Player Ratings: Sunderland 2-2 Fulham

The Black Cats came back from two goals down to secure a point through Craig Gardner's penalty and a great hit from the lively Stephane Sessgnon

    Simon Mignolet

Awarded the Player of the Year award from North East football writers in the week, but had an afternoon to forget. He failed to outwit Berbatov from the spot and could only gift Riether his goal by parrying Dejagah's shot into the German's path, but redeemed himself with a low block at Berbatov's feet.

  • John O'Shea

    John O'Shea

Had very little to do in defence as the Black Cats dominated possession and managed to quell Berbatov's threat at the head of Fulham's attack for the large part.

  • Titus Bramble

    2.50

    Titus Bramble

Looked a little shaky in possession, but put in a couple of booming tackles and clearances to clear danger when it arose.

  • Alfred N'diaye

    3.00

    Alfred N'diaye

Stormed around midfield, particularly targeting Ruiz for strong (but largely fair) treatment when the Costa Rican was on the ball. Sat deep and allowed Larsson to venture forward on occasion.

  • Sebastian Larsson

    2.00

    Sebastian Larsson

Got his foot in alongside N'Diaye and sprayed a couple of fine passes into the flanks. His set pieces are often lauded, but his radar seemed off for much of the game, with several deliveries hitting the first man.

  • Craig Gardner

    2.00

    Craig Gardner

Continued at right back but struggled severely against the pace of Dejagah. Nevertheless, was unlucky to concede a penalty as the Iranian tumbled under his challenge. Got his side back into things with a tremendous penalty, which was arrowed right into the top corner.

  • Jack Colback

    Jack Colback

Kept Duff quiet for the first half and Dejagah's considerable threat dropped off when he switched to the flame-haired left-footer's flank after the break. Rarely ventured forward, but was very solid at the back.

  • Adam Johnson

Adam Johnson Flop of the Match

Struggled against the impressive Riether on the left. Was fortunate to be involved in Sessegnon's goal as the Benin man picked up the ball after his low cross was scuffed straight at Senderos.

  • Stéphane Sessegnon

Stéphane Sessegnon Top of the Match

Moved to the right wing to accommodate Fletcher and Graham's partnership, and looked a threat against Riise. Got his side back on level terms as he drifted infield and slammed a low shot in after Johnson's cross was blocked.

  • Danny Graham

    Danny Graham

Sat deeper than Fletcher for the most part and looked to link the play with the midfield. Wasted a gilt-edged chance early in the second half, scuffing an effort straight at Schwarzer after the Scot's effort was blocked into his path.

  • Steven Fletcher

    Steven Fletcher

Another frustrating afternoon for the striker who has netted in just one game since the turn of the year. Had one glorious chance to score his side's third goal but could only nod the ball at Hangeland inside the six-yard box.

Substitutions

  • James McClean

    James McClean

Came on for Graham, altering Sunderland's shape somewhat and attacked Riether on the flank, without creating anything clear-cut.

  • Mark Schwarzer

    3.00

    Mark Schwarzer

Helpless to save either of Sunderland's goals, but was a forceful presence behind his defense as Sunderland threw everything at his net in the game's closing stages.

  • John Arne Riise

    2.50

    John Arne Riise

Got up the left well and sent in a couple of dangerous crosses into the box, but was given a tough time by Sessegnon in defense, with the Benin man often getting past him with trickery and pace.

  • Philippe Senderos
    0
    0
    2.50

    Philippe Senderos

A beast in the air against Graham and Fletcher, but let himself down badly as he blatantly tugged on the former's shirt to concede a penalty immediately after Fulham had doubled their advantage.

  • Brede Hangeland
    0
    1
    3.50

    Brede Hangeland

Stayed strong against the Black Cats' second-half bombardment of crosses and also showed a neat touch on the ball, often bringing it out of defense on the floor, but also forced it clear when required.

  • Sascha Riether
    0
    1
    3.50

    Sascha Riether

Strong and committed against Adam Johnson on the flank. Showed tremendous desire to spring forward as Fulham cleared a Sunderland corner and was rewarded with an easy goal after Mignolet parried Dejagah's effort.

  • Steve Sidwell

    Steve Sidwell

Tackled well in midfield and seemed to be a magnet for Sunderland set pieces, clearing several away throughout the game. Kept things simple in possession, picking out open teammates with each pass.

  • Giorgos Karagounis
    2
    0
    1.50

    Giorgos Karagounis

Tried to dictate the play from a deeper position, but the Cottagers' counterattacking style often bypassed him in the middle. Replaced after 64 largely anonymous minutes by Frimpong.

  • Damien Duff
    0
    0
    2.00

    Damien Duff

A quiet game for the former Newcastle man. Dejagah was the main outlet for the Cottagers in the first half, and they barely attacked after the break. Replaced by Emanuelsen late on.

  • Ashkan Dejagah
    6
    0
    3.50

    Ashkan Dejagah

Gave Gardner a torrid time with his pace on the left, although was fortunate to win the penalty for Berbatov's opener as there appeared to be little contact from the former Birmingham man. His pace was a massive threat on both flanks and he also had a big hand in his side's second goal.

  • Dimitar Berbatov
    11
    0
    3.00

    Dimitar Berbatov

Kept his cool to slot his penalty past Mignolet in the 16th minute but cut a frustrated figure up front for much of the game. Denied a second by Mignolet as the Belgian bravely stopped at his feet.

  • Bryan Ruiz
    1
    0
    2.50

    Bryan Ruiz

Found himself harried and muscled off the ball often by Larsson and N'Diaye, but remained committed. Set up Berbatov's one-on-one chance with a lovely scooped pass over the defense.

Substitutions

  • Emmanuel Frimpong

    2.50

    Emmanuel Frimpong

Came on in place of Karagounis to add a touch more steel to Fulham's midfield, but the hosts scored soon after his introduction.

  • Urby Emanuelson

    Urby Emanuelson

A late replacement for Duff. Not enough time to make an impact.

  • Hugo Rodallega

    Hugo Rodallega

Given a short run-out after coming on for Dejagah.
