    Raphaël Varane

The French youngster will continue to draw praise following another strong showing for Madrid. He rarely let anything past him, with a fantastic challenge on Piti at the top of the box on the stroke of halftime his highlight.

    Pepe

A solid night at the back for the Portuguese, who was posed very little threat by Leo Baptistao. He dealt with all that was thrown at him, but made a few needlessly aggressive challenges.

  • Sergio Ramos

Sergio Ramos Flop of the Match

Got in front of his defender to nod home in the 12th minute but was dismissed just six minutes later. A harsh yellow card was quickly followed by another for handball saw him sent from the field, leaving his team short for most of the game.

  • Fabio Coentrao

    2.50

    Fabio Coentrao

Looked to be a weak link at the back for Madrid as he did not get tight enough to Lass or Tito. He was very reserved and refused to push forward and stretch Rayo at any point on the evening.

  • Sami Khedira

    Sami Khedira

Tracked back well and policed the midfield but was always keen to push forward and turn defense into a swift counterattack. He helped keep Madrid solid at the back after being reduced to 10 men.

    Mesut Özil

Another good performance from the Germany international. He used his fantastic passing to get two assists for his team, putting them in total control early on. He was always looking to unlock the defense.

  • Michael Essien

    Michael Essien

Used his physique to good effect in the midfield but did not push forward to join the attack frequently enough. He got one shot away but that was turned behind by a strong save from Ruben.

  • Cristiano Ronaldo

    Cristiano Ronaldo

The Portuguese had a very quiet night as he struggled to get involved in the game. He lacked conviction on the counterattack and failed to get on the score sheet, coming closest when he hit the side netting after rounding Ruben.

    Kaká Top of the Match

Went on some scything dribbles through the heart of the pitch and linked well with Ozil in the build up to the first goal. He continued to run at opposition and get into dangerous areas, making him his team's most dangerous player.

  • Morata

    Raúl Albiol

Came on for Morata in the 27th minute and did a very effective job of helping his side shut up shop defensively. Despite having one man less the never looked like conceding and Albiol played his part in that.

  • Ángel Di María

    Ángel Di María

Replaced Ozil in the 67th minute but was unable to weave his magic on the game as his team lacked possession.

Brought on for Kaka with 10 minutes remaining and did not have time to influence proceedings.

    Rubén

Could do very little to keep out either of the two goals as he was let down by his defense. Still, he made a cracking save from Essien in the first half and always looked confident.

  • Tito
    2
    6
    3.00

    Tito

Offered his side a lot of width down the right and ensured that Coentrao could not enjoy a comfortable night. He made a few good runs and did not forget his defensive duties, never being caught out.

  • Casado

    2.50

    Casado

Gave away the free kick that led to the second goal with a late tackle. However, he regularly pushed on but it left his team short when they were countered against. Replaced midway through the second half.

  • Alejandro Gálvez

    Alejandro Gálvez

After a poor start to the game which saw the hosts storm into a two-goal lead, Galvez's night turned out more comfortable than he expected. He did not come under much pressure from the 10 men of Madrid.

  • Jordi Figueras
    2
    5
    3.00

    Jordi Figueras

Knocked the ball about well from the back, but struggled to cope with Madrid on the counterattack. Their positioning was not always right, but they played to offside trap well.

  • Piti
    2
    7
    2.50

    Piti

Was unable to thread the much-needed pass between the Madrid defense, meaning his biggest involvement in the game was an appalling dive in the first half. Did not do enough with Rayo's possession.

  • Trashorras

    Trashorras

Encouraged his team to keep the ball by making himself open to receive it and playing simple passes. He looked to dictate the tempo of the game but failed make such a difference in front of goal as he blazed over before the break.

  • Javi Fuego

    3
    3.00

    Javi Fuego

Was guilty of poor marking as he allowed Ramos to evade him and head in Madrid's second goal. However, he passed the ball about well from deep areas and helped Rayo keep on top of the ball.

  • Alejandro Domínguez
    6
    3
    3.50

    Alejandro Domínguez

Made some positive runs beyond the striker and was one of few Rayo players to try and work the keeper. He was unable to find the net though, sending one effort narrowly wide and another straight into the keeper's arms.

  • Lass
    13
    6
    3.50

    Lass

Looked dangerous in the wide areas, and showed an uncanny ability to find the yard of space to get a cross in. He regularly tried to run in behind and gave the Madrid defenders something to think about.

  • Léo Baptistão
    4
    5
    2.50

    Léo Baptistão

Spent most of his time on the pitch acting rather than playing football. He looked disinterested in the game as service was hard to come by throughout the game. He looked poor up against Pepe and Varane.
