The United States women are through to the Olympic semifinal after a 2-0 win over New Zealand in a quarterfinal match. Abby Wambach opened the proceedings in the first half before Sydney Leroux assured safe passage with her first Olympic goal.
Alex Morgan had a pair of chances to open the scoring early on, but was unable to convert. She was able to set up Wambach for the opener 27 minutes in however, driving a ball to the far post that the striker slid and finished from close range.
New Zealand rarely threatened the U.S. goal, but it did have a penalty shout 10 minutes from time when Betsy Hassett appeared to be brought down from behind in the box, but the Kiwi protests were waved off by the referee.
Leroux made sure the USA's advancement to the semifinals was complete with just minutes to play, when she latched onto a through ball from Tobin Heath and used her strength and pace to shrug off a defender, before finishing low and underneath New Zealand goalkeeper Jenny Bindon.
Following the win, the USA moves on to Old Trafford in Manchester on Monday, where it will face off against Canada.
