K. Benzema 13'
Cristiano Ronaldo 70'
FULL TIME IN MADRID. Real Madrid earn their first away win of the season with a 2-0 victory over Rayo thanks to goals from Benzema and Ronaldo, and they done it all under the fantastic glow of working floodlights! Thank you for joining us on Goal.com! I've been Martin Macdonald, see you next time!
90' + 2'
90' + 1'
Jose Casado is sent off! He is shown a second yellow card for a stupidly late challenge on Ozil. Very, very silly.
The game just winding down now. The Rayo fans are still singing though, as they have been all night. Fair play.
Yet another tight offside for Real Madrid as Ronaldo slides through for Ozil. That looked very close there but perhaps the German could have held his run more.
Nice interplay on the edge of the box from Higuain and Ozil and the Argentine goes for the one-two but his team-mate's pass takes him by surprise as it goes through the legs of Amat. Rayo clear.
You have to hand it to Rayo. They have been behind for the majority of the game and are relentlessly piling men forward. There is a real fighting spirit in the camp of the home side.
Higuain shows superb strength to drive down the right and side. He attempts to pick out Ronaldo in the centre but the Portuguese makes his run a tad too early and is flagged as offside.
Jose Mourinho just tightening things up in midfield now by introducing Sami Khedira in place of Angel Di Maria. He'll patrol the centre of the midfield.
Ángel Di María
Pepe just recovering after receiving a blow to the face from Lass's boot. I'm not even going to mention the Portuguese tasting his own medicine. Not at all.
The Rayo goal has been like the Alamo after conceding the second goal. They are piling so much men forward that Real Madrid are counterattacking at will. They should be 3,4 up by now.
As I'm sure you've realised by now. Amidst all the madness after the goal, Gonzalo Higuain has been introduced to the action in place of Benzema.
What a miss from Ronaldo! Higuain picks out Ronaldo at the back post and with the goal at his mercy he fluffs the ball against the post! Incredible!
Penalty Goal Cristiano Ronaldo
GOOOOOAAAAAL FOR REAL MADRID!!! Ronaldo confidently dispatches the penalty to the right corner past Ruben. 2-0 and Mourinho's men looking much more comfortable now.
Yellow Card Jordi Amat
Suspicions of handball there! Yep, penalty kick to Real Madrid! Ronaldo reverses a pass into the centre but the ball comes off the hand of Amat!
Madrid make their first change of the match as Luka Modric is replaced by Mesut Ozil.
The game is becoming quite dogged now. Not a lot of passing is going on in the middle of the park but its certainly a battle with plenty of challenges flying in.
HUUUYYYYY!!! Jose Carlos nearly scores with a fantastic strike! He cuts inside on his left and unleashes a thunderbolt towards the top corner but it rises just at the last minute and goes inches over the bar. Very unlucky.
Yellow Card Xabi Alonso
Yellow Card Casado
Well I think Xabi Alonso is playing the wrong sport here as he brings down a Rayo attacker with what is basically a rugby challenge. No surprises as he receives a yellow card.
GOOOOAAAAAL FOR REAL MADRID!! WAIT, NO!! Benzema runs through on goal and coolly finishes but the referee brings the play back for a free kick to Madrid! What is the official doing there? Terrible decision.
Ronaldo getting a little frustrated now as he attempts to take on too much. Firstly he attempts to pick out Benzema inside the box but sees his pass blocked. The ball comes back to him around 30 yards out and he attempts a spectacular shot at goal but again sees it blocked. On both occasions Modric and Di Maria would have been better options inside.
Marcelo send Ronaldo down the left and the Portuguese cuts inside before lashing a strike over the bar with a right-footed strike. There were better options for Ronaldo inside the box but he opted to shoot.
Nearly a calamity at the back for Madrid! Arbeloa attempts to pass the ball back to Casillas but puts the ball directly to the feet of Delibasic, but the Rayo man was caught on his heels it goes through to Casillas! If he was paying attention it would have been a tap-in.
Well, Lass slightly ambitious with a cross/shot from the left-hand side. The Rayo man found himself in a great position but suffered from a rush of blood to the head and blasted the ball over the bar.
Brilliant defending from Arbeloa at the back post as he stretches to head away a deflected cross into the box. Important clearance as Lass was lurking at the back post.
RAYO GET THE SECOND HALF UNDERWAY.
Half time in Madrid. Benzema's simple tap-in is the difference at the moment between Rayo and Jose Mourinho's men. The hosts acquitting themselves however. Join us in 15 minutes for the second period, when hopefully the floodlights will still be operational!
Ruben just looking a little dodgy with his kicking at the moment. A couple of times he has received back passes and with Madrid players closing down has sliced the ball out of the park.
Yellow Card Alejandro Domínguez
First booking of the match for Rayo goes to Dominguez for a late challenge on Essien on the edge of the Madrid box. The former Chelsea man doesn't make a meal of it and we can continue.
Lass has received the ball a couple of times in the last few minutes but he must aim to do better with the possession. Firstly he blasted a shot well over the bar and then was robbed of the ball by Alonso in midfield.
Michael Essien finds himself in an excellent position on the edge of the box and attempts to pick out the marauding run of Arbeloa down the right with a neat pass inbetween the lines but he just puts a little too much on it and Rayo manage to scramble clear.
Another save from Casillas! Jordi Amat rises high inside the box to power a Dominguez free kick towards goal but the Madrid stalwart is there once again to make the block.
Rayo have Real Madrid shaken slightly now. The game is incredible open which is providing excellent entertainment. It really is end-to-end stuff.
Rayo with a double chance!! Firstly Delibasic fires a powerful header at goal but Casillas makes an instinctive save and then the ball is drilled back towards goal from Labaka but Xabi Alonso is there to clear from the line! Incredible!
Rayo still proving themselves to be a threat in the game, and they should be with the attacking talent of Lass, Leo and Delibasic in attack. Certainly a more than capable trio.
The game is getting pretty stretched now which can only mean bad things for Rayo. Ronaldo almost beat Ruben to the ball but the goalkeeper done well to run from goal and clear into the stand.
Rayo counterattack at pace through Lass and then eventually Delibasic but they attack is negated when Marcelo eases the Rayo man out of the way cleverly and Madrid manage to clean up at the back.
Another great save from Ruben! Modric finds himself with space through on goal on the right-hand side but the Rayo goalkeeper dashes from goal to make the save at the feet of the Croatian!
Ronaldo follows suit and attempts to cut in and fire a strike at goal. This time, though, it comes from the left and he attempts to smash the ball towards the near post but Ruben gets down well to palm the ball away.
Di Maria goes close!! What a strike! The Argentine typically cuts in from the right and attempts to curl the ball into the far corner but it goes a whisker by the post!
Yellow Card Arbeloa
Second Madrid booking of the match and this time it goes to Arbeloa. Ohhh that could easily have been a red. The Spaniard goes in with the studs pretty high on Delibasic. His only saving grace could be that the Rayo man also slid in strong.
Excellent play from Madrid! Xabi Alonso clips a gorgeous pass over the top of the Rayo defence and Benzema picks up and turns sharply but a last ditch challenge from Amat stops the shot on goal!
Well that's one way to curb the ascendancy of your opponents. Rayo have looked sharp for the opening of the match, and certainly looked dangerous, but Madrid have took the sting out of the game with that goal.
Assist Ángel Di María
Goal Karim Benzema
GOOOOOAAAAAAL FOR REAL MADRID! And as simple a goal as you will ever see! Ronaldo sends Di Maria down the channel and the Argentine squares the ball to the back post for Benzema, who has the easiest of tap-ins! 1-0 Madrid!
Rayo having a good spell here. Jose Carlos twists and turns outside the box before striking at goal. The ball cannons off Xabi Alonso and goes out for a corner.
Dominguez steps up with a free kick for Rayo but, although hit with plenty of power, goes over the bar with no threat whatsoever being posed to Iker Casillas.
The ball into the box doesn't really come to much and Madrid manage to clear. The hosts will need to do better from set pieces you would feel, as Jose Mourinho's side have been awful at defending them this season.
Yellow Card Michael Essien
Leo shows great endeavor to burst out of his own half and drive at pace towards the Real Madrid defence, however he is cynically brought down by Xabi Alonso. Free kick to Rayo in a decent position.
Well that could have been the perfect start for Real Madrid. However, Pepe is denied by an excellent save. The home side will hope this pressure will subside at some point in the match as they have been under the cosh from the get-go.
Great save from Ruben!!! Pepe peels away to the back post and powerfully heads Angel Di Maria's free kick across goal but the Rayo goalkeeper stretches to palm it away!
Rayo aiming to get in the faces of Madrid early. Perhaps a bit too much though, as they have gave away a free kick in a dangerous position.
AND WE ARE OFF!
Well we've had a couple of sights of the park and it looks like the floodlights are back in business! Hoorah!
I'm Martin Macdonald, and I'll be reporting on the belated action this evening!
This is the staring XI of Real Madrid: Casillas; Arbeloa, Pepe, Sergio Ramos, Marcelo; Xabi Alonso, Essien; Modric, Di Maria, Cristiano Ronaldo; Benzema
The teams are in, and this is how Rayo will be lining up tonight: Ruben; Tito, Amat, Labaka, Casado; Carlos, Javi Fuego, Dominguez; Baptistao, Delibasic, Lass
Your intense 24 hour wait is over folks, so lets hope we have an entertaining match worthy of the delay!
This match was originally meant to take place on Sunday evening but was postponed due to vandals causing the floodlights to fault, so here we are rescheduled for this evening!
