No winner could be found between Canada and the United States Sunday night at BMO Field, as the North American rivals drew 0-0.

There was a delayed kickoff due to the Canadian Soccer Association’s centennial celebrations, and it seemed that lethargic start transferred from the pre-game festivities into the game itself, as neither team appeared to get going early.

Indeed the match’s biggest moment came in the 34th minute, as Nik Ledgerwood scored a goal which was eventually disallowed due to an apparent foul earlier in the play, as the referee’s assistant deemed that Edgar Castillo had drawn a knock.

Canada had other chances too, as De Rosario cut in from the left nine minutes in, curling a shot that just deflected past Tim Howard’s left and out for a corner.

In the 23rd minute the ball fell to Tosaint Ricketts in the USA box, but the midfielder’s awkward shot was right at Howard, who saved comfortably from close range.

The first half as a whole was dominated by the United States, which held 67 percent of the ball.

On 15 minutes, Castillo, the last-minute replacement for Fabian Johnson at left fullback, made a spectacular volley attempt from 25 yards out, forcing Lars Hirschfeld to palm over.

Landon Donovan and Clint Dempsey linked up well with a nice one-two as well, but Hirschfeld read the play and intervened to keep the score 0-0.

In the 63rd minute Dempsey took a free kick after he was fouled by Ledgerwood, but the Texan’s effort went narrowly over Hirschfeld’s crossbar.

Five minutes later substitute Simeon Jackson ran from the centre line, attempting to chip Howard, but his over hit shot went just over the goal.

Each team had a late chance, as Jackson narrowly missed from De Rosario cross before Hirschfeld was forced into a fine save right at the death from a header from Clarence Goodson.

Both teams are in action again on Friday in World Cup Qualifying matches, as Canada travels Havana to take on Cuba and the United States hosts Antigua & Barbuda in Tampa, Florida.
