Player Ratings: USA 1-4 Brazil

Despite an improved second half, the United States fell convincingly to Brazil. Goal.com rates the players on show.

By Zac Lee Rigg

  • Tim Howard

    Tim Howard

That's about as well as you can play and still concede four goals. Howard pulled off several trademark grasping saves to keep the U.S. in the match in the first half.

  • Carlos Bocanegra

    Carlos Bocanegra

There's a reason Klinsmann tried desperately to rejuvenate the center back position when he took over. The captain coughed up the ball to prompt breakaways twice, one leading to the opening penalty. Klinsmann can expect more scratchy distribution and sluggishness now that he's reverted to Bob Bradley's favored CB pair.

  • Fabian Johnson

    Fabian Johnson

Timmy Chandler who? Fabian Johnson has established himself as first-choice left back for the U.S. and, after filing a one-time switch, Klinsmann doesn't have to worry about him representing anyone else. Johnson's overlapping runs continually instigated attacks, and he assisted the Americans' only goal.

  • Oguchi Onyewu

Oguchi Onyewu Flop of the Match

On Brazil's fourth goal, Gooch kept Pato onside because he was a yard behind the line. A step behind just about sums up his game. His stray arm gave up the opening penalty and his (lack of) marking let Thiago Silva score from a corner. His days at this level may very well be over.

  • Steven Cherundolo

    Steven Cherundolo

No one looks particularly glamorous trying to mark Neymar. Cherundolo spent the game chasing shadows and stray strands of hair. He also oddly had two huffy incidents with Marcelo.

  • Jermaine Jones
    55
    58
    2.50

    Jermaine Jones

Late in the game, Jones cracked into a trademark late challenge that leveled Neymar. Other referees might have skipped right over the yellow card. The Schalke 04 midfielder collected 14 bookings this season, and by now he's becoming a liability. As opposed to the Scotland game, Jones failed to connect with the attack, and his loose marking helped Thiago Silva wander free to score the winning goal.

  • J. Torres

  • Michael Bradley

    Michael Bradley

By now the only American player who consistently can hang at this level is Bradley. Moved into the holding role he still excelled, at one point running the length of the field to snuff out a Brazil counter after a U.S. corner. The one time he pushed past Edu, he orchestrated the American goal with a delightful through ball. The one blotch on his performance was getting sucked toward the ball to let Marcelo free in the box for Brazil's third.

  • Maurice Edu
    32
    74
    2.00

    Maurice Edu

Edu is a fine destroyer. Push him any further up the field, however, and his clumsy first touch becomes a hindrance. Time and again his inability to trap allowed Brazil to pounce and pressure the American defense.

  • Hérculez Gómez
    157
    16
    3.50

    Hérculez Gómez

So recently a "former" U.S. international, Gomez is staking his claim to be a current starter. He scored a wonderfully scrappy goal, as well as continuing the gritty holdup work he showed against Scotland. His downward header across goal late in the game should have been put away by Dempsey.

  • Landon Donovan
    58
    84
    2.00

    Landon Donovan

From hat trick hero to innocent bystander. Donovan was barely involved in the game, completely snuffed out by Marcelo. His only influence were a handful of free kicks.

Substitutions

    Michael Parkhurst

A late sub for the worn-out Cherundolo.

  • E. Castillo

    E. Castillo

    Came on for Johnson.

  • Kyle Beckerman

    Kyle Beckerman

Helped Bradley push forward a bit more when he replaced Jones.

  • Terrence Boyd

    Terrence Boyd

Was kept off the scoreboard by a fantastic save from the legs of Rafael.

  • Clint Dempsey
    74
    33

    Clint Dempsey

One wonders what a fit Dempsey might have added to this game, especially with the American finishing so wayward.

  • Rafael
    86
    4
    4.00

    Rafael

Rafael offers Brazil an almost unfair luxury - enviable depth in goal. His double save on Gomez and Boyd and then the palmed block on Bradley's header prevented any sniff of a comeback.

  • Danilo
    44
    6
    3.50

    Danilo

Danilo romped forward, prompting plenty of attacks for Brazil in the first half. His influence waned as the game progressed, but the U.S. still struggled to create anything down his flank after its goal.

  • Juan
    36
    15
    2.50

    Juan

There were two key clues this isn't the Juan (Roma) who normally starts in Brazil's defense: 1. The Internazionale version is huge. 2. This Juan lost Gomez's run for the American's goal.

  • Marcelo
    159
    30
    4.00

    Marcelo Top of the Match

The Real Madrid fullback is nearly as good at winding up opponents as he is at playing soccer. Marcelo kicked the ball into the side of the prone Cherundolo to collect a yellow he could have earned earlier for a dangerous high cleat. He also scored the third goal to cap off a surging run and assisted Brazil's fourth. That's all without mentioning how he turned the left corridor into a dead zone for U.S. attacks.

  • Thiago Silva
    73
    5
    3.50

    Thiago Silva

The AC Milan man has quietly turned into a significant leader. He held together a green defense and even scored the game's winning goal for good measure.

  • Oscar
    47
    5
    3.50

    Oscar

He's perhaps not as silky as Ganso, but Oscar's efficient, probing distribution kept the Brazil attack ticking. His sublime lofted ball over the defense for Leandro Damiao should have resulted in a goal. Picked up a yellow for stepping on Johnson's heels.

  • Rômulo
    33
    6
    3.50

    Rômulo

When the U.S. finally beat Rafael, a Gomez header stranding the goalkeeper, Romulo stuck a cleat in the way of Dempsey's sure-fire goal. His movement in midfield helped Brazil apply high defensive pressure that the U.S. struggled to break.

  • Sandro
    43
    8
    3.50

    Sandro

The Tottenham man looked adorable in his blue head bandage after leaving the field bloodied, but there was nothing cute about his play. Sandro enforced a tough midfield line that refused to let the Americans hold possession.

  • Hulk
    65
    12
    2.50

    Hulk

In the opening stages, Hulk's powerful direct runs and flicks threatened to shred the U.S. backline. In the end, a lack finishing undid his attempts.

  • Leandro Damião
    31
    11
    2.50

    Leandro Damião

His shot led to the penalty which opened the scoring. Aside from that, the young striker also squandered a handful of chances to finish until Pato replaced him and showed a more clinical edge.

  • Neymar
    120
    16
    3.50

    Neymar

Between his David Bowie hair and effortless slinking runs, this guy feels like he's from outer space. Even on a relatively "quiet" night, Neymar still scored the opener and assisted two more.

Substitutions

    Alex Sandro

  • Casemiro

  • Lucas

    Lucas

He got nearly 10 minutes to rest Neymar but didn't show the same superstar credentials.

  • Giuliano

    Giuliano

Came on in the 89th for Oscar.

  • Alexandre Pato
    92

    Alexandre Pato

In a 25-minute cameo, Pato tipped one cross into the upright and rifled a one-time volley past Howard from a tight angle. Feed the Duck and he will score, or something like that.
