After receiving only an obligatory late substitute appearance in his hometown of Chicago, Brad Guzan started for Aston Villa in the third and final match of its U.S. tour. He made it count, pulling off the deciding save in a penalty shootout following a 2-2 draw with the Portland Timbers.
Sebastian Rincon made his first appearance for the Timbers, marking the occasion with an equalizer to Ciaran Clark's opener. Matthew Lowton again put Villa ahead, again from a corner. (Aston Villa failed to score from a corner throughout the entirety of last season.) This time Rodney Wallace put Portland even with a deflected shot.
"They play good football," Timbers coach Gavin Wilkinson said. "And we coped with it. We kept our shape, we broke them down. As the game wore on, maybe it was a level of fitness for them, but we started to impose ourselves more and more."
In the shootout Guzan blocked Bright Dike's attempt to give the English club a 5-4 penalty win.
