Goal.com rates the players on show as a late Ander Herrera equalizer forces the Catalans to wait for the title after Lionel Messi's introduction had turned the game on its head

The keeper commanded his area well, dealing capably with most of what came into his box. The Blaugrana managed to get a couple of efforts passed him but saves from Pedro and Alexis created a solid base to equalise from.

  • Aurtenetxe

    10
    3.00

    Aurtenetxe

A solid outing for the 21-year-old left back as he kept a close watch on Pedro in the wide areas. He was rarely beaten for pace and kept tight to his centre-backs to restrict the space for Barca to exploit.

  • Mikel San José Domínguez

    Mikel San José Domínguez

Read the game well in the centre of defence and helped keep Barcelona at bay for large periods. He could have got a goal early in the second half but he put in a weak challenge as Messi danced through to equalise.

  • Andoni Iraola

    3.00

    Andoni Iraola

A competent performance from the right-back as he ensured Barca did not threaten down their left for much of the game. However, he could probably have showed more desire to get forward and support the attackers.

  • Borja Ekiza

    3.00

    Borja Ekiza

The centre-back positioned himself well to minimise space for Vilanova's men to run into throughout. He regularly timed his challenges well but could do little to stop Messi from turning the game around.

  • Susaeta
    15
    9
    4.00

    Susaeta

Did not stop running up and down the right flank, continually looking to capitalise on any space in behind Jordi Alba. He did well to chase the ball in and score the opening goal at the back post.

  • Carlos Gurpegui

    9
    3.00

    Carlos Gurpegui

Policed the midfield to decent effect for large parts but could not keep up when Barcelona knocked the ball about quickly. He provided a solid base in midfield for the hosts.

  • Ander Herrera

    Ander Herrera

Put a number of quality passes into the final third, particularly his cross which Aduriz narrowly missed after just six minutes. He picked up the ball in midfield and moved it forward to the strikers well before grabbing a late equaliser.

  • Óscar De Marcos

    Óscar De Marcos

Pressed extremely well when Athletic moved forward and put the Barca defence under pressure quickly. He made some decent runs up the pitch but was perhaps out-passed in the middle of the park.

  • Muniain
    16
    6
    3.50

    Muniain

Full of energy on the left wing and showed his hunger for the ball by dispossessing Pique and creating a chance in the sixth minute. He even chipped in defensively, chasing back to assist his team-mates.

  • Aritz Aduriz Zubeldia
    7

    Aritz Aduriz Zubeldia

The former Valencia striker was extremely lively and narrowly missed two opportunities to score in the first half. Nevertheless, a brilliant run saw him beat Pique and set up Susaeta for the goal.

Substitutions

  • Ramalho

    Ramalho

Replaced San Jose in the 70th minute but did not have time to make a sufficient mark on the game.

  • Fernando Llorente

    Fernando Llorente

Brought on for Aduriz in the 74th minute but did not get a chance to test Valdes.

  • Ibai Gómez

    Ibai Gómez

Came on for Aurtenetxe with 16 minutes remaining and helped push his side forward.

  • Víctor Valdés

    Víctor Valdés

The keeper did not have many saves to make as Athletic did not get a lot of shots away. He coped well with most of the balls into the box and was very vocal to organise his defence.

  • Daniel Alves
    52
    15
    3.50

    Daniel Alves

The Brazilian right-back was as full of running as ever, regularly charging down the wing to stretch the hosts' defence. Although he left space in behind him, his cross was key to the second goal.

  • Piqué

    Piqué Flop of the Match

Nearly gifted the hosts an early goal by being too lax in possession at the back. He was then beaten far too easily by Aduriz in the build up to the opening goal in what was not his greatest defensive outing.

  • Jordi Alba
    45
    20
    3.00

    Jordi Alba

An energetic performance from the left-back as he used his pace to get forward and added some width on the left flank. He was not used frequently enough to impact the game there, but defensively he was solid throughout.

  • Éric Abidal
    73
    7
    3.00

    Éric Abidal

The Frenchman only played 45 minutes, which suggests he could well feature against Bayern in midweek. He was strong in the tackle and distributed the ball cleanly from the back.

  • Cesc Fàbregas
    46
    29
    2.50

    Cesc Fàbregas

Dropped incredibly deep while operating as a false nine for the first hour, and his lack of movement in behind left Barca short up top. A brilliant reverse pass which nearly earned an assist was his only positive moment.

  • Xavi
    54
    20
    2.50

    Xavi

Moved the ball about very quickly to try and create space for his team-mates despite the intense pressing of their opponents. However, the majority of these were simple, horizontal passes and did not propel his side forward.

  • Thiago Alcántara
    61
    13
    3.50

    Thiago Alcántara

The young midfielder did well to maintain a high tempo to his side's game by shifting possession about quickly whenever he was in possession. He was accurate and precise with the ball at his feet.

  • Alex Song
    72
    14
    4.00

    Alex Song

Played a very simple game in the holding role, making a series of simple, short passes. He disrupted the hosts' link between midfield and attack all evening and helped provide protection to the defence.

  • Alexis Sánchez
    65
    16
    3.50

    Alexis Sánchez

The Chilean rattled the post with a great effort in the 16th minute, but was only dangerous in bursts. He was always on the move, looking to find space among the Athletic defence and did so to drive home the equaliser.

  • Pedro
    38
    31
    2.00

    Pedro

Had a very quiet night on the right flank. He was barely seen with the ball at his feet and therefore never got at Aurtenetxe. At times he drifted in field in search of the ball but offered no penetration to his team.

Substitutions

  • Adriano
    42
    21
    3.00

    Adriano

Replaced Abidal at half-time and kept Barca relatively tight defensively. However, his poorly-headed clearance was drilled into the bottom corner by Herrera.

  • Andrés Iniesta Luján
    58
    16

    Andrés Iniesta Luján

Brought on for Sanchez in the 78th minute but could not influence proceedings.

  • Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi Top of the Match

The Argentine completely turned the game around following his 59th-minute introduction. Scored one of his best goals of the season before supplying a headed assist for his team's second.
