San Jose Earthquakes 5-3 D.C. United: 'Quakes take thriller

San Jose strikers Wondolowski and Lenhart each scored a double to lead their side past the capital club.

The San Jose Earthquakes asserted a touch of Western dominance, staying first in their conference with a 5-3 win over D.C. United, second in the East.

Dwayne De Rosario opened the scoring against his old club. Danny Cruz won the ball deep in midfield and buzzed forward. When he lost control near the top of the box, DeRo strutted forward and one-timed a shot into the top corner.

That was the eighth minute. In the 19th, San Jose equalized, Steven Lenhart smashing a low drive past Joe Willis from the top of the box after a blocked shot deflected to him. In the 21st, the Earthquakes took the lead. Who else? Chris Wondolowski exploited haphazard defending for his ninth of the season.

Justin Morrow's scrappy deflected volley from a corner ended the scoring for the first half. The goals had by no means dried up, though.

Daniel Woolard headed home a cross from Andy Najar, who was playing right back, to pull D.C. within a goal. But the Earthquakes pulled clear once more, Wondo scoring his league-leading 10th of the year.

Minutes later Lenhart added his second of the night by chesting the ball back into the goal after Marvin Chavez's shot caromed off the bar.

D.C. DP Hamdi Salihi scored his first of the season as a consolation in the 88th minute.
