  Could have been quicker off the mark to thwart Cabaye as he stroked the ball home but otherwise a good display from the captain, who finally made the most of Sunderland's series of free kicks to contribute to a late leveler.

  Caught completely out of position for Newcastle's opener and the Spaniard's confidence appeared shot from then onwards. Often failed to even challenge Ba, never mind win the aerial battles.

  Caught out of position in the build-up to Newcastle's opening goal but improved as the game went on, making a fantastic interception on Ba as the Senegalese striker looked to pull the trigger from the edge of the box.

  Knitted play together well from the middle and looked to release McClean and Johnson down the flanks throughout. Had little opportunity to feed either in Fletcher or Sessegnon, however, finally capitalised on a series of free kicks to tee up the Ba own goal.

  Industrious performance from the young midfielder, who was Sunderland's best player throughout the 90 minutes. Proved a thorn in the side for the visitors throughout and one which quickly made Tiote snap in the build-up to the Ivorian's red card.

  A lively display on the right-hand side, yet one that lacked any real impact. Battle well with Santon on the flank and was unlucky to see his effort from an acute angle just fail to bend inside the far post.

  Poor display from the winger, whose form continues to evade him this season. Was loose in the pass throughout, while never getting the better of Simpson at right-back.

  After threatening to look lively in the first half, the attacker was soon drowned out by the Newcastle midfield. Dropped off to link up play with the midfield but too often to little effect. Replaced by Saha with 25 minutes remaining.

  After looking unstoppable in front of goal in recent weeks, the striker was left without service from his creative players. What scraps did make their way to him were easily swept up by Coloccini and Williamson.

  Just the tonic for Newcastle at right-back with a solid display from Simpson after replacing the injured Ferguson in the starting XI. Looked to provide an attacking outlet from deep but, first and foremost, ensured that McClean never got a sniff on the flank.

  Much of the pre-match talk had been of the returning Taylor and Coloccini, yet Williamson kept his place at centre-back and certainly justified Alan Pardew's show of faith. Locked horns with Steven Fletcher several times and never came unstuck.

  The Frenchman may have endured a frustrating start to the new season but was raring to go from the kick-off this afternoon. Was on hand to give Newcastle the lead after five minutes and gave an all-round good performance in the middle of the park, whether creating attacks or breaking up play.

  The Ivorian failed to keep his pre-match promise not to go into the referee's book, with the derby atmosphere getting the midfielder after just 25 minutes when he was awarded a red card for a high challenge on Steven Fletcher. Disappointing, particularly after his promising start to the game.

  Isolated after Ameobi's substitution but battled away well, looking to stretch the Sunderland back line where possible. Had Cuellar in his pocket throughout, particularly when it came to aerial battles. Found his name on the scoresheet in the second half but unfortunately at the wrong end
