Player Ratings: Newcastle 0-1 West Ham

Kevin Nolan's goal, on his return to the club he used to captain, proved enough to settle a scrappy game on Tyneside, with Andy Carroll also impressive back at St James' Park.

    Tim Krul

Unable to do anything about Nolan's goal but kept his team-mates guessing with some erratic distribution throughout the game.

  • Davide Santon

    3.00

    Davide Santon

Saw off Benayoun's threat with ease and was given little to worry about by O'Neil. When he got forward, he found O'Brien a dogged opponent and struggled to have his usual influence in attack.

  • Mike Williamson

    3
    2.50

    Mike Williamson

As the taller and more aerially dominant of the defenders, Williamson was tasked with going up against Carroll, and, for the most part, came a distant second. Remained committed though and made a number of vital blocks and interceptions in his own area.

  • Steven Taylor

    2.50

    Steven Taylor

Went up against his former captain Kevin Nolan and tracked the midfielder well for the majority of the game, but crucially lost him as O'Brien's effort pinballed off Nolan and into the goal.

  • Shane Ferguson

    2.00

    Shane Ferguson

Deployed in his favoured left-wing position but lacked the imagination to make things happen. Delivered a couple of probing deliveries when given the room to manoeuvre, but must add to his game as he steps up to the first team.

  • Danny Simpson

    3
    3.00

    Danny Simpson

Did a fine job against Jarvis in the first period and also stood strong against the tricky Maiga after the break. His solidity in defence was commendable but it appeared to come at the cost of very limited attacking.

  • Yohan Cabaye
    3
    3
    3.00

    Yohan Cabaye

Silky as ever in possession and also showed some fine defensive qualities, intercepting several passes. His set-piece delivery was accurate but failed to get forward as often as usual in a two-man central partnership.

  • Hatem Ben Arfa

    2.50

    Hatem Ben Arfa

The Frenchman got past McCartney with ease but his final ball was completely lacking and his influence in central areas was limited. Tested Jaaskelainen with an effort directly from a corner and from distance but has certainly had better afternoons.

  • Jonas Gutierrez

    2.50

    Jonas Gutierrez

Deployed as Cabaye's central-midfield partner and his energy was useful, while he also played one fine ball to release Cisse, but was forced off on 24 with a knee injury.

  • Papiss Cissé

Papiss Cissé Flop of the Match

With chances at a premium, the No.9 drove a lone furrow up front as he looked to create chances for himself, hit one effort from distance well wide and was poor in the Magpies' build-up before being hooked at half-time in favour of Ameobi.

  • Demba Ba
    5
    1
    3.50

    Demba Ba

Operated largely in the gap between midfield and the frontman, looking to use his touch and physicality against Noble, rather than the Hammers' back line. Plucked balls from the air effortlessly and was neat in possession, saw Jaaskelainen plunge on a header in the opening moments of the second half that looked a certain goal.

Substitutions

  • Vurnon Anita

    Vurnon Anita

Replaced the stricken Gutierrez and is not short of physical and technical ability but remains ponderous in possession and appears to still be adjusting to the pace of the English game.

  • Shola Ameobi

    5
    2.50

    Shola Ameobi

Added his brutish physicality to the front line after replacing Cisse at the interval. Gave Tomkins and Reid a fight in the air and saw a header zoom just past the post from a Cabaye corner.

  • Gabriel Obertan

    Gabriel Obertan

Brought on with 20 minutes remaining and the hosts chasing the game, but had very little impact from the right.

  • Jussi Jaaskelainen

Jussi Jaaskelainen Top of the Match

Brick-wall levels of unbeatable. No matter what the Magpies threw at the Finn, he remained unmoved, making particularly stunning stops to deny Ben Arfa and Ba.

  • Winston Reid

    Winston Reid

Strong against Cisse in the first half but was tested further by Ameobi after half-time. Never allowed the striker a glimpse of goal, though.

  • George McCartney

    George McCartney

Struggled against Ben Arfa's pace, and was pegged back throughout the match. Substituted in the second period with what appeared to be a hip complaint.

  • James Tomkins

    3.00

    James Tomkins

Covered well the runs of Ba well from deep but was perhaps fortunate to be given leniency from the referee with a slightly over-physical approach to marking.

  • Joey O'Brien
    5
    0
    3.00

    Joey O'Brien

Committed performance form right-back, shackling the threat of Ferguson well and bombing forward regularly. His mis-hit shot fell kindly to Nolan for the midfielder's goal.

  • Kevin Nolan

    3.50

    Kevin Nolan

Afforded a warm reception by the home fans before the game, but came back to haunt the Toon supporters, turning home O'Brien's scuffed effort while using his experience and nous to link play neatly throughout the afternoon.

  • Matthew Jarvis
    6
    0
    2.00

    Matthew Jarvis

Up against the pacey Danny Simpson on the Hammers' left flank and largely failed to get into the game, hitting his only cross into the stands, before being brought off on 34 minutes, with no obvious signs of injury.

  • Yossi Benayoun
    10
    1
    1.50

    Yossi Benayoun

Neat in possession but lacked the pace to get the better of Santon and struggled to provide anything meaningful as a result, after just six minutes of fruitless action in the second half, the Israeli was hauled off and replaced by Gary O'Neil.

  • Mark Noble
    7
    0
    2.50

    Mark Noble

Sat as the deeper midfielder with Diame bombing forward and recycled possession well without attempting anything too expansive. Was booked for a trip on Ben Arfa, after several niggly fouls on home players.

  • Mohamed Diame
    7
    0
    3.00

    Mohamed Diame

Drove through midfield time and time again with strong purposeful running but often lacked the finesse or composure to make a difference once he reached the final third. Impressed with his defensive duties when required.

  • Andy Carroll
    13
    3
    3.50

    Andy Carroll

Won every header and chased every lost cause. The big striker has rediscovered his touch too, and he regularly brought team-mates into play with intelligent touches. Looks much leaner and fitter, although carried little goal threat due to his excellent work-rate, which often drew him out of advanced positions.

Substitutions

  • Guy Demel

    Guy Demel

Brought on in place of McCartney after the left-back's injury and defended strongly.

  • Gary O'Neil
    2
    4
    2.00

    Gary O'Neil

Replaced Benayoun and drifted infield rather than taking up position on the right wing, giving the Hammers' midfield a lopsided appearance.

  • Modibo Maiga
    4
    2
    2.50

    Modibo Maiga

Played slightly more centrally than Jarvis after replacing the winger in the first half and drew the ire from his manager with a lack of willingness to take on his man, that he failed to remedy throughout his time on the pitch.
