Player Ratings: Chelsea 0-0 Manchester City

The Blues played out a dull 0-0 in the first match of Rafa Benitez's new reign against the Premier League holders, with both sides' defenses the stars of the show.

  • Petr Cech

    Petr Cech

Largely untroubled, though did fumble a long range shot that almost fell into the path of Dzeko. Alert when he needed to be, though his distribution was often poor.

  • Branislav Ivanovic

    Branislav Ivanovic

Imperious in the air and won his duel against Dzeko, rising to head clear on numerous occasions. A little more worried by the mobility of Aguero. Drove out of defence with the ball.

  • Ashley Cole

    Ashley Cole

A solid performance, Milner and Silva got little joy down the right. When Zabaleta joined the attack however, Chelsea's left-back looked a little stretched. Cleared Dzeko's shot-cum-cross off the line, as he has made a habit of doing in his career.

  • David Luiz
    62
    17
    3.50

    David Luiz

Defended well, though on occasion opted to try and dribble out of defence when a clearance would have sufficed. Tussled well with Kompany & Co. at set pieces and caused problems in City's box.

  • César Azpilicueta
    66
    14
    3.50

    César Azpilicueta

Dealt with the threat of Milner well, and curbed the advances of the overlapping Kolarov. A good outlet for Chelsea down the right, using the ball to good effect and linking well with the players around him.

  • Ramires
    49
    21
    3.00

    Ramires

Didn't use the ball well and was outmuscled and outpaced by Toure in midfield. Contributed to Chelsea's solid midfield display, bringing energy and dynamism.

  • Oscar
    48
    41
    2.50

    Oscar

Much of his best work came in defence, pressing well and winning possession for his side. Looked bright on the break, but struggled to find space against a crowded and competitive City midfield.

  • John Obi Mikel
    54
    33
    3.50

    John Obi Mikel

A brick wall in the middle, starving his counterparts of space and closing down options. Bailed out his defence frequently and put out fires in midfield. Kept possession ticking over in the middle, but his short, conservative passing often forced Mata to drop too deep. Replaced by Romeu as Benitez pushed for a winner.

  • Eden Hazard
    46
    48
    3.00

    Eden Hazard

Looked a major threat when running at the Man City defence, but flitted in and out of the match. A foul magnet, he lured maroon shirts towards him only to burst away and draw a free-kick. Couldn't impact the match consistently and was replaced by Moses.

  • Fernando Torres
    101

Fernando Torres Flop of the Match

If Rafa Benitez's appointment was designed to wake Torres from his slumber, it did not work. Both sides' goalkeepers touched the ball more times than the Spaniard in the first half. He was hugely wasteful and shirked contests against City's centre-backs.

  • Juan Mata
    43
    48
    2.50

    Juan Mata

Dropped very deep in search of the ball, which reduced his effectiveness in the final third. Wasn't as dangerous and penetrative as he usually is. Linked well with Azpilicueta though, and kept the ball well.

Substitutions

  • Oriol Romeu

    Oriol Romeu

Came on for Mikel with 10 minutes remaining. Worked hard but didn't get on the ball enough.

  • Victor Moses
    39
    36

    Victor Moses

Came on in place of Hazard with 20 minutes remaining and looked lively on the break, though his final ball let him down.

  • Joe Hart
    24
    22
    3.00

    Joe Hart

Had a quiet game, but when forced into action he carried out his business with little fuss or drama. His kicking was often poor however.

  • Vincent Kompany
    43
    35
    3.50

Vincent Kompany Top of the Match

Showed no signs of the ankle injury that required heavy strapping, leading a solid defensive performance from the visitors. Made a fantastic recovery challenge to halt Torres and numerous blocks, as well as a number of interceptions and clearances. Gobbled up Torres on several occasions.

  • Pablo Zabaleta
    24
    26
    3.50

    Pablo Zabaleta

Gave a lung-busting, all-action performance. First to every ball, tackling, hassling. Also got forward to good effect and linked well with Silva.

  • Aleksandar Kolarov
    39
    24
    3.50

    Aleksandar Kolarov

As Silva and Milner drifted inside, the Serbian was often one-on-one against Azpilicueta, and struggled to beat the Spaniard. When he did however, his delivery was often dangerous. Rarely breached in defense.

  • Matija Nastasic
    30
    28
    3.00

    Matija Nastasic

Formed a strong partnership with Kompany and dealt with Torres well. Occasionally cumbersome, surviving more by luck than judgment. Calm and composed in possession, using the ball well. Could have scored in injury-time with a free header from a corner.

  • James Milner
    23
    31
    3.50

    James Milner

A busy, blustering display. Worked very hard, coming inside off the left wing to pack the midfield and aid Barry and Toure. Tracked back to help Kolarov and joined in attacks, but wasteful in the final third. Committed and tireless.

  • Gareth Barry
    15
    33
    3.50

    Gareth Barry

A destructive water-carrier, Barry cleaned up in front of his back four, identifying danger, tackling, intercepting. Starved Chelsea's offensive weapons of time and space and pressed with great tenacity and vigour.

  • David Silva
    26
    26
    2.50

    David Silva

Thrives in the hole, but the space between the lines was gobbled up by Mikel and Ramires. With his influence diluted, Silva didn't pull the strings in the manner we've come to expect.

  • Yaya Touré
    15
    38
    3.00

    Yaya Touré

A giant of a player, he held off challenges with ease, breezing past opponenets with his mix of pace and power. Combined well with Barry to form a barrier in front of the back four and limit the space available to Chelsea's attackers.

  • Edin Dzeko
    65
    60
    2.00

    Edin Dzeko

A frustrated figure up front, Dzeko gave a languid, ineffective performance. Showed none of the directness, tenacity or threat that have accompanied previous performances off the bench. Static and uninvolved compared to Tevez. Was replaced by Tevez with 20 minutes remaining.

  • Sergio Agüero
    18
    54
    2.50

    Sergio Agüero

Played behind Dzeko in the first half, dropping off the tall Bosnian, and wasn't as dangerous as he's been when hanging on the shoulder of the last man. Missed a sitter from six yards when he headed straight at Cech. Replaced by Balotelli.

Substitutions

  • Carlos Tévez
    19
    50
    2.50

    Carlos Tévez

Came on for Dzeko with just over 20 minutes remaining but was only marginally more effective than Dzeko. Much busier than the Bosnian though, closing down Chelsea's centre-backs.

  • Mario Balotelli
    16
    53
    2.50

    Mario Balotelli

Replaced Aguero with a little over five minutes remaining and only action of note was a yellow card for simulation.
