    Asmir Begovic

Could do nothing to deny Agbonlahor from close range early on but made good saves from Benteke and Weimann in the first half to keep his side in the game. He had a quiet second half as Stoke controlled more of the game but he could not get to Lowton’s long range wonder goal or stop Benteke late on.

    Geoff Cameron

The American struggled at full back against the pace of Agbonlahor and really found it tough to keep the visitors at bay. He did his best for the early goal but couldn’t block the second attempt from Agbonlahor. Going forward he offered little, much to the frustration of the home fans.

  • Robert Huth

    Robert Huth

Not his commanding normal self at the back for the Potters, with the strength and power of Benteke causing him considerable trouble and his passing was awful throughout the game.

  • Marc Wilson

    Marc Wilson

Handled Bowery well, giving the youngster very little opportunity to get into dangerous positions to cross into the penalty area. However he could do nothing to stop Lowton in the build-up to Agbonlahor’s early goal. His afternoon was ended early by injury and he was replaced by Jerome in the 53rd minute.

  • Ryan Shawcross

    2.50

    Ryan Shawcross

Battled well with the powerful Benteke but was not able to keep the big striker under control as he used his strength to hold the Potters captain off regularly. He made some good interceptions and did his best to keep Villa quiet but it was a tough task.

  • Ryan Shotton

Ryan Shotton Flop of the Match

Playing on the right side of the midfield Shotton gave the ball away far too often and the crowd got on his back for that reason which knocked his confidence a little bit. He did deliver some good crosses but Walters and Jones were unable to get on the end of them, and generally his distribution was poor.

  • Steven N'Zonzi

    2.50

    Steven N'Zonzi

Did his best to protect his defense against the threat of Weimann and generally he managed it well, while also providing defensive height to cope with Benteke. He also looked to get forward whenever he could.

  • Dean Whitehead

    2.50

    Dean Whitehead

Worked hard in the middle of the pitch but struggled to get a grip on the game which often allowed Villa to control the match. He made some important tackles when required but offered very little going forward.

  • Matthew Etherington

    Matthew Etherington

The winger returned from injury to make the starting line-up but failed to have any impact on the game. His time on the sidelines made it hard for him to adjust to the pace of the game and he was replaced by Kightly at the break.

  • Kenwyne Jones

    Kenwyne Jones

He was full of energy throughout, putting pressure on the Villa defense when he could and was Stoke’s best attacking option in a quiet first half. The introduction of Jerome in the second half helped him get into the game more as he linked well with the pacey striker.

  • Jonathan Walters

    3.00

    Jonathan Walters

Offered a good threat going forward and supported the midfield well, he won headers against Vlaar and linked nicely with Jones but was never able to fire a shot at goal. He moved to a wider role after the introduction of Jerome but offered little.

    Charlie Adam

Much to the home crowd’s delight he replaced Shotton in the 77th minute, and within three minutes he had created the equalizing goal for Kightly.

    Michael Kightly

Replaced Etherington at the break and took his time to get into the game but with 10 minutes to play he was in the perfect place to fire past Guzan from Adam’s touch.

  • Cameron Jerome

    Cameron Jerome

Replaced Wilson in the 53rd minute and brought real pace to the Stoke attack which worried the Villa defense and gave the hosts the impetus to equalize.

  • Bradley Guzan

    Bradley Guzan

He dominated his area well, coming to claim crosses that were fired into his penalty area. He wasn’t always able to catch the crosses but chose the right moments to punch the ball clear. He didn’t have many shots to save as Stoke struggled to make any real chances.

  • Ron Vlaar

    Ron Vlaar

Had a good battle with Jones throughout and he did very well against the big striker, winning lots of headers and muscling him off the ball when required.

  • Joseph Bennett

    Joseph Bennett

He has had a tough time this season but he did well against Shotton, keeping the winger very quiet and forcing him to give the ball away on numerous occasions. He provided a good threat going forward and worked well with Agbonlahor down the left.

  • Nathan Baker

    Nathan Baker

He worked well with Vlaar at the back for Villa in controlling Jones, Walters and Jerome throughout the game. None of the strikers were able to really test Guzan thanks to the strong defending by Baker, and he was a threat in Stoke’s penalty area.

  • Matthew Lowton

    Matthew Lowton

The young full back sealed the victory for his side with a world class finish from 30 yards, controlling the ball on his chest before sending the ball past Begovic. He started the game very well too as he drifted into the penalty area to set up Agbonlahor in the 9th minute. He used this as a good starting block for the game which he did well in, staying very close to Etherington in the opening half and Kightly in the second.

  • Ashley Westwood

Ashley Westwood Top of the Match

Did excellently in the engine room for Villa, making himself available for a pass at all times and linking up well with his team mates to retain possession which frustrated the hosts. He never gave N’Zonzi a moment’s peace in attacking areas and broke up a lot of promising Stoke moves.

  • Fabian Delph

    Fabian Delph

Looked better alongside Westwood as they had the better of the game against N’Zonzi and Whitehead. He made plenty of tackles and did everything he could to protect his back four. He tired as the game wore on which allowed Stoke to have a bit more possession in dangerous positions.

  • Gabriel Agbonlahor

    Gabriel Agbonlahor

Started the game brilliantly with an early goal that showed his goalscoring abilities. He could have added to his tally but Begovic did well to deny him, but overall it was a very good display from the forward who caused problems all day.

  • C. Benteke

    C. Benteke

Another impressive performance from the striker. He held the ball up superbly and fought off the attentions of Shawcross and Huth to bring others into the game. His movement was a constant threat and he was rewarded with a goal late.

  • Jordan Nathaniel Bowery

    Jordan Nathaniel Bowery

A solid performance from the forward playing on the right hand side of Villa’s three attacking midfielders. He did well against Wilson although struggled to beat him at times, however he didn’t let that bother him as he kept possession well. And had a Weimann pass not been poorly played he could have tested Begovic.

  • Andreas Weimann

    Andreas Weimann

Drifted in and out of the game but was a threat when he had the ball at his feet, he showed Huth a clear pair of heels in the first half but saw his effort hit the post and bounce to safety. He continued to threaten in support of Benteke and picked up on some of the striker’s knock downs but he was unable to test Begovic.
