Houston Dynamo 3-1 Philadelphia Union: Convincing win gives Houston playoff spot
A 3-1 win over a lackluster Philadelphia side gives the Houston Dynamo another shot at the MLS playoffs after losing in last year's final.
By Keith Hickey
Bob Levey
The Houston Dynamo picked up two unanswered second half goals to see off the Philadelphia Union and secure a spot in the 2012 MLS playoffs.
Mac Kandji opened the scoring early for Houston, winning a challenge away from Carlos Valdes and finishing coolly past Zac MacMath in the fifth minute.
Jack McInerney leveled for Philadelphia in the 19th minute, out-jumping two defenders to nod Sheanon Williams' cross into the far corner. It was the 20-year-old's eighth goal of the season, and a team-record fourth consecutive game with a goal.
Oscar Boniek Garcia returned Houston's lead in the second half, driving in a shot from outside the area. MacMath got a hand to the shot, but could only parry it into his own net.
Brad Davis sealed the result a few minutes later, converting his 75th minute penalty after Carlos Valdes was judged to have hauled down Will Bruin in the box.
The victory for Houston, combined with the Crew losing to D.C. United, means the Dynamo will return to the postseason after losing last season's MLS Cup final to Los Angeles.
