulumbu
  • 37'
After an impressive run through the middle of Liverpool's team, Lukaku has a drive from 20 yards that Jones holds. The strike wasn't particularly impressive, but the strength and determination to get into that position was.
  • 36'
Assaidi looks really dangerous on the left, and is stretching West Brom's defence to its limits. The youngster is constantly looking to break inside on to his right foot, but has also tried to get round the outside on a number of occasions. He seems like a nightmare for a right-back to try and second-guess, with speed, skill and directness.
  • 33'
Assaidi and Robinson link up well on the left, and Henderson finds Downing on the right, whose cross is seen out for a corner. Following the corner, Coates almost makes contact with another good cross from the left - make no mistake, Liverpool are growing in confidence here.
  • 30'
Lukaku attempts to find a way through to goal but is dispossessed by Sahin on the edge of the area. The loan signing from Real Madrid has had a good half, and while the goal was fortuitous, he's showed that he's not afraid to have a strike at goal.
  • 27'
The game has settled down a little here - West Brom were threatening to steam-roll Rodgers' young side, but to their credit, Liverpool have now settled well, and look dangerous going forward.
  • 23'
Assaidi rolls a weak finish to Foster, but the breakaway move leading up to it was delightful - these Liverpool youngsters can move the ball about confidently. On the basis of the play so far, some of the first team squad will be looking over their shoulders if their abject Premier League form continues.
  • 21'
    SubstitutionLiam Ridgewell Craig Dawson
  • 21'
In between the goalkeepers dropping the ball like a hot potato, Samed Yesil should really have been celebrating a cherished goal, but he somehow contrived to head wide from four yards out. He won't get many better chances to open his Liverpool account, but let's hope for his sake that he won't be left waiting for too much longer.
  • 19'
Well, what a day to be a goalkeeper at the Hawthorns. If this is how's it's going to carry on, we're in for a treat - especially if it goes all the way to penalties...
  • 17'
    Goal Nuri Sahin
EQUALISER FOR LIVERPOOL! Another goalkeeper error, this time from Ben Foster. Nuri Sahin tries a speculative shot from well outside the penalty area, and it manages to squirm away from Foster's gloves and into the back of the net. Neither goalkeeper covering themselves in glory in this game so far.
  • 7'
Robinson gets forward down the left for Liverpool, but the youngster runs the ball out of play, much to the delight of the home supporters. It'll have to be better than that from the visitors.
  • 6'
West Brom have started very brightly here, and Liverpool need to get a grip on this game before it passes them by. Steve Clarke's side are really pushing to press home this early advantage.
  • 3'
    Goal Gabriel Sebastian Tamaş
GOAL!!! Disaster for Liverpool,, and Brad Jones in particular. An early free kick for the home side is lifted into the box from range, and Jones comes for it, only to fall and drop it at the feet of Gabriel Tamas, who dutifully lashes in a volley. Poor goalkeeping there, and yet again Liverpool are a goal down due to a keeping error.
  • 1'
And we're off at the Hawthorns - West Brom will be looking for an early goal to exploit the nerves of some of the Liverpool youngsters no doubt, but Brendan Rodgers' 'babes' were hugely impressive in the 5-3 victory against Young Boys, and will certainly be no pushovers.
  • A lovely touch here as the West Brom mascot has the number 96 on the back of his shirt to commemorate those who lost their lives in the Hillsborough disaster, with the fans applauding appreciatively.
  • The teams are out and it's handshakes all round, we're just about ready for kick-off.
  • Liverpool substitute Jerome Sinclair only made his debut for the club's Academy side in the NextGen game against Inter Milan last week, and the 16-year-old now finds himself in with a chance of making his first appearance for the first team tonight. How's that for a rapid promotion?
  • Brendan Rodgers has shown faith in a young starting line-up, including the likes of Danny Wisdom, Dani Pacheco, Samed Yesil and Oussama Assaidi. Steve Clarke will hoping that his young loan signing Romelu Lukaku can fire a few past an inexperienced Reds back line, with veteran Jamie Carragher under the spotlight after a less-than-convincing display against Young Boys in the Europa League.
  • Liverpool: Jones; Robinson, Coates, Carragher, Wisdom; Henderson, Sahin, Downing, Assaidi; Pacheco, Yesil. Subs: Gulacsi, Sama, Suso, Sterling, Wilson, Coady, Sinclair.
  • West Brom: Foster; Jones, Tamas, Olsson, Ridgewell; Thorne, Mulumbu; Fortune, Dorrans, Rosenberg; Lukaku. Subs: Daniels, Dawson, Berahino, Long, McAuley, Yacob, El Ghanassy.
  • Good evening and welcome to the live commentary of West Brom - Liverpool in the Capital One Cup. Baggies boss Steve Clarke will be hoping to keep his impressive start going with a win against Brendan Rodgers' side, who have struggled so far this term.
