Player Ratings: Germany 1-2 France

Laurent Blanc's men extended their unbeaten streak to 18 matches in total, overcoming an injury-hit Germany side in Bremen thanks to goals from Olivier Giroud and Florent Malouda.

    Tim Wiese

Produced a terrific save in the first half to deny Cabaye and was left badly exposed on Giroud’s goal, despite the fact that the ball went through his legs. Left brutally open for the second, too, but otherwise performed solidly.

  • Dennis Aogo

Dennis Aogo Flop of the Match

Certainly failed to cover himself in glory on the game’s opening goal as he rather abandoned his post, leaving a gaping void for the French to exploit. When Les Bleus attacked, they tended to do so most effectively down his channel, which tells its own story.

  • Holger Badstuber

    Holger Badstuber

Played only the first half of the match before being replaced. Didn’t have an especially remarkable game, though he was unfortunate to concede a free kick for handball at the edge of the box that France couldn’t benefit from. Also went close with a header.

  • Jerome Boateng

    Jerome Boateng

Up against the threat of Ribery, the Bayern Munich man generally coped well with the threat of his clubmate. Was beaten occasionally, but this was never decisive. On the other hand, he was poor on the ball. Booked for a foul on Menez.

  • Mats Hummels

    Mats Hummels

Involved in one piece of miscommunication with Wiese early on, which saw the goalkeeper clear against the defender. A sloppy pass after the break presented the ball to Valbuena, but he tidied up his own mess expertly. Despite these noteworthy errors, he bossed his penalty box well, particularly in the first half.

  • Mesut Özil

    Mesut Özil

An incredibly classy individual, the Real Madrid playmaker retained possession excellently throughout, and much of his build-up play around the box was slick and imaginative. Faded a little after the break.

  • Sami Khedira

    Sami Khedira

The Real Madrid man covered a good deal of ground in this clash and took up some dangerous offensive positions, but it was his job to police the threat of Nasri, and in this role he could have been more effective.

  • Toni Kroos

    Toni Kroos

Showed a number of moments of technical excellence throughout this clash, perhaps the most telling of which was a back-post cross that Badstuber nearly headed home.

  • Andre Schürrle

    Andre Schürrle

Left the field with a bloodied head after an unfortunate collision with Debuchy’s elbow, the offensive Bayer Leverkusen midfielder had previously probed dangerously without any luck.

  • Miroslav Klose

    Miroslav Klose

Continues to be a vital cog for the Germans. His link-up play was excellent but he fluffed a couple of chances and was denied by Lloris when one-on-one. Withdrawn at the break.

  • Marco Reus

    Marco Reus

Offered a threat down the channel with his pace, getting in behind the French defense from the outset. His willingness to run directly at the heart of the defense caused the visitors no end of problems, but he was not alert enough to prevent the marauding Debuchy claiming an assist on France’s second goal, typifying a second half in which he and his side faded.

    Benedikt Höwedes

Came on sporting a face mask at half-time but was part of a defense that had rather disintegrated. Made a couple of telling heading clearances, but the rearguard was unimpressive as a whole after his arrival.

  • Lars Bender

    Lars Bender

Given the last 20 minutes but failed to make an impression.

  • Thomas Müller

    Thomas Müller

Came on for the injured Schurrle and delivered some dangerous crosses into the box. One narrowly missed the far post having just needed a touch from Gomez to find the net, while a second create Cacau’s goal.

  • Mario Gomez

    Mario Gomez

Replaced Klose at the interval. Nearly turned in one cross from Muller and was a threat in the penalty area.

  • Cacau

    Cacau

Replaced Reus with 20 minutes remaining. At times seemed more a hindrance than a help, but got his name on the scoresheet late on.

  • Hugo Lloris

    Hugo Lloris

Officially France’s captain for the first time, the Lyon goalkeeper started a little tentatively but produced some of his best play before the interval as he denied Klose in a one-on-one situation and them thwarted a close-range Badstuber header. Denied a deserved clean sheet late on.

  • Adil Rami

    Adil Rami

Has looked increasingly mature in the France defense under Blanc, but there remains some naivety in that his judgement is often flawed, missing the occasional high ball. Grew into the game.

  • Éric Abidal

    Éric Abidal

Had a very difficult first half as he failed to keep pace with the sprightly Reus time and again. The Barcelona man was France’s weak point in the defense. In the second period, he was able to use his experience well to limit the damage down his channel.

  • Mathieu Debuchy

Mathieu Debuchy Top of the Match

Included ahead of Lyon’s Anthony Reveilllere, he justified his inclusion in the first half by going on a trademark run down the right channel and picking out Giroud to score. Was strong down his flank defensively and produced another energetic run to carve out France’s second goal.

  • Philippe Mexes

    Philippe Mexes

Made a somewhat nervy start to the match and took few chances when the ball was played in behind him, conceding a needless corner that was ultimately cleared. Covered in well for Rami, though, and was not afraid to put in a thumping challenge.

  • Franck Ribéry

    Franck Ribéry

The only member of the French squad based in Germany, it shouldn’t have been too much of a surprise he took a kick in the early stages. Produced another ineffective performance for the national side and was withdrawn at the break.

  • Mathieu Valbuena

    Mathieu Valbuena

Would no doubt have liked to have been a more central figure in France’s attacking play, but he produced a moment of quality that was ultimately the catalyst to the opening goal as he slid a wonderful pass to Debuchy. Busy before being replaced.

  • Samir Nasri

    Samir Nasri

Sometimes can cut a subdued figure for the national team, but positioned in a central position he offered a good deal, retaining position well and playing a number of dangerous probing passes. Might have released the ball quicker at times.

  • Yohan Cabaye

    Yohan Cabaye

The Newcastle man’s most telling contribution was a firm downward header from a corner kick that brought a good save from Weise. In terms of his defensive game, he struggled with the pace of the German players, making tracking runs an arduous task. Taken off in the second half.

  • Yann M'Vila

    Yann M'Vila

Combative and competitive, the Rennes man was typically industrious in the heart of the field for Laurent Blanc’s side. When in possession, he was often forced backwards, and on one occasion coughed the ball up too easily to Gomez but made amends with a terrific covering challenge. Withdrawn soon afterwards.

  • Olivier Giroud

    Olivier Giroud

Ligue 1’s top scorer marked his first start for the national team with a slick finish midway through the first half, perhaps booking his place in the squad for Euro 2012. Did miss a good headed chance after the break, but worked hard for the team and linked well with those around him.

    Jérémy Menez

The PSG man came on for Ribery at half-time but offered little more than the player he replaced. One strong second-half run might have ended fruitfully, but his pass to Valbuena was much too heavy.
