Live Commentary

  • That's all from me for tonight, head over to for all the reaction and ratings from the game, as well as coverage of all the other games across Europe this evening.
  • Liverpool's focus now moves to Sunday's visit to Stamford Bridge for their Premier League clash with Chelsea. They'll have all their senior players back for that one, and on the evidence of tonight, they're going to need them.
  • Brendan Rodgers' team will need to beat Young Boys in their next group game to give themselves a good chance of qualifying ahead of their trip to Udinese in the final game.
  • For Liverpool, Suso was lively and a threat after coming on in the second-half, whilst Andre Wisdom and Adam Morgan also did OK. Stewart Downing once again failed to impress.
  • Lacina Traore's first-half lob over Jones following some slack defending from Coates has given the Russians the win, and based on the chances they had in the second period, they will feel that the result is fair.
  • Defeat is a little tough on Liverpool, who did well despite missing a host of senior talent, however one moment of quality has been the difference between the sides.
  • Its all over, and Anzhi have won to leapfrog their opponents in Group A.
  • 90' + 2'
    SubstitutionM. Carcela Shamil Lakhiyalov
  • 90' + 2'
A hopeful cross is lofted into the Anzhi boss, but comes to nothing.
  • 90' + 1'
Liverpool throwing everything at Anzhi in the closing stages, but a little inexperience has not helped them really.
  • 89'
Liverpool again waste a chance. They pass the ball around nicely around the Anzhi area, a ball from Pacheco spreads the play, but then the ball comes to Henderson, and his shot is high, wide and poor.
  • 88'
    Yellow Card Jonjo Shelvey
Shelvey lunges into a frustrated looking tackle. He can have no complaints about that.
  • 86'
But my word is that poor. The ball is touched to Shelvey, but his shot is woeful, and very nearly goes for a throw-in. Good chance wasted.
  • 86'
Logashov concedes a foul around 25 yards from goal. Excellent chance for Liverpool from the free kick.
  • 85'
Tagirbekov, who has been OK throughout, gets a shot off, but it is easily smothered by Jones.
  • 82'
The game is opening up a little, with Anzhi countering the subsequent corner well, leading to a 4 v 4 situation. The visitors manage to get enough bodies in the way of a shot from Jucile and the chance goes begging.
  • 81'
It's taken until the 81st minute, but Downing has finally put in a good cross. His deep hanging cross is headed clear for a corner at the far post. Good work.
  • 80'
    SubstitutionLacina Traore Fedor Smolov
  • 80'
Suso has been a revelation since coming on. The youngster has brought directness to Liverpool's play with his running with the ball, and could yet prove to be vital in the final 10 minutes...
  • 78'
Another big miss from Traore. Jucile picks up the ball in the middle of the park, and his through ball finds Traore bearing down on goal with just Jones to beat, but his shot goes wide of the far post. Poor, he really should have scored.
  • 77'
    SubstitutionJoe Cole Oussama Assaidi
  • 77'
And seconds later Liverpool nearly bag an equaliser. Suso gets a powerful shot off that Gabulov can only fumble, but he recovers well and blocks Cole's follow-up. Great chance.
  • 76'
Great chance, and Traore could have finished it there. His header is straight at Jones. Either side and Anzhi would be 2-0 ahead.
  • 75'
In the other game in this group tonight, Young Boys have taken a surprise lead over Udinese.
  • 74'
I know its the fashionable thing to say, but Stewart Downing has been poor tonight. Once again, he finds a bit of space on the left flank, but his cross is terrible, and easily cleared.
  • 73'
Pacheco shows his inexperience there, with a clumsy and unnecessary foul, which hands the initiative straight back to Anzhi, with the Reds in a good position.
  • 71'
As it is, it just doesn't look like Liverpool are going to get back into this game. Anzhi seem happy with the scoreline as it is, and if they do hold on, they'll jump above the Reds in the group.
  • 69'
Liverpool really could do with a bit more of a cutting edge up front, but you feel that without Luis Suarez and Steven Gerrard, they just lack that real goal threat tonight.
  • 68'
Suso has seen plenty of the ball since coming on for the Reds. He's driving the ball forward well from midfield, but is just unable to find a final ball on this occasion.
  • 65'
    Yellow Card Jon Flanagan
Flanagan gets a booking for a late connection. Was probably a fair call by the referee.
  • 64'
Joe Cole shows his skills of old there, as he pulls out a wonder touch after a long ball up from the back. Great skills from the former Chelsea man.
  • 61'
    SubstitutionConor Coady Suso
Connor Coady's debut is over, he's done well.
  • 61'
    SubstitutionAdam Morgan Dani Pacheco
Daniel Pacheco replaces young Adam Morgan, he's been lively up top.
  • 59'
Lacina Traore sometimes plays a bit like a low-budget Peter Crouch, but at times he shows real quality. He pulls a shot just wide of Jones' right post, after making himself some space with an excellent touch and skill.
  • 57'
That said, you could say exactly the same for how Liverpool are pressing the ball when Anzhi have it.
  • 56'
Anzhi seem quite happy to let Liverpool have the ball in their own half, with Hiddink's men only really closing the ball when they come into their half.
  • 53'
Liverpool having one of their best spells of the game so far just now. Wisdom is looking positive on the ball, and the movement of the team is good, but they are not quite able to breakdown a resolute home defence.
  • 52'
Adam Morgan does well in the Anzhi area, but his shot only finds the side netting. Nice play by the 18-year-old though.
  • 49'
Five minutes in, and the second-half is following a similar pattern to the first, with both sides comfortable on the ball, but neither really causing to many problems.
  • 48'
Lots of bluster from Anzhi in the opening stages of the half, but nothing to dangerous for the Liverpool defence to worry about.
  • 47'
It's worth remembering that stat from earlier on. Anzhi have not conceded at home in European competition this season. Bit ominous for Liverpool that.
  • 45'
Anzhi get us underway in the second-half in Moscow.
  • It'll be interesting to see how Anzhi approach this second-half. They were pretty ponderous for most of the opening period, but now they have the lead, will they press on for a second, or sit on the single goal advantage?
  • Coates was a little naive with his defending, and Traore made him pay. Praise is also needed for Boussoufa, whose ball out of the defence up to the big striker managed to bypass the opponent's midfield. Brendan Rodgers should be telling his players not to get to downhearted though - they've done well.
  • Liverpool will feel hard done by, but the hosts won't care. The finger could be pointed at Jones for rushing out to soon, but that was an instinctive decision from the goalkeeper.
  • That goal was the last action of the half, and was the only moment of pure quality in the first 45 mins.
  • 45' + 3'
The Ivorian received a pass from the back, flicked the ball first time over Coates and then cooly lobbed over the on-rusing Jones to give Anzhi a half-time lead.
  • 45' + 1'
    Assist Mbark Boussoufa
  • 45' + 1'
    Goal Lacina Traore
GOAL! Anzhi take an undeserved lead. Their performance has been poor, but a moment of pure class from Traore has given them the lead.
  • 44'
Andre Wisdom puts a wonderful cross into the area, but no forward player can get a connection, and the chance goes begging.
  • 43'
Downing pops the ball in with his left foot, but fails to make a good connection. Joe Cole tries an inventive flicked header, but it comes to nothing.
  • 42'
Joe Cole is fouled 30 yards from goal to the right of the box. Good chance if the delivery is good.
  • 41'
Five minutes till the break, Liverpool must be chuffed with their work so far.
  • 40'
Samba v Cole tussle in an shoulder barge-off. Needless to say who came out on top there...
  • 38'
Connor Coady is having a decent game on debut in Liverpool's midfield. He puts a long ball over the top (a la Enrique vs Newcastle), but Morgan can't quite reach it.
  • 36'
That chance seems to have sparked some life into the home side, and they have looked more dangerous and got more numbers forward in the last couple of minutes.
  • 34'
Anzhi very nearly open the scoring. Andre Wisdom is robbed of the ball on the right flank by Zhirkov and he crosses for Samuel Eto'o, who's fierce shot at goal is tipped over by Jones. Fine save by the Aussie keeper.
  • 33'
Anzhi are looking a little better on the ball, but are struggling to find a way through Liverpool's backline.
  • 30'
Former England, and current Russian manager Fabio Capello is in attendance tonight. He's made a good start to life in Moscow with his side top of their World Cup qualifying group.
  • 29'
    SubstitutionOdil Akhmedov M. Carcela
There didn't seem to be much wrong with him, but Anzhi make an early change.
  • 29'
Jamie Carragher concedes a foul and it's a dangerous free-kick for Anzhi. But they waste it. What a rubbish effort.
  • 28'
Shelvey is looking good for Liverpool, but he's very wasteful there. He plays a good one-two and finds space of the left, but his cross with the outside of his right boot - rather than his left - is easily intercepted by the Anzhi keeper Gabulov
  • 26'
Shelvey and Cole link-up well in midfield for the visitors, but the former Chelsea man is unable to get a shot off, nice touches though.
  • 25'
Anzhi have been disappointing so far. Considering it's their 'home' game, they have done little to show that, with their tempo poor, and creativity not obvious.
  • 24'
The best chance of the game has just fallen to Liverpool. Adam Morgan does really well, and feeds Henderson with a good pass through defence, and the flag stays down, but the ex-Sunderland man fluffs his chance when he neglects to shoot, trying to pass instead. Best chance of the game so far.
  • 22'
If Liverpool's plan for the opening 20 minutes was to keep the ball well and take the sting out of the game, then they've done very well. Almost nothing has happened.
  • 20'
Downing finds himself in a pocket of space on the left, but his cross is poor, failing to beat the first man.
  • 18'
Liverpool look very comfortable in their 3-5-2 line-up. Although with Cole and Shelvey supporting Adam Morgan up front, it looks more like a 3-6-1.
  • 16'
We're a quarter of the way into the match, and there's been little to shout about so far. The tempo of the game has been poor.
  • 15'
Yuri Zhirkhov seems to have a sore head, oh wait, there's nothing wrong with him.
  • 14'
Brad Jones is seemingly not as comfortable on the ball as much as he might need to be to fit into Brendan Rodgers' style of play. Not for the first time, he aimlessly clears a long kick upfield.
  • 12'
Anzhi having a good spell in possession at the moment, but not looking very threatening with it...
  • 11'
Guus Hiddink has something in common with Joe Cole today - its both their birthdays! The Dutchman is 66, whilst the Englishman is 31.
  • 9'
Liverpool have their first real spell in the opposition's half. Stewart Downing does well down the left, but his cross evades everyone, before John Flanagan drills a shot towards goal, which is weak and easily cleared.
  • 8'
Traore is almost in there, a decent ball is played through the middle, but the Liverpool back five do well to snuff out the danger and the ball comes through to Jones.
  • 6'
Liverpool will need to be cautious of the giant Anzhi forward Lacina Traore, he's a whopping 6ft 8in.
  • 6'
First chance of the game falls to Anzhi, but its an easy save for Brad Jones after a shot from long range.
  • 5'
Anzhi look happy to keep the ball and try to pass it around, and with experienced defender Chris Samba at the back, that should be a good base to start from.
  • 4'
Its a slow opening few minutes in Moscow, with both sides seemingly keen to get some good early touches on the ball.
  • 2'
Anzhi's fans are bouncing up and down on the terraces (presumably just to keep warm), whilst on the pitch, Liverpool have settled into their passing rhythm quickly.
  • 1'
Liverpool kick-off and get us underway at the Lokomotiv Stadium.
  • Jamie Carragher and Samuel Eto'o are preparing to lead the two teams out onto the pitch, and considering the weather, there's a surprising lack of gloves to be seen.
  • We're five minutes away from kick-off in Russia.
  • Some interesting omens here. Liverpool have never lost away in the group stages of either the UEFA Cup or Europa League, and Anzhi have never conceded a European tournament goal in Russia. What price for a 0-0 draw then?
  • 10 minutes until kick-off in Moscow. If Liverpool can win tonight, they'll put themselves in an excellent position to qualify from the group, but a defeat coupled with a win for Udinese versus Young Boys, and they might face an uphill struggle to reach the knockout stage.
  • We're 20 minutes away from kick-off, what are your score predictions? For what it's worth, I think Liverpool will struggle to get a result tonight. Anzhi have some talented attackers, and currently lie second in the Russian Premier League, whilst the Reds are languishing in the bottom half of the English top flight.
  • That's because the hosts' 15,000 capacity stadium does not come up to UEFA standards. The fans might be miffed, but the players shouldn't be, the vast majority of whom seem to live in the capital and commute down to Makhachkala for their games.
  • We're not expecting a bit crowd tonight, as this game is actually being played in the Russian capital Moscow, rather than in the Dagestan region of the country where Makhachkala are based.
  • Plenty of young faces in Brendan Rodgers team tonight, with Adam Morgan leading the line and Conor Coady making his debut. They're joined by more experienced Merseyside talent such as Jamie Carragher, Joe Cole and Stewart Downing.
  • Plenty of familiar names in the Anzhi side tonight, with Samuel Eto'o, Chris Samba and Yuri Zhirkhov all well-known to the football public. Their manager is also very famous of course, they're lead by former Russian national team boss Guus Hiddink.
  • The subs tonight for the Reds are: Gulacsi, Wilson, Robinson, Assaidi, Pacheco, Suso, Sama.
  • Brendan Rodgers has left several of his senior players at home for this match, but his side still features several internationals. They line up as follows: Jones, Wisdom, Carragher, Coates, Flanagan, Shelvey, Henderson, Coady, Downing, Cole, Morgan.
  • On the bench for Anzhi tonight are: Pomazan, Gadzhibekov, Agalarov, Lakhiyalov, Carcela-Gonzalez, Smolov, Burmistrov.
  • The teams are in, and this is how the hosts line up: Georgi Gabulov, Logashov, Samba, Joao Carlos, Tagirbekov, Ahmedov, Jucilei, Zhirkov, Eto'o, Boussoufa, Traore.
  • I'm Rhys Turrell, and I'll be taking you through this Group A clash, as the visitors look to establish a firm grip at the top of the pool, whilst their opponents seek revenge after being defeated at Anfield in the reverse fixture.
  • Good afternoon, and welcome to's coverage of Liverpool's trip to play Anzhi Makhachkala in the Europa League.
