Goals from Alvaro Fernandez and Chris Rolfe in the first half were enough to seal an away victory.

The Chicago Fire moved into second place in the Eastern Conference with a 2-1 win at Toronto FC. The home side was eliminated from playoff contention with the result.

Lackluster Toronto defending helped the Fire score the game's opening goal early on. A giveaway led to a chance for Pavel Pardo, who hit the post from close range. The Mexican pounced on the rebound though, and crossed to Alvaro Fernandez, who headed home his first goal for the Fire.

Chicago doubled its lead just before halftime. A corner kick was only partially cleared, and Chris Rolfe latched onto a header, volleying low and across his body through traffic in the box. The ball may have caught a slight deflection, which gave Milos Kocic little chance in the TFC goal.

Just over 10 minutes from time, Toronto FC was handed a lifeline when Luis Silva's clever backheel found Eric Hassli unmarked on the back post, and the Frenchman sidefooted low into the far corner past the diving Sean Johnson.

Johnson managed to make the lead stand up, however, as he helped his side see out the result in the last 10 minutes.
