Player Ratings: Reading 0-3 Wigan

Two Arouna Kone goals just before the half-time whistle stunned the Royals, with a third from Maynor Figueroa and a Pavel Pogrebnyak red card adding to their miserable afternoon

By John Stammers

  • Adam Federici

    Adam Federici

Made a good early save to deny Di Santo and then another later in the first half to keep out Kone. Could do nothing to deny the goals though and saved from Figueroa and Gomez late on too.

  • Adrian Mariappa

    Adrian Mariappa

Made a number of fine sliding tackles and interceptions, but like his center-back partner was nowhere near dominant enough for Kone's first or tight enough for his second. Part of a defense that allowed Wigan to stroll in for a third after the break, too.

  • Sean Morrison

    Sean Morrison

Didn't always look organized and that showed when Wigan opened the scoring from a set-piece. Headed clear from underneath his own crossbar but later went missing for Kone's second and failed to stop the third.

  • Ian Harte

    Ian Harte

His free kicks were, as always, a threat, but didn't offer much else going forward. Kone found space on the Irishman's side for his second goal.

  • Stephen Kelly

    Stephen Kelly

Fairly solid display initially from the full-back who kept Beausejour at bay most of the time. Could have offered more on the front foot. Like his teammates, though, collapsed after the break as Wigan took control.

  • Jem Karacan

    Jem Karacan

Lost Di Santo in the build-up to his early chance but crossed for Akpan's opportunity. Broke up a number of attacks before they could materialize.

    Mikele Leigertwood

Neither here nor there in midfield really, broke up some attacks but failed to create many himself. Earned a booking for a rash challenge.

  • Jobi McAnuff

    Jobi McAnuff

Caused some problems with a couple of set-piece deliveries but wasn't as threatening as he can be.

  • Jimmy Kebe

    Jimmy Kebe

At times generated a buzz from crowd when he got the ball with his direct style. Went close to opening the scores after some good movement in the area and created a brilliant chance for Pogrebnyak. Some of his touches and what should have been simple passes were suspect, however, and he faded after the break.

  • Hope Akpan

    Hope Akpan

Should have tested Al-Habsi with an early header. Put another shot well wide, but worked hard and attempted to drive forward when he could. Sacrificed for Le Fondre at the half-way stage.

  • Pavel Pogrebnyak

Pavel Pogrebnyak Flop of the Match

Able to bully his marker at times, though his link-up play was poor and he failed to create anything of note. Would have scored if it wasn't for Scharner's tackle. Sent off for a terrible tackle on Figueroa which effectively ended his side's chances of a comeback in the second half.

    Garath McCleary

Sent on for Karacan to try and salvage something from the game, but it was too late.

  • Adam Le Fondre

    Adam Le Fondre

Replaced Akpan at the break to add to Reading's attack, but became isolated after Pogrebnyak's red.

  • Noel Hunt

    Noel Hunt

Came on for Kebe after Pogrebnyak saw red, worked hard but to little effect.

  • Ali Al Habsi

    3.00

    Ali Al Habsi

Had virtually nothing to do in the first half, and it was the same story after the break as his side complete dominated matters.

  • Gary Caldwell
    3
    1
    3.50

    Gary Caldwell

Dominated by Pogrebnyak in the early stages but improved with the game. Attacked Beausejour's corner before seeing his misdirected header set-up his side's opening goal.

  • Emmerson Boyce
    2
    1
    2.50

    Emmerson Boyce

On occasion looked like he could create something on the right flank but didn't have much influence until Reading were down and out and he was allowed more space.

  • Maynor Figueroa
    5
    0
    3.50

    Maynor Figueroa

Too often gave Kebe too much room on his side in the first period, but fortunately saw the winger fail to capitalize. Directed Caldwell's header goalwards before Kone got the definitive final touch and then did get one himself in a decisive breakaway. Forced Federici into a good late save, too.

  • James McCarthy

    James McCarthy

Solid game in the middle of midfield and passed the ball around with exemplary neatness, though had little to deal with from a flat Reading side.

  • James McArthur

    James McArthur

Tracked back well but gave Reading a great chance when he allowed himself to be caught in possession by Akpan.

  • Jean Beausejour

    3.50

    Jean Beausejour

Found space early on in the game but failed to really trouble the Reading defense. His corner led to the first goal and his fantastic ball did set up Kone's second, though, and like his team-mates improved after the break.

  • Paul Scharner

    Paul Scharner

Didn't have much luck in the air against Pogrebnyak but made up for it with a goal-saving tackle.

  • Arouna Kone

    Arouna Kone

When he managed to turn and run at the hosts' backline he looked a handful, but for the majority of the first half that didn't happen. Popped up where it mattered with two goals before the break, though, the second a superb finish. Was better in the second half, too.

  • Franco Di Santo

Franco Di Santo Top of the Match

Created himself a good early chance but saw Federici equal to it. Continued to be lively and also helped defend set-pieces well. Assisted the third with a neat return pass to Figueroa and grew with confidence as his movement troubled Reading's defense.

  • Shaun Maloney

    Shaun Maloney

Started the game brightly as his energetic movement caused Harte problems, but faded away as the game went on. Still popped up with the occasional neat touch, though.

Substitutions

  • Antolín Alcaraz

A late substitute as he replaced Boyce with under 10 minutes left.

    Jordi Gómez

Replaced the impressive Di Santo late in the second half and forced a brilliant stop for Federici.
