Aguila 0-3 Toronto: Dunfield scores twice as Reds dominate in El Salvador

Toronto FC kept its season alive with a win over Aguila in CCL play on Tuesday night, giving TFC a long shot at advancing to the knockout stages for the second consecutive year.

It wasn't the prettiest of matches, and the scoreline could have been much bigger, but Toronto FC did what it had to do in securing a 3-0 victory at C.D. Aguila on Tuesday night.

Goals by Quincy Amarikwa and Terry Dunfield, who struck twice, powered a dominant TFC to the crucial victory, which allowed Toronto to get within striking distance of first place Santos Laguna in Group 1 of the CONCACAF Champions League.

In the first quarter hour, it was all TFC as the Reds looked for an early strike to set the pace against their already-eliminated hosts. Some sloppy play eventually led to a number of offensive forays for Toronto, and just after the 15 minute mark Ryan Johnson streaked down the right side and found Amarikwa with a searching cross to the back post. The 24-year-old made no mistake in heading high into the underside of the Aguila net for the 1-0 lead.

The game from then on out was Toronto's to lose, as the Reds completely dominated play for the duration of the first half. If not for some suspect finishing, TFC would have been up by three or four by the half hour mark, but ineffectiveness in the final third kept Aguila in the match for far longer than play would have suggested.

That all came to an end in the 40th minute, as Toronto found itself on a three-on-one after a Aguila giveaway. Johnson's first touch was heavy, but the Jamaican international did enough to square the ball across to a wide open Dunfield, who easily tapped the ball in from inside the six and doubled the visitors' lead.

In the second half, the hosts gave a better account for themselves, with increased organization and more intent to go forward. It didn't amount to much, and after a prolonged spell where neither side looked threatening, TFC regained its advantage over the match.

Once again, poor finishing prevented the floodgates from opening, and it was only in the dying moments of the game when Dunfield would complete his brace and give Toronto its only second-half goal.

The 3-0 result means TFC has all to play for when it travels to Mexico to face group leader Santos Laguna next month, although Toronto will have to win big to advance to the knockout stage.
