Player Ratings: Tottenham 0-1 Fulham

Spurs were dealt a blow in the race for the top four as former striker Dimitar Berbatov came back to haunt his old club, scoring the only goal in Sunday's match at White Hart Lane

    Hugo Lloris

Was as much a spectator as the White Hart Lane crowd until Berbatov passed the ball past him. Always prowling the edge of the box, ready to sweep up danger. Will be disappointed to have conceded despite barely featuring in the match.

  • Jan Vertonghen

    Jan Vertonghen

Got forward well from left-back in the first half before moving to his regular centre-back position after the restart where he was less accomplished. Was caught too high up the pitch for Fulham's winning goal and allowed Dejagah to burst past him.

  • Kyle Naughton

    Kyle Naughton

He occasionally drifted too far away from his position, meandering infield, which left space for Riise to exploit on the overlap but was otherwise diligent and defended well. Fulham offered little threat down his flank.

  • Michael Dawson

    Michael Dawson

The captain was imperious in the air, swatting away crosses and regularly beating Hangeland on set plays. Never troubled before being taken off at half-time.

  • Benoit Assou-Ekotto

    Benoit Assou-Ekotto

Lined up, unusually, on the left wing but never looked comfortable there and provided little threat. Moved to left-back in the second half, though was immediately at fault, allowing Riether to burst in behind him in the build-up to Fulham's opener. Didn't defend well and criminally one-footed, while his crossing was often woeful.

  • Steven Caulker

    Steven Caulker

Was calm and assured at the back when alongside Dawson, though looked more naive and vulnerable when the captain departed. Allowed Berbatov to steal a yard on him for the opening goal.

  • Scott Parker

    Scott Parker

Gave a performance full of blood and thunder, and he left the field with the dirtiest shirt on show, but far too slow and ponderous on the ball – even in comparison to the veteran Karagounis.

  • Mousa Dembélé

    Mousa Dembélé

As busy as ever, gobbling up space, challenging players, tackling and pressing. He was constantly on the move, constantly providing an outlet, and battled well in the middle of the pitch. Tired in the second half and was replaced.

  • Gylfi Sigurdsson

    Gylfi Sigurdsson

Cut a periperhal figure on the right of midfield and showed none of the spark and creativity that had been present in recent showings. Struggled to affect the match and was replaced by Defoe as Spurs chased an equaliser.

  • Gareth Bale

    Gareth Bale

One again had a free role, but found his space limited by Fulham's two, solid banks of four. He was reduced to taking optimistic shots from range and didn't look comfortable after picking up an injury in the first half.

  • Emmanuel Adebayor
    2

    2.50

    Emmanuel Adebayor

Worked very hard up front, running the channels and pressing the Fulham centre-backs, but had little to show for his effort. Received little supply and was let down by his poor first touch and inaccurate passing.

Substitutions

  • Thomas Carroll

    Thomas Carroll

Replaced Dembele with half an hour remaining and brought real craft to the midfield, offloading the ball quickly and probing the defence. A promising performance from the youngster

  • Clint Dempsey

    Clint Dempsey

Came on in place of Dawson at half-time and looked eager to silence the Fulham crowd who booed his appearance. Worked hard and was bullish, contesting fiercely, but offered little real quality and had virtually no affect on the match.

  • Jermain Defoe

Jermain Defoe Flop of the Match

Came on for Sigurdsson as Spurs chased an equaliser. Had several good chances but was criminally wasteful, thumping the ball at Schwarzer from close range on two occasions. A really poor cameo from the England striker.

  • Mark Schwarzer

Mark Schwarzer Top of the Match

Calm and reliable between the sticks, the Australian keeper wasn't overly worked in the first half but made key stops when it mattered in the second - notably to deny Defoe rom close range on two occasions.

  • John Arne Riise

    John Arne Riise

Married attack and defence well, marshalling first Sigurdsson and then Bale and was rarely beaten by either. Also got forward well, and was on hand to head Bale's goalbound header off the line.

  • Philippe Senderos

    Philippe Senderos

Competed well with Adebayor in the air, though looked troubled by his pace when the ball was on the deck. Tottenham didn't target his mobility enough, and he was able to simply thump headers clear from the sanctuary of his 18-yard line.

  • Brede Hangeland

    3.50

    Brede Hangeland

Often under pressure from Adebayor, but never wilted and remained composed on the ball. Enjoyed his tussle with Togo forward, rising highest to head clear on several occasions. An imposing, solid display.

  • Sascha Riether
    6

    4.00

    Sascha Riether

Got forward well down the right, providing dollops of width, and was rarely beaten at the back - though benefitted from Spurs' absence of a genuine winger. Did brilliantly to surge forward and cross for Berbatov to score.

  • Steve Sidwell

    Steve Sidwell

A gutsy, tenacious performance from the midfielder, who battle hard in the middle of the pitch and made life extremely difficult for Tottenham. He was particularly effective on the ball, but was robust and hard-working off it.

  • Giorgos Karagounis
    14

    3.50

    Giorgos Karagounis

Showed that, even at 36 years of age, he still has heaps of quality, mixing it in the middle of the pitch and using the ball well. Dictated much of the play for Fulham and battled hard before being substituted.

  • Damien Duff
    6
    0
    2.50

    Damien Duff

Barely featured in the match, never running at the Tottenham defence or working the space to cross. A passenger in the match offensively, though, like the rest of the Fulham team, worked very hard.

  • Ashkan Dejagah
    22
    0
    3.50

    Ashkan Dejagah

Regularly came in field and helped outnumber Spurs' holding duo in the middle, and was inventive and probing on the ball. Played a key role in Fulham's goal and was a lively presence.

  • Dimitar Berbatov
    48
    0
    3.50

    Dimitar Berbatov

Often exuded his usual laziness, but his class was always bubbling under the surface, trapping the ball with grace and ease. Linked play well when he received the ball, though that wasn't often. Was on hand to calmly pass the ball past Lloris to open the scoring.

  • Bryan Ruiz

    Bryan Ruiz

Really struggled to find space in the hole with Dembele and Parker immediately swarming him. Worked hard off the ball, tracking runners and closing space, but wasn't the creative, influencial force he can be.

Came on in place of Karagounis with a little under 15 minutes remaining and battled hard in midfield, bringing fresh legs to the battle.
