Live Commentary

  • Anyway thanks for joining us on this afternoon and be sure to stick around on site for all the reaction from all of Saturday's Premier League games.
  • Huge opportunity to pull away from danger missed by the Latics although it could be argued they deserved a point for their second half display. Maloney's first half miss and losing Alcaraz in the first half didn't help, neither did Jaaskelainen having an inspired afternoon between the sticks for West Ham.
  • FULL TIME and West Ham celebrate a hard earned win to smash through 40 point barrier and guarantee they'll be a Premier League club next season. Wigan can't offer similar assurances as they remain entrenched in the bottom three.
  • 90' + 2'
    Yellow Card James Collins
Still time for Collins to go into the referees book after a foul on Maloney.
  • 90' + 2'
Again its West Ham who go closest to scoring again. After Wigan deliver a flurry of balls into the penalty area the home side break and Jarvis crosses deep for Carroll but the striker's header fails to trouble Joel.
  • 90'
Four minutes added at Upton Park. Four more minutes for Wigan to endure.
  • 86'
    SubstitutionJordi Gómez Franco Di Santo
Franco Di Santon on for a visibly dejected Jordi Gomez. Too little, too late for Wigan it has to be said.
  • 85'
Carroll bursts on to long pass and outstrips Boyce into the penalty area but can't quite squeeze the ball in at the near post. Wigan looking deflated.
  • 80'
    Assist Andy Carroll
  • 80'
    Goal Kevin Nolan
Thats 100 Premier League goals for Kevin Nolan and that's three points in the bag for West Ham. Carroll controls a long punt on his chest before acrobatically flicking the ball on for Nolan to find the bottom corner with a sublime finish.
  • 75'
    SubstitutionMohamed Diame Jack Collison
Jack Collison comes on for West Ham for the last quarter as Mohamed Diame makes way.
  • 75'
    Yellow Card Joe Cole
Cole hasn't contributed much since coming on for West Ham but earns himself a yellow card for grabbing the ball on the ground after conceding a free-kick.
  • 71'
Jaaskelainen bails West Ham out again with another superb stop to deny McArthur from close range after he connected with Maloney's low cross from the right.
  • 69'
Another chance goes begging for Wigan. Good hold-up play from Kone sees him feed the unmarked Beausejour inside the penalty area but the winger's control is poor and he shoots straight at Jaaskelainen.
  • 66'
Wigan send cross after cross into the West Ham box with the latest ending up at the feet of McArthur 20-yards from goal and the Latics midfielder stings the palms of Jaakelanain with a fierce strike. They're getting closer.
  • 62'
Heart in mouth moment for Jaaskelainen. Figueroa picks out Emmerson Boyce with a cross and his header is spilled by the West Ham keeper, who frantically pounces on the ball and grips it towards his chest.
  • 61'
    SubstitutionRicardo Vaz Te Joe Cole
Cheers emanate around Upton Park as Joe Cole makes his way towards the touchline and prepares to enter. Ricardo Vaz Te makes way.
  • 60'
West Ham penned in their own half with Wigan stepping up their efforts to restore parity. Unfortunately for the visitors they left their cutting edge at home.
  • 58'
Diame has a taste for goals after his stunning strike against Manchester United on Wednesday. Sadly for the West Ham enforcer his cross-cum-shot, intended for the top corner, only finds the gloves of Joel. Wigan survive again.
  • 56'
Figueroa takes aim from distance but fails to trouble Jaaskelainen as his well hit strike bends past the post. Close, but unfortunately for Wigan, no cigar.
  • 55'
Again nice build-up play from the Hammers. Noble clips the ball into Nolan, who turns it into the path of Jarvis but the winger can't quite take control and a grateful Joel is able to gather.
  • 53'
Carroll receives the ball on the edge of the ball on the edge of the penalty area, drops a shoulder to engineer some space but can't direct his right-footed effort on target.
  • 52'
    SubstitutionGary O'Neil Mark Noble
Mark Noble comes on for his second appearance since returning from a shoulder injury. Gary O'Neil the player to make way.
  • 49'
Nolan trips Maloney out on the left, conceding a free kick in a dangerous position. The Wigan man takes it himself but its wasted as he floats it behind and out of play.
  • 46'
    SubstitutionCallum McManaman James McArthur
Teams are back out and ready for the second half. Wigan have also made a second change with Callum McManaman being replaced by James McArthur.
  • 45'
Good start from the Latics as Gomez tests Gomez tests Jaaskelainen from a tight angle.
  • Wigan get the second half underway as they begin their quest for an equaliser.
  • West Ham ended the half well on the front foot but can't afford to slack off after the break. Even if the goal was somewhat fortunate the Hammers are making their physical advantage count. Carroll has been a nuisance and Diame a driving force in midfield against his old club.
  • Plenty of work for Roberto Martinez to do at the break. Wigan started the better of the two teams and should have led in the 10th minute if it wasn't for Maloney's poor finishing when clean through on goal. He may just come to rue that miss come 16:45.
  • Half time at Upton Park and its West Ham who lead courtesy of Matt Jarvis' second goal of the season.
  • 45'
    Yellow Card Gary Caldwell
Cynical foul from Caldwell to halt Carroll's progress with a body check as he tries to meet a pass from the left flank. One of the easiest yellow cards the referee will dish out today.
  • 42'
Figueroa darts into the penalty area and theatrically throws himself to the floor under duress from Demel. Referee Swarbrick waves the Wigan man to his feet.
  • 38'
Wigan living dangerously as they allow West Ham to line up and take aim with Collins and Diame seeing their strikes blocked, the latter of which is deflected behind off Caldwell.
  • 36'
Gomez picks up the ball in an advanced position but has little movement in front of him. Wigan really struggling to create anything in the final third.
  • 33'
From a Gary O'Neil free-kick the ball is worked to Jarvis who fizzes in a cross from the left that finds Vaz Te on the edge of the area and despite showing good control and poise to spin on the ball he can only fire straight at Joel.
  • 30'
Carroll manages to work some space on the edge of the Wigan box but doesn't connect well and slices the ball into the stands. Visitors caught cold on the counter again.
  • 26'
West Ham cries for a penalty as Nolan tries to connect with Mohamed Diame's pass with two Wigan players sliding in and bringing him down. All appeals are waved away to the consternation of Sam Allardyce.
  • 21'
    Assist Joey O'Brien
  • 21'
    Goal Matt Jarvis
Finally the deadlock has been made at Upton Park and its the home side who've taken the lead. Matt Jarvis takes possession on the left and whips a dangerous right-footed cross into the penalty area that evades every outstretched leg and nestles in the bottom corner.
  • 18'
    Yellow Card Andy Carroll
Referee Neil Swarbrick stops play and flashes a yellow card in Carroll's direction.
  • 17'
Maloney wastes another good chance for Wigan as he curls a free kick from 20-yards onto the top of the net.
  • 16'
    SubstitutionA. Alcáraz Jean Beausejour
Wigan forced into an early substitution with Jean Beausejour coming on to replace Antolin Alcaraz.
  • 13'
A free kick is clipped into the Wigan penalty area for Nolan to control but his half volley is beaten away by Joel.
  • 10'
Brilliant goalkeeping from Jaaskelainen to deny Shaun Maloney on the break. The Wigan attacker is sent through one-on-one but the Finnish goalkeeper stands tall and denies Maloney with a point blank save. Big let-off for West Ham.
  • 8'
West Ham enjoying a good spell of possession after Wigan's early pressure and force a corner that James Collins flicks on for Kevin Nolan but the Hammers skipper isn't alert and sends the ball way over the bar from close range.
  • 5'
The visitors showing plenty of early intent going forward in the early stages and West Ham are indebted to Winston Reid for cutting out a dangerous pass into the penalty area from Maynor Figueroa.
  • 3'
Typically neat build up from Wigan sees them knock the ball from right to left and tee up Antonin Alcaraz to shoot straight at Jussi Jaaskelainen from 20-yards. Easy gather for the West Ham keeper.
  • 2'
Guy Demel and Jordi Gomez have words in the corner after the Wigan attacker nudges the West Ham man to the ground as he attempts to shepherd the ball out of play.
  • And West Ham get us underway at Upton Park. Hold on to your hats!
  • Teams are out and running through their final preparations before kick-off.
  • West Ham, on the other hand, are all but safe but Sam Allardyce isn't the type of manager that leaves anything to chance. Reaching that 40-point safety net remains his short-term objective and he'll be confident of doing that after watching his side give Manchester United a run for their money earlier this week.
  • After so many great escapes this could be a defining day for Wigan's season. Victory would put them in a dominant position outside the bottom three, especially with Aston Villa taking on Manchester United on Monday evening. They can't afford to drop points today and Roberto Martinez will be aware that there is no margin for error.
  • Roberto Martinez makes two changes to the side that narrowly lost to Manchester City in mid-week. Gary Caldwell and Callum McManaman come in for Jean Beausejour and Franco Di Santo with Martinez switching to four at the back instead of the usual three man rearguard.
  • Wigan: Joel; Alcaraz, Caldwell, Scharner, Figueroa; Boyce, Gomez, McCarthy; McManaman, Kone, Maloney. Subs: Di Santo, Henriquez, McArthur, Espinoza, Beausejour, Stam, Al Habsi
  • Hammers boss Sam Allardyce goes with the same starting XI that held champions elect Manchester United to a 2-2 draw on Wednesday. That means Andy Carroll leads the line once again and recent returnee Mark Noble has to be content with a place on the bench.
  • West Ham: Jaaskelainen; Demel, Collins, Reid, O'Brien; Diame, O'Neil; Jarvis, Nolan, Vaz Te; Carroll. Subs: C.Cole, Collison, Henderson, Taylor, Noble, Pogatetz, J.Cole.
  • Good afternoon and welcome to's LIVE commentary of West Ham vs Wigan from Upton Park. This is a huge game for the Latics, who were walking out at Wembley last week but are are back to scrapping for their lives in the Premier League basement. Three points today would lift them out of the relegation zone.
