Live Commentary

  • We're already looking forward to that one, make sure you join us for it! Thanks for tuning in this evening, goodnight!
  • FULL-TIME!! Chelsea are through! A Lampard penalty and a late Meireles goal, as well as a red card for the visitors, help the hosts see off their Portuguese opponents. However it wasn't easy, Garcia, the man who gave away the penalty, headed home to equalise giving the Premier League side a late scare. But it was the midfielder from Portugal who won it for Di Matteo's men, setting up a semi-final with Barcelona!
  • 90' + 3'
Mikel headed Aimar's free-kick out, the ball fell to Meireles who ran the length of the pitch and lashed the ball past Artur. A fine goal to send the Blues into the semis.
  • 90' + 2'
    Assist John Obi Mikel
  • 90' + 2'
    Goal Raúl Meireles
  • 90' + 2'
GGGGOOOOAAAAALLLL! Game over, Raul Meireles smashes the ball into the back of the net in another lightning counter.
  • 90'
Benfica are throwing the kitchen sink at Chelsea, but none of their several balls into the box lead to anything. However Didier Drogba is penalised for handball and the Eagles have a dangerous free-kick.
  • 88'
    SubstitutionFernando Torres Didier Drogba
  • 88'
Oliveira tries an audacious shot with the outside of his boot, however he doesn't get quite enough swerve on it to trouble Cech.
  • 86'
Cech didn't do enough from that corner, he was static and let Garcia get in front of him. Shame really, the big man has had a very good game tonight other than that.
  • 85'
    Assist Pablo Aimar
  • 85'
    Goal Javi García
GOOOAAALL!! Garcia gets in front of Cech to head in from a corner, just after the Blues' keeper made a great save to force the set-piece.
  • 81'
Under ten minutes to go at Stamford Bridge and you can't see the visitors getting back into this one, however we'll have to wait and see.
  • 79'
    SubstitutionJuan Mata Raúl Meireles
  • 79'
    Yellow Card John Obi Mikel
  • 79'
Aimar's shot goes straight into the keeper's hands.
  • 78'
Cynical trip from Mikel after Rodrigo tip-toes his way towards the Chelsea box. Benfica will have a free-kick in a good position.
  • 76'
Aimar is still pulling the strings in midfield, he finds Nelson Oliveira but the substitute's shot is well wide.
  • 74'
If Chelsea don't get a second I'll eat my hat. Kalou this time just misses the post after a snap-shot on the turn. Then, Benfica go straight down the other end and force Cech into a smart save with his feet.
  • 73'
Djalo leaps above the Blues centre-back pairing to win a header in the box but he can't find the target. Good chance, that.
  • 72'
    SubstitutionBruno César Rodrigo
  • 70'
SO CLOSE FROM MATA! The game is suddenly lit up with a lightning attack from Chelsea. Kalou slots the Spaniard through on the left, he then lashes it across goal but misses the far post by a whisker.
  • 67'
Wayne Veysey, our man at Stamford Bridge, reports: "It suits Chelsea down to the ground but this game appears to have now lost its competitive edge. The home side are coasting and in complete control. Benfica appear to have thrown in the towel. Oscar Cardozo and Gaitan, their two most influential attackers, have been withdrawn, presumably with one eye on the club's title challenge."
  • 64'
A poor header from Ivanovic allows Benfica in, but Yannick dos Santos Djalo misses the target.
  • 62'
Kalou hits the bar! However it was from a miss-hit cross which strikes the back-side of the frame.
  • 61'
    SubstitutionN. Gaitán Yannick Djaló
  • 60'
    SubstitutionJohn Terry Gary Cahill
  • 57'
    SubstitutionÓ. Cardozo Nélson Oliveira
  • 56'
Chelsea are pushing for a second here! Mata and Torres pull-off a superb one-two inside the Benfica box. The midfielder forces a good stop from Artur, the re-bound goes in the former Liverpool man's direction but he can't direct it on target, despite his athletic attempt.
  • 55'
Ball in from the left for the Blues but Kalou misses the target by miles, well not quite, with his header.
  • 53'
Torres goes close! It's a fine turn from the Spanish striker, who then hits it with his left. However the defender gets a vital touch and it goes out for a corner.
  • 52'
Ambitious effort from the half-way line from Cardozo, who spots Cech off his line, but it's over the bar.
  • 49'
HOW HAVE CHELSEA NOT SCORED!? Kalou was played in down the left-flank of the box, he slips it across the goal-line, beating Artur, but somehow Ramires misses the ball from no more than a yard out!
  • 48'
FANTASTIC SAVE FROM CECH!! More beautiful football from the visitors, Aimar links up well with Gaitan before the latter forces the Chelsea keeper into tipping it away from the top corner.
  • 46'
Kalou forces an early corner after his shot from outside of the box is deflected out, Terry heads over from the set-piece.
  • 45'
    Benfica get us back underway.
  • Here's our man Wayne Veysey at the Bridge: "Generous applause form the Chelsea fans at the three-quarter stage of this tie. A Frank Lampard penalty, and the dismissal of Benfica skipper Maxi Pereira, has given the home team some breathing space in this tie. In truth, Chelsea have not had to do much to place one-and-a-half legs (bear with me) in the semi-finals. Benfica have been undermined by their own stupidity, and a severe lack of cutting edge from their 'big three' of Cardozo, Aimar and Gaitan."
  • HALF-TIME!!! Lampard's penalty, after Cole's surge, is the difference at the break at Stamford Bridge. The visitors have also had Pereira sent-off, leaving Chelsea with a great opportunity to get to the semis. Don't go anywhere!
  • 45' + 2'
Aimar whips it in but Ivanovic heads away.
  • 45' + 1'
Kalou brings down Aimar, who is proving to be a bit of a handful, Benfica have another free-kick in a good area...
  • 45'
Kalou slips a wonderful into Torres the Spanish forward could shoot or play it across to a team-mate, however, he does half of one and half of the other and fluffs the chance.
  • 44'
    Yellow Card Ramires
  • 43'
Ramires plays the ball across the face but it just has too much on it for Kalou to get on the end of. The Ivorian then plays it back in but it's a poor ball.
  • 41'
Mata sends a terrific volley just over, after some great vision from Mikel. However the linesman's flag is again raised.
  • 40'
    Yellow/Red Maxi Pereira
RED CARD FOR BENFICA!! Maxi Pereira picks up his second booking for a wild lunge on Mikel, things are going from bad to worse for the Eagles.
  • 38'

  • 36'
Mikel heads behind for a corner at the back post after a testing ball from the left. Aimar causing more trouble for the visitors.
  • 34'
Aimar, Cardozo and Cesar are linking up brilliantly in attack for Benfica, however on this occasion they try one too many first-time passes and loose control on the edge of the Chelsea box.
  • 32'
Aimar hits one from range but it's straight into the arms of Cech.
  • 31'
Wayne Veysey is our correspondent at the ground tonight, he reports: "Those in the Matthew Harding lower stand behind the goal to the right of the press box have been on their feet since the first whistle, so they did not need to rise to acclaim Frank Lampard's drilled penalty that doubled Chelsea's aggregate advantage. Nevertheless, there is a feeling of considerable relief here following Chelsea's nervous start. It is a long way, though, from the passion and against-the-odds partisanship that coursed through this stadium three weeks ago for the Napoli triumph."
  • 30'
OFF THE LINE FROM TERRY! The ball is clipped into the area and then flicked on, it's then cushioned down for Cardozo to strike but the England defender is perfectly placed to block the shot.
  • 29'
Free-kick to the visitors in a good position after John Obi Mikel catches Aimar...
  • 28'
Luiz loses the ball after trying to round two Benfica players just outside his own box, the Brazilian is saved by a tackle from Terry.
  • 27'
    Yellow Card Pablo Aimar
  • 26'
Torres is played in behind straight from Petr Cech's goal-kick, however the Spaniard can't find a team-mate in the box.
  • 25'
Oscar Cardozo smashes a quick-fire effort towards goal on the turn, but it flies over.
  • 23'
That booking sees Cesar miss the semi-final, should the Eagles overturn this deficit.
  • 22'
So, the Blues now lead 2-0 on aggregate and they look good value to progress. However Benfica have enjoyed some decent early play, they'll be hoping they can turn that into a goal before the break.

  • 15'
More prolonged possession for the Eagles but another headed clearance kills the attack. The game just lacking cutting edge at the moment.
  • 13'
The Portuguese come forward once more but the hosts' defence holds firm and doesn't allow them an easy way in.
  • 11'
CHELSEA HAVE A GOAL DISALLOWED! Juan Mata is released down the left-flank and slots it past Artur into the back of the net, however the linesman raises his flag.
  • 10'
The visitors come forward on the counter, Bruno Cesar hits in but Luiz gets a block in and the the Chelsea back-four clear the danger.

Our man in west London Wayne Veysey reports: "He picks and chooses his games these days, but when the Champions League anthem pipes around the Bridge, he can usually be spotted in his box. I refer, of course, to Roman Abramovich, the Chelsea owner who is protected from the west London chill tonight by the type of parka jacket that might be worn on a weekend of orienteering in the New Forest."
  • 4'
Terry slides in to make a good block from Pablo Aimar's shot, the hosts are stretched just now.

  • Chelsea have David Luiz, Ashley Cole and Raul Meireles one yellow away from missing the semi-finals.
  • No English side has ever failed to progress from Europe after winning the first-leg away from home.
  • Let's have some fact facts while we wait for kick-off...
  • Our man at the Bridge tonight is Wayne Veysey, and he reports: "There was a buzz here when the Chelsea players pulled up outside the stadium on the team coach and waved at the gathered fans before trotting inside. Frank Lampard was smiling as he disembarked and now we know why. He starts tonight in place of Raul Meireles after being a substitute in the first leg. The one other change is Branislav Ivanovic, who was out injured in the first leg, for Paulo Ferreira at right-back. We are expecting Chelsea to line up in the same 4-2-3-1 formation they used in Lisbon, with Daniel Sturridge, Juan Mata and Salomon Kalou supporting Fernando Torres. A penny for the thoughts of Michael Essien and Didier Drogba, untouchables no longer?"
  • Chelsea starting line-up: Cech; Ivanovic, Luiz, Terry, Cole; Mikel, Lampard; Ramires, Mata, Kalou; Torres. Subs: Turnbull, Ferreira, Cahill, Essien, Meireles, Sturridge, Drogba. Benfica starting line-up: Artur; Pereira, Garcia, Emerson, Capdevila; Gaitan, Matic, Witsel, Cesar; Aimar; Cardozo Subs: Eduardo, Almeida, Nolito, Djalo, Oliveira, Rodrigo, Saviola
