Player Ratings: Sunderland 1-1 Newcastle

A late Demba Ba own-goal saw an out-of-sorts home side salvage a late point at the Stadium of Light, with Alan Pardew's 10-men leading for most of the game.

    Simon Mignolet

Parried Ba's effort straight into the path of Cabaye to open the scoring but did well to prevent the Frenchman from doubling his side's lead with a well-struck free kick.

    John O'Shea

Could have been quicker off the mark to thwart Cabaye as he stroked the ball home but otherwise a good display from the captain, who finally made the most of Sunderland's series of free kicks to contribute to a late leveler.

    Carlos Javier Cuéllar

Caught completely out of position for Newcastle's opener and the Spaniard's confidence appeared shot from then onwards. Often failed to even challenge Ba, never mind win the aerial battles.

    Danny Rose

Caught out of position in the build-up to Newcastle's opening goal but improved as the game went on, making a fantastic interception on Ba as the Senegalese striker looked to pull the trigger from the edge of the box.

  • Sebastian Larsson

    Sebastian Larsson

Knitted play together well from the middle and looked to release McClean and Johnson down the flanks throughout. Had little opportunity to feed either in Fletcher or Sessegnon, however, finally capitalised on a series of free kicks to tee up the Ba own goal.

  • Craig Gardner

    Craig Gardner

The former Birmingham man seems wasted at right-back, although his loose passing and touch did little to suggest that he would prove more influential in his natural midfielder position.

  • Jack Colback

    Jack Colback

Industrious performance from the young midfielder, who was Sunderland's best player throughout the 90 minutes. Proved a thorn in the side for the visitors throughout and one which quickly made Tiote snap in the build-up to the Ivorian's red card.

  • Adam Johnson

    Adam Johnson

A lively display on the right-hand side, yet one that lacked any real impact. Battle well with Santon on the flank and was unlucky to see his effort from an acute angle just fail to bend inside the far post.

  • James McClean

    James McClean

Poor display from the winger, whose form continues to evade him this season. Was loose in the pass throughout, while never getting the better of Simpson at right-back.

  • Stéphane Sessegnon

    Stéphane Sessegnon

After threatening to look lively in the first half, the attacker was soon drowned out by the Newcastle midfield. Dropped off to link up play with the midfield but too often to little effect. Replaced by Saha with 25 minutes remaining.

  • Steven Fletcher

    Steven Fletcher

After looking unstoppable in front of goal in recent weeks, the striker was left without service from his creative players. What scraps did make their way to him were easily swept up by Coloccini and Williamson.

    Louis Saha

Quiet against his former club after replacing Sessegnon, although saw a golden opportunity to draw level in the final 10 minutes crash into the side netting.

    Tim Krul

Rarely tested in anger but the Dutchman was often involved in the action as Sunderland peppered his box with crosses from set pieces. Remained calm and measured for the most part, but nearly cost his side after failing to keep hold of a McClean effort.

  • Fabricio Coloccini

Fabricio Coloccini Top of the Match

Classy display from the Newcastle captain upon his return to the side. Looked solid alongside Williamson and provided a cool head in possession throughout.

  • Davide Santon

    Davide Santon

Has at times looked suspect this season but not this afternoon. Stood up well to Johnson from right-back, while also showing a great understanding with Coloccini.

  • Danny Simpson

    Danny Simpson

Just the tonic for Newcastle at right-back with a solid display from Simpson after replacing the injured Ferguson in the starting XI. Looked to provide an attacking outlet from deep but, first and foremost, ensured that McClean never got a sniff on the flank.

  • Mike Williamson
    15

    Mike Williamson

Much of the pre-match talk had been of the returning Taylor and Coloccini, yet Williamson kept his place at centre-back and certainly justified Alan Pardew's show of faith. Locked horns with Steven Fletcher several times and never came unstuck.

  • Yohan Cabaye

    Yohan Cabaye

The Frenchman may have endured a frustrating start to the new season but was raring to go from the kick-off this afternoon. Was on hand to give Newcastle the lead after five minutes and gave an all-round good performance in the middle of the park, whether creating attacks or breaking up play.

  • Hatem Ben Arfa

    Hatem Ben Arfa

May not have made the impact that he so often does but retained possession throughout with a majestic series of twists and turns, while never forgetting the defensive role that he has to play for his side.

  • Jonas Gutierrez

    Jonas Gutierrez

May have lost a yard of pace but has adjusted his game well. His role no longer seems to be to stretch the game but to shore up his side's midfield and provide cover for his full-back - tasks which he performed well.

  • Cheikh Tiote
    5
    7

Cheikh Tiote Flop of the Match

The Ivorian failed to keep his pre-match promise not to go into the referee's book, with the derby atmosphere getting the midfielder after just 25 minutes when he was awarded a red card for a high challenge on Steven Fletcher. Disappointing, particularly after his promising start to the game.

  • Demba Ba
    4
    6
    2.00

    Demba Ba

Isolated after Ameobi's substitution but battled away well, looking to stretch the Sunderland back line where possible. Had Cuellar in his pocket throughout, particularly when it came to aerial battles. Found his name on the scoresheet in the second half but unfortunately at the wrong end

  • Shola Ameobi

    Shola Ameobi

Sacrificed before half-time for James Perch following Cheikh Tiote's sending-off, and will be disappointed not to have had more time to make his usual impact on the Tyne-Wear derby. Looked good in the air during his 40 minutes on the field.

Substitutions

  • James Perch

    James Perch

Introduced before half-time following Tiote's sending-off and did more than enough to ensure that he is included in midfield for his side's next game, against West Brom, with a series of well-timed challenges to break up play.

  • Steven Taylor

    Steven Taylor

Introduced to a chorus of boos in place of Coloccini following his anti-Sunderland comments in midweek but did not react, instead helping the Magpies secure a deserved point.

    Gabriel Obertan

Late cameo for the Frenchman, who helped his side see out a late Sunderland revival.
