The Portland Timbers earned an important victory Sunday night, defeating the visiting Chicago Fire 2-1 on the strength of goals from Eric Brunner and an own goal from Chicago's Logan Pause.
The home side opened the scoring in the 20th minute when Brunner got on the end of a corner-kick scramble and volleyed home from close range.
Jalil Anibaba leveled the match in the 39th minute, after latching onto a shot from Marco Pappa. The second-year man was able to turn and fire home from close range.
The Timbers scored the winner off a corner kick a few minutes into the second half. Boyd flicked on a corner kick into the path of Pause, who could do no more than deflect the ball into his own net from close range.
With the win, Portland moved out of last place of the Western Conference and surprisingly, the team that took its place is none other than the defending champion, the Los Angeles Galaxy.
