    Simon Mignolet

Had very little to do, but was a calm presence behind the defence and made an excellent save from a Shorey free kick that was destined for the corner of the net.

  • Danny Rose

    Danny Rose

Zipped up and down the left flank well and showed tremendous pace and a keen eye for a cross in setting up Fletcher's goal. Defended well against McCleary, but was rarely tested. Has clearly become a fans' favourite on Wearside with the home support chanting his name throughout his 68 minutes on the field.

  • John O'Shea

    John O'Shea

A commanding performance from the Black Cats' skipper who used all of his strength and experience to keep Le Fondre out of the game. Shadowed the former Rotherham man throughout and limited his chances to zero.

  • Carlos Javier Cuéllar

    Carlos Javier Cuéllar

Found himself up against the lively Hunt for the most part and looked troubled on occasion, but was able to use his far superior strength to keep the Irishman fairly quiet.

  • Sebastian Larsson

    Sebastian Larsson

Started the game in central midfield and recycled the ball wisely to keep the Black Cats in possession. Burst forward once and saw Federici palm away his fierce effort. Moved to the right in the second half and did well.

  • Craig Gardner

    3.00

    Craig Gardner

Showed his versatility by playing at right-back and in midfield through the game. Stuck to his guns well and moved the ball around the pitch neatly.

  • Jack Colback

    2.50

    Jack Colback

A much more composed performance than he has put in in recent weeks, sat deep in midfield and mopped up play well. Used the ball wisely, feeding more creative colleagues, who were able to do the damage.

  • Adam Johnson

    2.00

    Adam Johnson

Was exciting with the ball at his feet and had far too much pace for Shorey to handle, but was wasteful when in meaningful positions, with his shooting and crossing off target. Subbed at the break after picking up a knock.

  • James McClean

    James McClean

Got the game off to the perfect start for the hosts, powering home on the turn and was bright throughout, regularly beating his man and sending dangerous balls into the area.

  • Stéphane Sessegnon

Stéphane Sessegnon Top of the Match

An electric performance from the Gabon international. Gave Mariappa and Pearce hell throughout, regularly testing Federici with pot-shots. Finally grabbed his goal in the closing stages to cap a fine night for his side and for himself.

  • Steven Fletcher

    3.50

    Steven Fletcher

Kept Mariappa occupied all night long, displaying pace and strength as he returns to full fitness. Doubled the hosts' first-half advantage with a nifty back-heeled finish and brought team-mates into play throughout with some great hold-up play.

Substitutions

  • Phil Bardsley

    Phil Bardsley

Replaced Johnson, forcing a minor tactical reshuffle, but was restricted to a short cameo after being forced off with injury.

  • Titus Bramble

    Titus Bramble

Defended stoutly after replacing Bardsley. Every touch the big defender made was met with raucous cheers from the home support.

  • David Vaughan

    David Vaughan

Brought on after Rose had picked up a knock and sat in midfield, replacing Colback with ease as the youngster moved to full-back.

  • Adam Federici

    0
    2.50

    Adam Federici

Weakly flapped at Johnson's corner and saw McClean fire past him as a result. Redeemed himself slightly with a fine one-on-one save from Larsson, and made several good stops after the break to keep the deficit down.

  • Nicky Shorey

    1.50

    Nicky Shorey

Completely lacking in pace, which Sunderland swiftly spotted and focused attacks down his flank. Was troubled throughout the first half by Johnson, but coped slightly better with the less pacy Larsson.

  • Alex Pearce
    0
    0
    2.00

    Alex Pearce

Tasked with going up against Sessegnon and was far too clunky to stop the Gabon international. Tried to use strong-arm tactics against the PSG man, but that only appeared to make him more determined.

  • Adrian Mariappa
    0
    0
    1.00

Adrian Mariappa Flop of the Match

Unable to get the better of Fletcher throughout the game and lacked the pace or strength required to deal with the Scot. Was sloppy on the ball in his own half, regularly putting his side into unnecessary danger.

  • Shaun Cummings
    0
    0
    1.50

    Shaun Cummings

Couldn't keep hold of McClean for a second as the Irishman drifted around the left flank. Allowed his man the time and space to cross and shoot at will, putting his colleagues at risk several times.

  • Mikele Leigertwood
    0
    0
    2.00

    Mikele Leigertwood

A powerful presence in the middle and did the simple things well, but couldn't contribute anything penetrating and was often left chasing shadows in the middle of the park.

  • Jobi McAnuff
    0
    0
    2.50

    Jobi McAnuff

Reading's only player who appeared to possess any creativity. Took on players willingly and played some fine passes in the attacking third, but none of his team-mates could match his performance and he grew increasingly frustrated as the game went on.

  • Garath McCleary
    0
    0
    1.00

    Garath McCleary

A totally anonymous performance from the former Nottingham Forest winger. No match for Rose on the right flank and was wasteful every time he received the ball. Was deservedly hooked in the second half.

  • Jay Tabb
    0
    0
    1.00

    Jay Tabb

Bustled around midfield, but lacked quality in every facet of his game. His passing was slack and his tackling was tentative, looks out of his depth, even against fellow strugglers.

  • Adam Le Fondre
    0
    0
    1.50

    Adam Le Fondre

Lacked the pace, strength and off-the-ball movement to get the better of the Black Cats' back-line. Had no openings throughout the evening, exactly what he deserved.

  • Noel Hunt
    0
    0
    2.00

    Noel Hunt

Worked hard throughout, but gave away a number of fouls as his side looked to attack. Was deserving of a goal for his work-rate alone and saw Mignolet brilliantly save his late header.

Substitutions

  • Dominic Samuel

    Dominic Samuel

Couldn't have done worse than McCleary, but did little better as he made his Premier League bow.
