The Portland Timbers moved their way up the Western Conference with a 1-0 win over the Colorado Rapids on Friday night.
The battle to avoid last in the Western Conference motivated these two teams into playing an exciting match in front of the 31st consecutive sellout crowd at Jeld-Wen Field.
The action covered the entire pitch, and kept both Donovan Ricketts and Matt Pickens occupied making saves. The play continued to get aggressive, resulting in Steven Smith receiving the first yellow card of the night for fouling Brian Mullan.
Once the halftime clock began to run down, the Rapids appeared indifferent, ready for their locker room. The Timbers, however, continued to play strongly. Sal Zizzo crossed the ball into the path of forward Bright Dike. The 25-year-old scored his second goal of the season, giving the Timbers the 1-0 win.
The Rapids struggled to finish any of the chances they were given in the second half, and Portland enjoyed their first win over the Rapids, along with three points to jump over Colorado at the bottom of the Western Conference.
