The Seattle Sounders did their Cascadia rivals a major favor Sunday night, as their 3-1 home win over FC Dallas clinched a playoff berth for the Vancouver Whitecaps, and eliminated FCD in the process.
Seattle scored the game's first goal after good work from Fredy Montero forced Hernan Pertuz to bring him down in the box. Brad Evans stepped up and scored on the resulting penalty kick.
The lead would last until the 40th minute, when questionable set-piece defending from the home side presented a nearly unmissable chance for Blas Perez, who obliged by slamming home the equalizer.
After a bout of sustained pressure, the Sounders took the lead after a quick free kick caught Dallas asleep down the left flank. Christian Tiffert found a streaking Evans in the box, and the midfielder made no mistake, scoring his second on the night.
The Sounders made the points secure 10 minutes from time. Eddie Johnson slipped Montero in behind the defense, and the Colombian found a wide open Mauro Rosales for an easy tap-in, with the FC Dallas defense merely spectators.
