Player Ratings: Real Madrid 4-3 Real Sociedad

Goal.com was on hand to cast a critical eye over events at Santiago Bernabeu as Ronaldo's double in the second half was just enough for the hosts to clinch victory.

    Adàn

Mourinho’s ‘technical decision’ placed him between the posts ahead of Casillas again, but he failed in spectacular fashion to make his case for the No. 1 jersey on a permanent basis. Six minutes in, his poor clearance forced him to bring down Vela inside the area, leading to a penalty and an early bath for the stand-in.

  • Raphaël Varane

    Raphaël Varane

Gave a good account of himself in defence as despite one or two hairy moments, he was generally able to repel what Sociedad could throw his way and restore a sense of calm to the backline.

  • Ricardo Carvalho

    Ricardo Carvalho

Played a part in a Madrid goal with a shot that was diverted in, but he looked initially rusty at the back when forced to chase the game. He grew in stature remarkably as the game wore on, though, and embarked on an unlikely marauding run down the left in the second half.

  • Arbeloa
    35
    76
    2.50

    Arbeloa

Did his job with little fuss for the most part, but played Prieto onside for Sociedad's third goal after a shocking lapse in concentration.

  • Sami Khedira
    117

    3.50

    Sami Khedira

Laid on the opener for Benzema with a fantastic through-ball, and scored the second himself with an opportunistic flick from close range. Settled into a more defensive role in the second half as the usual suspects were able to get on the ball more.

  • Mesut Özil
    110
    39
    3.00

    Mesut Özil

Really struggled to make his mark on proceedings, and was often a non-factor in the offensive third for large periods in the first half. Madrid's change in set-up after the break allowed him a lot more offensive freedom and he was then able to play with his usual panache.

  • Xabi Alonso

    23
    3.00

    Xabi Alonso

Put in a dependable enough shift in the middle of the park after his team were reduced to 10 men and could not be faulted for effort when covering the extra ground. Solid, if a little unambitious with his passing.

  • Michael Essien
    117
    22
    3.00

    Michael Essien

Made one good defensive play in the first half with a calm back-header under real pressure and was solid overall at the back. Rarely looked to get forward, however.

  • Cristiano Ronaldo
    272
    43
    4.00

    Cristiano Ronaldo

Huffed and puffed with no avail for most of the match, but came alive midway through the second half. Buried a confident finish on a sweeping break to put Madrid in front for good, before scoring with a scorching free kick to make it 4-2. No matter his in-game form, his quality can always turn a match on its head.

  • Karim Benzema
    140
    15
    3.50

    Karim Benzema

Broke the deadlock with a typically lethal finish two minutes in and could have had another with the last kick of the first half after his superb effort from the edge of the box hit the post. The best player in attack for the hosts, he also set up Ronaldo's first goal with a sublime clipped pass.

  • José Callejón
    71

    José Callejón

The unfortunate casualty for Adan’s failings, as he was brought off for Casillas after only six minutes.

    Iker Casillas

Called to his team's rescue early on after Adan's sending off, and could not be faulted for any of the goals he conceded. Decent job in goal.

  • Luka Modric

    32

    Luka Modric

Added poise in midfield after his introduction.

  • Gonzalo Higuaín

    Gonzalo Higuaín

Hit the crossbar with a late shot that could have added a fifth for his side.

  • Claudio Bravo
    11
    16
    3.00

    Claudio Bravo

Made a decent stop on a Ronaldo free kick, but was fooled to easily by another, which the Portuguese converted.

  • Mikel González Martínez
    11

    3.50

    Mikel González Martínez

Refused to be fazed by the reputation of his opponents, and halted many a Madrid attack dead in its tracks. A determined defensive display.

  • Íñigo Martínez
    11
    9
    3.00

    Íñigo Martínez

Extremely consistent in the first half, but a little shaky after the break when the pressure began to mount on his goal. Allowed the attackers a bit too much space but difficult to fault his endeavour.

  • Dani Estrada
    8
    17
    2.00

    Dani Estrada

Did a solid job in keeping tabs on Cristiano Ronaldo and, at times, he was able to offer his side some joy when advancing up the right flank. But he threw away much of his good work with a silly red card late on for a block on Ronaldo that ended his team's chances of getting a result.

  • Alberto De la Bella
    12
    8
    3.50

    Alberto De la Bella

A really accomplished job defending on his flank and forcing Madrid to find their avenue forward down the other wing. Supported the attack to good effect as well.

  • Xabi Prieto
    92
    10
    4.00

    Xabi Prieto

An unexpected and opportunistic hat-trick for the Sociedad captain, who could not have done any more for his side. Scored his first from a penalty, his second from a quick reaction, and his third from an instinctive finish. A constant thorn in Real Madrid's side.

  • Rubén Pardo
    11
    7
    3.50

    Rubén Pardo

A great job in midfield keeping the ball in constant motion and played a key role in many of Sociedad's attacks. Always quick to spot his team-mates in good positions.

  • Zurutuza
    4
    14
    3.00

    Zurutuza

Made himself a menace on occasion in the middle of the park with his tenacity off the ball. The quality was not always there, but the effort certainly was.

  • Antoine Griezmann
    14
    9
    3.00

    Antoine Griezmann

Did what was required of him in attack without ever really setting the match alight. Linked well with his team-mates, but rarely looked to take any initiative himself.

  • Carlos Vela
    39
    9
    3.50

    Carlos Vela

Showed an uncanny ability to work himself into threatening positions and it was his industry that played a part in Sociedad’s first half goals. He won the penalty off Adan for the opener and it was his deflected shot that put the second in play for Prieto.

  • Diego Ifrán
    6
    11
    3.00

    Diego Ifrán

Never really made much of an impact on the game, as Vela and Prieto dominated the ball when Sociedad attacked. Taken off in the second half.

Did not really make much of a mark on the game.

    Chory Castro

Set up Prieto's third goal with a perfectly-weighted through ball.
