Player Ratings: West Ham 1-1 Stoke City

Walters' fine finish from a well-worked corner was cancelled out by O'Brien's close-range strike as Sam Allardyce's men endured a frustrating evening at Upton Park

By Chris Davie

  • Jussi Jaaskelainen

    Jussi Jaaskelainen

Was unable to do anything about Walters' opener but made a fine stop from Huth's goalbound header. Had little to deal with after the break.

  • Winston Reid

    2.00

    Winston Reid

Had an awkward style of handling Crouch and could never really get to grips with the Stoke strike, unlike his partner, Tomkins.

  • George McCartney

    2.50

    George McCartney

Allowed Walters to escape from him at the back post which led to Stoke City taking the lead. Attempted to venture forward as the match unfolded and was unlucky not to see Nolan turn in his cross.

  • James Tomkins

    3.00

    James Tomkins

The 23-year-old was dominant in the air against Crouch and handled the Stoke striker with ease. An assured performance from the centre-back.

  • Joey O'Brien

    3.00

    Joey O'Brien

Made a superb last-ditch tackle to prevent a threatening Stoke counter in the first half and somehow found himself in Carroll's centre forward position to bundle home O'Neil's cross.

  • Kevin Nolan

    Kevin Nolan

A quiet first half saw Nolan struggle to build anything behind Carroll and his only shot was well saved by Begovic. The Stoke City goalkeeper denied Nolan again early after the restart as the West Ham midfielder looked destined to meet McCartney's cross.

  • Mark Noble
    1
    1
    2.00

    Mark Noble

This wasn't Noble's best game, as he was often rushed in possession, which inevitably led to mistakes. The midfielder's overall accuracy in his passing was unusually inconsistent. Booked.

  • Mohamed Diame

Mohamed Diame Top of the Match

West Ham's usual trio in midfield struggled to get a foothold in the first half but Diame was the pick of the bunch and looked the most likely to get Allardyce's men moving in the right direction. After the restart, however, it was Diame who was the catalyst for West Ham's equaliser.

  • Gary O'Neil
    0
    1
    2.50

    Gary O'Neil

Looked comfortable on West Ham's right wing, without ever testing Shotton for pace, but provided the cross which allowed O'Brien to equalise.

  • Andy Carroll
    4
    1
    2.00

    Andy Carroll

Dominated in the air during the early exchanges but neither Maiga or O'Neil could provide Carroll with decent service from the flanks. The on-loan forward never seemed to be in the right place and was often beaten to the ball by Shawcross and Huth. Looked frustrated as he walked off the pitch to be replaced by Cole.

  • Modibo Maiga
    1
    2
    1.50

    Modibo Maiga

Making his first start in the Premier League since his arrival from Sochaux, Maiga was a willing runner down West Ham's left flank but looked every bit a striker shoved into a winger's role as his delivery from wide areas was poor.

Substitutions

  • Guy Demel

    Guy Demel

Showed purpose down West Ham's right flank after being brought on but he was often hesitant when taking on Shotton.

  • Matthew Taylor

    Matthew Taylor

Replaced Maiga but had little impact.

  • Carlton Cole

    Carlton Cole

Came for Carroll but had little chance to shine.

  • Asmir Begovic

    3.00

    Asmir Begovic

Made two solid stops to deny Carroll and then Nolan in the first half and denied the West Ham midfielder from tapping home McCartney's shortly after the break. Was finally let down by his defence as O'Brien poached the hosts' equaliser from close range.

  • Geoff Cameron

    2.50

    Geoff Cameron

Had little trouble dealing with the ineffective Maiga on Stoke City's right flank and was able to venture forward as the match progressed.

  • Robert Huth
    0
    0
    2.50

    Robert Huth

Won the majority of his challenges in the air but his distribution from the back was often wayward, which allowed West Ham to regain possession. Poor communication between him and Shawcross was also the culprit for O'Brien's equaliser.

  • Ryan Shawcross
    0
    0
    2.50

    Ryan Shawcross

Had little trouble dealing with a stagnant Carroll but, much like Huth, Shawcross' ability to play the ball from the back looked limited to just the long-ball option.

  • Andy Wilkinson
    1
    0
    2.50

    Andy Wilkinson

Was substituted after 32 minutes through injury but had little problem dealing with O'Neil during his time on the pitch.

  • Glenn Whelan

    0
    3.00

    Glenn Whelan

His low corner eluded West Ham's defence and was met by Walters to hand Stoke City the lead. The 28-year-old was Stoke's most accurate passer in central midfield but was replaced by Palacios after 62 minutes.

  • Steven N'Zonzi
    0
    0
    2.50

    Steven N'Zonzi

Rattled the crossbar with a rasping strike which had Jaaskelainen beaten. Overall, N'Zonzi looked solid in the middle alongside Adam and Whelan but lacked the drive to push Stoke forward.

  • Charlie Adam
    0
    0
    2.50

    Charlie Adam

The Scotland international started the match as a number 10 behind Crouch but dropped deeper as the first half progressed. Adam's passing improved as the game developed and he looked the most likely to make the difference along with Walters.

  • Matthew Etherington
    0
    2
    1.50

Matthew Etherington Flop of the Match

The winger was the subject of boos from his former supporters and didn't enjoy the best of games upon his return to Upton Park as his delivery from the left flank was mostly inaccurate.

  • Jonathan Walters
    0
    0
    3.00

    Jonathan Walters

His superbly arced run and finish from Whelan's corner handed Stoke City the lead. Posed the biggest threat throughout the game for the visitors as he cut in from the right wing on several occasions.

  • Peter Crouch
    1
    0
    2.50

    Peter Crouch

Not the best game to be a lone striker as Crouch was often too isloated to be a significant threat. The 31-year-old also lost most of his aerial battles in the air.

Substitutions

  • Ryan Shotton
    0
    0
    2.50

    Ryan Shotton

Looked comfortable at left-back after coming on for Wilkinson but should have closed down O'Neil's cross quicker for West Ham's equaliser.

  • W. Palacios

    2.50

    W. Palacios

Screened Stoke City's back four after coming on for Whelan and looked assure din the role.

  • Michael Kightly

    Michael Kightly

    Had little chance to influence.
