Goal.com was on hand to cast a critical eye over events at the Iberostar Stadium as Los Blancos romped back into form with an emphatic victory

    Dudú Aouate

Just too much pressure in attack from Madrid, and too much disorganization in the defence in front of him for Aouate to have stood any chance.

  • Anderson Conceição

    Anderson Conceição

Made a complete hash in his attempted interception of Di Maria’s pass, allowing Higuain the time and space he needed to send Madrid into the lead. Deplorable performance overall, as he was bypassed time and time again by the visitors on the break.

  • Pedro Geromel

    Pedro Geromel

Read the game well initially with a few timely interceptions, but as Madrid grew in confidence, he could not stem the tide any longer. Caught out by many of their attacks in the second half.

  • Bigas

    11
    1.50

    Bigas

Was simply too slow to stop Ronaldo for Madrid’s second, as the Portuguese winger beat him on the turn. His flank was the one most often breached by the visitors, as he found himself isolated too often against the opposing forwards.

  • Andreu Fontàs Prat

Andreu Fontàs Prat Flop of the Match

Left chasing shadows all over the park as the vision and movement of Ozil and Modric was too much to handle. Sloppy in possession, and one giveaway set the events of one of Madrid’s goals in motion.

  • Ximo

    Ximo

Though he was not as poor as Bigas on the opposite flank, the sheer quality of Jose Mourinho’s men meant that he was still bested consistently.

  • Josep Lluis Martí

    Josep Lluis Martí

Like the rest of his team, he could do little to stop Madrid one in full flow. Offered virtually nothing in midfield as he was often left racing back in vain towards his goal.

  • Nsue
    6
    12
    2.00

    Nsue

The most threatening player for Mallorca in attack, as he was able to get the better of Sergio Ramos once or twice. One tricky clip towards the back post in the first half forced Casillas into a top save but unfortunately, he could not always sustain that level of quality.

  • Giovani dos Santos
    20
    23

    Giovani dos Santos

Though he provided Mallorca with a direct option, he was overambitious with the ball, and ended up losing it multiple times. Squared up to Ramos and Essien a few times, but was generally unable to get anything out of the pair.

  • Tomer Hemed
    9

    2.00

    Tomer Hemed

One or two nice but harmless moments in attack was about the best he could muster, as he was never even close to making a breakthrough.

  • Víctor

    11

    Víctor

Isolated up front as Mallorca's time spent defending meant that he was starved of the ball. Much like Hemed, he had little chance to stand out.

Lost the ball twice after his introduction.

  • Iker Casillas

    Iker Casillas

One clutch save on Nsue with the score still at 1-0 rescued his team. He was not tested much otherwise, but made no mistake with the routine tasks required of him.

  • Raphaël Varane
    115
    12
    3.50

    Raphaël Varane

With Pepe often stepping out to challenge the Mallorca attackers, Varane sat back in a covering role, which he executed to good effect. Mopped up effectively in his own box and showed great poise when bringing the ball out of defence.

  • Pepe
    104
    20
    3.50

    Pepe

Channelled his aggression in all the right ways tonight, as his physicality when confronting the Mallorca attackers made him a virtually impenetrable figure. Dominant in the air as well as he was the first man to many of the home side’s deliveries into the box.

  • Sergio Ramos
    105
    11
    3.50

    Sergio Ramos

Shifted out to his old position of right-back in a reshuffled Madrid defence, Ramos did not disappoint, standing up well to Dos Santos and providing an excellent option on the overlap.

  • Mesut Özil
    173
    21
    4.00

    Mesut Özil

A few good moments when probing at the top of the box, but Ozil was truly at his best whenever Madrid pushed forward on the counterattack. His vision was always a step ahead of Mallorca, as he set attack after attack in motion with his inch-perfect passing. Set up Callejon's goal at the death.

  • Xabi Alonso
    101
    17
    3.50

    Xabi Alonso

A professional display in the centre of the park. With Ozil and Modric pulling the strings, Alonso was happy to leave them at work and busy himself with the more industrial jobs in midfield. Broke up a few attacks well and was the first outlet for the defence.

  • Michael Essien
    132
    20
    3.50

    Michael Essien

He was caught too far up field on a few occasions, allowing Mallorca an avenue forward on his left flank. But when faced with danger, he was strong and did not take any chances, often opting to clear the ball out of play rather than risk playing his way out of trouble. A thumping challenge in the second half halted a potentially dangerous Mallorca break.

  • Luka Modric
    284
    26
    3.50

    Luka Modric

Dovetailed superbly alongside Ozil, as the pair’s understanding in attack left Mallorca perpetually on the back foot. Intelligent on the ball and with his distribution, and played a key role in many of Madrid’s attacks.

  • Ángel Di María
    112
    28
    4.00

    Ángel Di María

Put in a lot of effort in the flanks, as he broke forward at every opportunity. Linked fantastically well with the rest of his attacking team-mates, and played a decisive role in two of Madrid's goals.

  • Cristiano Ronaldo
    245
    39
    4.50

    Cristiano Ronaldo

As good as Ozil and Modric’s partnership was in midfield, Ronaldo and Higuain performed even better together up front. A quick turn and shot saw him score the visitors’ second, and the Portuguese was truly on song in the second half. Set up Higuain’s second with a well-weighted through ball, before rounding off his own brace with a feed from the Argentine.

  • Gonzalo Higuaín
    231
    22
    5.00

Gonzalo Higuaín Top of the Match

Needed only eight minutes to break the deadlock, showing great instincts and a fantastic finish to capitalise on a loose ball, and made no mistake with his second, a cool strike from 12 yards out. Two world class finishes would be enough for any striker, but the highlight of his contribution was a pair of sublime, one-touch passes in either half to set up both of Ronaldo’s goals. A complete forward’s performance.

Substitutions

  • José Callejón

    José Callejón

Scored with a simple tap-in with the last kick of the game to round off the scoring.
