Philadelphia Union 0-1 D.C. United: Pontius hits winner

A goal from Chris Pontius was the only difference in the match as the Union fell in John Hackworth's first game in charge.

In their first contest since sacking manager Peter Nowak on Wednesday, the Philadelphia Union suffered a 1-0 loss at the hands of D.C. United on Saturday evening.

Interim head coach John Hackworth presided over a Union squad that looked much more comfortable with the ball than they did at any point this season under Nowak, but the perfectly placed right foot of United’s Chris Pontius kept Philadelphia from getting the result it craved.

Though the Union struggled to capitalize on the many chances they created, United made the most of one of its few opportunities. After a bad foul in the 78thminute by Philadelphia defender Carlos Valdes, United’s Branko Boskovic laced the ensuing free kick at the back post, where Pontius redirected it into the net.

Valdes had a chance for redemption late, but his would-be equalizer off of a Michael Farfan corner kick was nabbed at the goal line for Hamid’s fifth and final save of the night.
