Player Ratings: France 3-1 Belarus

Goal.com was on hand to judge proceedings at Stade de France on Wednesday night, analysing the performance of each player

By Robin Bairner

  • Hugo Lloris

    Hugo Lloris

Just as on Friday night, the goalkeeper was not particularly hard worked, yet he was forced to produce some moments of genuine excellence, making a fine save from Dragun early in the second half.

  • Christophe Jallet

    Christophe Jallet

Preferred to Reveillere in the right-back slot and fully managed to justify his selection. He was able to get on the scoresheet with a thumping effort in off the bar when he was clearly shaping to cross, but the fortuitous nature of his goal should not take away from an encouraging showing.

  • Mamadou Sakho

    Mamadou Sakho

Again deployed in the heart of the rearguard, he was only occasionally asked to perform serious defensive duties. There was the odd uncertain swipe, but he was largely dominant, offering a threat in the other box with his aerial prowess.

  • Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa

    Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa

Another mature performance from the Montpellier defender, who was never flustered in or out of possession. Did concede the penalty, but that seemed to owe to him losing his footing more than anything else.

  • Patrice Evra

    3
    3.00

    Patrice Evra

Initially showed a more attacking face than Jallet, but was happy to play a more defensive role after the break as his colleague bombed forward.

  • Etienne Capoue
    5
    1
    3.50

    Etienne Capoue

Displayed signs of inexperience, almost relaxing too much in the centre of the field, meaning he was guilty of giving the ball away in a flamboyant manner on more than one occasion. Got forward into the box to score the opening goal of the game with a calm finish.

  • Franck Ribéry

    4.00

    Franck Ribéry

Lively from the off, the winger posed real headaches with his dribbling around the box, though the referee did him few favours. Has a tendency to play poorly for Les Bleus, but silenced some doubters with a terrific performance that was capped by a cheeky chipped finish late on.

  • Rio Antonio Mavuba
    7

    3.50

    Rio Antonio Mavuba

A typically collected performance in the midfield, where the Lille fulcrum offered a dynamic but also solid presence. Lost control of things a little in the second half, but not to a concerning level.

  • Yohan Cabaye
    10

    3.50

    Yohan Cabaye

Given a licence top lay in a roaming midfield role, the Newcastle man was at the heart of much of France’s best moments in the first half. His set pieces were particularly threatening. Withdrawn after the break

  • Karim Benzema
    12
    2
    3.50

    Karim Benzema

Did not touch his best level for the national team once again, though he was certainly not a liability. Displayed some nice touches, the best of which fashioned a terrific third goal for Ribery. It was nice for the Real Madrid man to finish the game on a real high.

  • Olivier Giroud
    10
    3
    3.00

    Olivier Giroud

Still showing signs of rust, but was nevertheless threatening, firing a terrific early warning shot that needed a fine save. Withdrawn after an industrious hour.

Substitutions

  • Mathieu Valbuena

    Mathieu Valbuena

Played 30 minutes after replacing Benzema and was busy after arriving.

  • Sergei Veremko

    Sergei Veremko

Although the goalkeeper did well to save from Giroud in the first half, he will be disappointed to have conceded to Capoue’s fairly tame shot. Perhaps will feel he should not have been beaten by the second goal either, but he was helpless about the third.

  • Aleksandr Martynovich
    1

    3.00

    Aleksandr Martynovich

An absolute rock against the French in the previous qualifying campaign, he was similarly uncompromising and willing to hammer into challenges. Some of his marking was abysmal, though, with Sakho given two clear headers from corner kicks.

  • Artem Radkov
    1
    0
    2.50

    Artem Radkov

Was unable to exert any great influence on the game. Simply solid in the first half when his side had a negative outlook, he was out of his depth in the second when he was left more exposed.

  • Denis Polyakov
    1
    0
    3.00

    Denis Polyakov

A very physical performance from the defender, though when tested in one-on-one situations he rarely looked particularly comfortable. When Jallet got forward, he looked out of his depth.

  • Dmitri Verkhovtsov
    1
    0
    2.00

    Dmitri Verkhovtsov

A very uncertain performance. Some wayward control nearly allowed Giroud in early on, but the defender recovered well. A first-half caution made his life difficult, but it was certainly merited. Took a heavy blow to his head after the break and ultimately had to go off.

  • Maksim Bordachov
    1
    0
    2.50

    Maksim Bordachov

Was the more enterprising of the two full-backs in an attacking sense, but it was his mix up that led to the opening goal of the game. Found himself too tight on Ribery at times.

  • Anton Putsila
    1
    0
    3.50

    Anton Putsila

Drew the penalty that brought Belarus back into the match, although he had to be sharp to tuck home the rebound.

  • Renan Bressan
    1
    0
    3.00

    Renan Bressan

Replaced at half time having failed to make any meaningful impact on the first half. Carried the ball purposefully on one occasion, but that was the best he could muster.

  • Stanislav Dragun
    1
    0
    3.50

    Stanislav Dragun

Offered the occasional dangerous thrust from the middle of the field, but much of his role was simply being disciplined by holding his position. Early in the second half he was thwarted by Lloris and then headed a good chance wide.

  • Sergei Kislyak
    1
    0
    2.50

    Sergei Kislyak

Grabbed the winner in this fixture during Euro 2012 qualifying little over two years ago, but offered only flashes in this clash.

  • Vitali Rodionov
    1
    0
    2.50

    Vitali Rodionov

Incredibly isolated at the head of the Belarus attack. Even when his team-mates did manage to get into French territory, they failed to pick out the striker, whose movement and hold up play was not enough. Taken off with half an hour to play.

Substitutions

  • Alexander Kulchiy

    Alexander Kulchiy

The vastly experienced midfielder added some composure to the Belarus side, who enjoyed reasonable periods of possession when he was introduced.

  • Sergei Balanovich

    Sergei Balanovich

Came on in the second half for the injured Verkhovtsov.

  • Sergey Kornilenko

    2.50

    Sergey Kornilenko

Played the last 30 minutes and missed a penalty kick, although the rebound was converted.
