  DID YOU KNOW?
  • These two teams met in the 2011 World Cup final, with the Japanese twice coming back to tie the Americans in a match that ended 2-2. Japan then won the title in penalty kicks.
  • The USA has gone through the tournament unbeaten, winning all three of its group matches, before taking out New Zealand in the quarterfinals and Canada in an all-time classic semifinal.
  • Japan has also not lost in the tournament. It was held to two draws in its group campaign, but has since scored victories over Brazil and France in the knockout stages.
  • The USA boasts the tournament's highest-scoring offense, with 14 goals in five games, while the Japanese have the tournament's stingiest defense, having conceded just twice in five matches.
  • No Women’s World Cup-winning side has ever managed to pick up Olympic gold the year after its world title.
  • The USA has won three of the four gold medals handed out in women's soccer (1996, 2004, 2008) and finished runner-up on the other occasion (Sydney 2000).
