Player Ratings: Everton 2-2 Newcastle

The Merseyside outfit twice went ahead but was dragged back by second-half substitute Demba Ba in an enthralling contest at Goodison Park on Monday evening

    Tim Howard

Enjoyed a comfortable first half until Demba Ba's arrival and could do little about the Senegalese striker's excellent finish. Saved well from Ben Arfa in the last five minutes to keep his side in it but could do nothing to stop Ba's second.

  • Tony Hibbert

    Tony Hibbert

Had a comfortable night at right back but was rarely threatened on the outside.

  • Leighton Baines

    Leighton Baines

Put forward a good case for his selection as England's first-choice left back with yet another brilliant performance, capped by a goal. Is there a better crosser of the ball in the Premier League?

  • Phil Jagielka

    Phil Jagielka

Solid at the back and even had a few impressive forays forward, including an incredible half-volley which skimmed the post. Should have done better in stopping Shola Ameobi who provided the assist for the winner.

  • Sylvain Distin

    Sylvain Distin

As cool as ever in defense, but faced a more difficult task in keeping two strikers quiet in the second.

  • Phil Neville

    Phil Neville

Everton's anchor in midfield. Solid in the tackle and kept things simple, though almost gave a goal away with a wayward header in his own box. Was booked in the first half.

  • Leon Osman

    Leon Osman

Impressed in a deeper midfield role, moving the ball intelligently and not lacking bite in the tackle.

  • Steven Pienaar

    4.00

    Steven Pienaar

Continued his brilliant link-up play with Baines and provided the pass for both goals. Everton's biggest threat.

  • Marouane Fellaini

    3.50

    Marouane Fellaini

Displayed all the reasons he has been recently linked with a move to a Champions League club. Dominant aerially and unfortunate to see a goal wrongly chalked off for offside.

  • Nikica Jelavic

    Nikica Jelavic

Saw an early goal ruled out for offside and was subbed not long after due to a knee injury sustained in scrambling the ball in.

  • Kevin Mirallas

    Kevin Mirallas

A real livewire on the right-hand side for the hosts. Troubled Santon constantly and looked dangerous going outside or in.

Substitutions

  • Steven Naismith

    Steven Naismith

Provided little impact as a late sub.

  • Victor Anichebe
    13

    3.50

    Victor Anichebe

A less subtle option than Jelavic, the man he replaced, but worked hard to bully the Newcastle defenders. Unlucky to have a goal disallowed which looked to have crossed the line on replays but made up for it with a brilliant turn and finish at the death.

  • Stephen Harper

    2.50

    Stephen Harper

Could arguably have done better with both goals despite both coming from inside the box. But made an excellent stop to turn Anichebe's header onto the bar late in the game - even though it crossed the line on second viewing.

  • Davide Santon
    6
    5
    2.50

    Davide Santon

Never really looked like he could deal with the brilliant Mirallas and wasn't exactly helped by Hatem Ben Arfa.

  • Mike Williamson
    6
    1
    3.50

    Mike Williamson

Played a large part in keeping his side in touch as Everton dominated the first half with some vital blocks and interceptions.

  • James Perch

    James Perch

Struggled at right back against Pienaar and Baines but brought calm to central midfield when switched with Anita in the second half.

  • Steven Taylor

    2.50

    Steven Taylor

Not as impressive as his center back partner Williamson and was too easily turned by Anichebe late on.

  • Yohan Cabaye

    Yohan Cabaye

Struggled to make an impact in the first half but improved in the second, as evidenced by his well-weighted assist for Ba.

  • Vurnon Anita

    Vurnon Anita

Showed no control in the middle during the first half but improved immeasurably when asked to move to right-back.

  • Hatem Ben Arfa
    10

    2.50

    Hatem Ben Arfa

Looked like Newcastle's biggest threat in the first half when on the ball but showed a criminal lack of defensive discipline to help Santon.

  • Jonas Gutierrez

    Jonas Gutierrez

Had zero impact in an attacking sense but was typically industrious on the flanks.

  • Sylvain Marveaux

Sylvain Marveaux Flop of the Match

Not a night to remember for the Frenchman. Woeful in the first half and dragged off at halftime for Ba.

  • Papiss Cissé

    Papiss Cissé

Never looked threatening as the lone striker but created space for Ba with his intelligent movement in the second period.

    Gael Bigirimana

    A late, time-wasting sub.

  • Demba Ba

Demba Ba Top of the Match

Provided the perfect impact as half-time substitute. Scored just minutes after his introduction to level things up then again at the death to steal a share of the points.

  • Shola Ameobi

    Shola Ameobi

Played a huge part in helping his side to a share of the points, chesting on for Demba Ba to score.
