Player Ratings: Sunderland 1-1 Stoke City

The 10-man Black Cats' earned a pressure point in their fight against the drop as John O'Shea's second-half equalizer negated Jonathan Walters opening goal.

    Simon Mignolet

Was glued to his line for Walters' goal and should have come and claimed the cross to ease the pressure on his defenders. Made a few late saves but had little to do throughout the game

  • Danny Rose

    Danny Rose

Defended well down the left and stopped any forward movement from Walters and Shotton. Going forward he provided Sunderland with energy but little quality as his first touch was often heavy.

  • John O'Shea

    John O'Shea

Was solid for the majority of the game and didn't let Crouch get the better of him in the air or the ground. Lovely finish for Sunderland's equaliser.

  • Carlos Javier Cuéllar

    Carlos Javier Cuéllar

Defended well and made crucial interventions, including one block from a Jerome shot that look goal-bound. Decent display from the Spaniard.

  • Alfred N'diaye
    3

    3.50

    Alfred N'diaye

A strong presence in the centre of midfield, sitting in front of his back four. Won the ball on many occasions and offloaded quickly and accurately to bring Sunderland's attacking players into the game.

  • Sebastian Larsson

    1
    2.00

    Sebastian Larsson

Anonymous for the Black Cats in the first half, he was weak in the tackle and provided no forward impetus for his side. Improved in the second half and put in a good cross for his side's equaliser.

  • Craig Gardner

Craig Gardner Flop of the Match

Deservedly sent off for a reckless challenge on Adam, his studs were raised and his foot went right into the ankle of the Scot. Beforehand he was an outlet going forward but his final ball lacked quality. Allowed Walters to peel off him for the goal.

  • Jack Colback
    2
    0
    3.00

    Jack Colback

Was poor in the first half and didn't really get into the game at all until Gardner's sending off forced him to move to right-back. Defensively he was sound and tried to raid forward when he could.

  • Adam Johnson
    10
    1
    4.00

Adam Johnson Top of the Match

Was probably Sunderland's best player in the game, always trying to make things happen when he got the ball. Grew frustrated as team-mates failed to make runs, which resulted in him often going it alone with little success.

  • James McClean
    1
    1
    2.00

    James McClean

Wasted several opportunities going forward, often choosing the wrong ball in the final third. Did not track back as much as should have done and allowed Stoke to attack space

  • Danny Graham
    2
    1
    2.50

    Danny Graham

Always on the move up front, working tirelessly, but was marked out of the game by Shawcross and Huth. The supply into him was poor and too often aimed at his head and not into feet, where he thrives.

Substitutions

  • Phil Bardsley

    0

    Phil Bardsley

Came on in place of Johnson in the final embers of the match as Sunderland sought to preserve their point.

  • David Vaughan

    David Vaughan

Came on late and didn't have time to make an impact.

  • Asmir Begovic

    3.00

    Asmir Begovic

Could do no nothing with the Sunderland's equaliser, as O'Shea fired in from close range. Handling and kicking were solid throughout the game.

  • Robert Huth
    1
    1
    3.00

    Robert Huth

Was dominant in the air and used his physical presence to dominate Graham. Solid in the tackle and was wary of runners from deep.

  • Marc Wilson
    0
    1
    2.00

    Marc Wilson

Was tested at times by the runs of Johnson and occasionally let runners in behind him. Was replaced at half-time by Cameron.

  • Ryan Shawcross
    2
    0
    3.00

    Ryan Shawcross

Solid as a rock throughout the game. He didn't give Graham an inch to move and was always aware of the striker's position. He could do nothing to prevent the equaliser.

  • Ryan Shotton
    0
    2
    2.00

    Ryan Shotton

Struggled at times with the threat of Johnson and allowed him to beat him on too many occasions. Did not raid forward as much as he should have.

  • Steven N'Zonzi
    1
    2
    2.50

    Steven N'Zonzi

Decent first half but he faded in the second period. His distribution was poor and he failed to win the midfield battle against Larsson and N'Diaye.

  • Charlie Adam
    2
    1
    3.50

    Charlie Adam

Had a pretty good evening. Played a lovely ball to create pressure in the six-yard box from a corner which resulted in Walters' goal and was at the heart of everything Stoke did going forwards but at times picked the wrong pass in the final third.

  • Dean Whitehead
    1
    1
    3.00

    Dean Whitehead

Was booked for early on for dragging back Johnson. Sat in front of the defence and halted any attacking momentum Sunderland built up. He was disciplined and didn't over commit.

  • Jonathan Walters
    2
    2
    3.50

    Jonathan Walters

Showed predatory instinct to pounce when the ball was loose in the box to put his side into the lead in the ninth minute. Struggled to match his early impact, though, and faded as the game wore on.

  • Peter Crouch
    0
    2
    2.50

    Peter Crouch

Held the ball up fairly well but wasn't a threat for most of the game as Cuellar and O'Shea handled him well. Was guilty of losing possession at crucial times upfield.

  • Cameron Jerome
    2
    1
    2.00

    Cameron Jerome

Had a quiet game and was not able to use his pace to get in behind the Sunderland defence, not did he offer much else going forward.

Substitutions

  • Geoff Cameron
    1
    2
    2.50

    Geoff Cameron

Struggled against Sunderland's left flank and was often beaten on the overlap, which occasionally put his side in trouble.

  • Matthew Etherington
    1
    1
    2.00

    Matthew Etherington

On too late to make and impact.

  • Kenwyne Jones
    2
    1

    Kenwyne Jones

Came on as a late substitute for Crouch as Stoke looked to grab a goal against the tiring ten men of Sunderland.
