Real Sociedad 0-4 Atletico Madrid: Falcao hat trick and Adrian strike ensure Diego Simeone's impressive start continues

Los Colchoneros continued their fine form as another clean sheet accompanied a clinical win over one of La Liga's in-form sides

By Charlie Scott

Atletico Madrid provided an outstanding attacking performance to secure a 4-0 win against Real Sociedad in the two side's La Liga clash at Estadio Municipal de Anoeta this evening.

Explosive openings to each half from Atletico resulted in goals for Radamel Falcao and Adrian, while the Colombian striker completed his hat trick in the second period with a wonderful lob and poacher's finish late on.

The game started at a frantic pace and shortly after having an Arda Turan shot saved by Claudio Bravo, Atletico was awarded a penalty for a handball from la Real center back Vadim Demidov. Falcao gave the away side the perfect start from the resulting spot kick by calmly dispatching the ball low past Bravo.

The game continued at a frenetic speed, with both sides creating chances and providing plenty of industry down the wings, with Real Sociedad doing well to come back into game after being knocked off balance by the early penalty converted by Falcao.

Atletico should have added a second midway through the half when young forward Adrian Lopez completely missed the ball at the back post after Falcao had done well to flick the ball onto him.

Antoine Griezmann was the home side's most impressive player, but sadly much of his decent work out on the wings went to waste as Agirretxe's movement in the penalty area failed to match the youngster's impressive build-up play.

The locals then had a shout for a penalty of their own turned down by César Muñiz Fernández‎ after a follow up shot from Gorka Elustondo's free kick on the edge of the area appeared to strike the outstretched arm of Diego Godin.

There was a sense of deja vu for the home side as the second half got underway as it was again made to pay for a sloppy start. In the first half it had taken Atletico 70 seconds to be awarded a penalty, but in the second half it went one better, or six seconds better to be precise, as Adrian tapped in his side's second goal of the night.

Atletico's right back Juanfran was superb in the build-up to the second goal, neatly exchanging passes with Falcao on the edge of the penalty area before lofting a cross for Adrian to pounce on at the back post.

After being so influential in creating Atletico's second goal Juanfran then became the villain as he received a yellow card for a cynical tackle. Elustondo then struck the resulting free kick inches wide for the home side.

As the game threatened to grind to a standstill late on Falcao added gloss to Atletico's victory with an outrageous lob from outside the area. He then added a confident finish from inside the six yard box to complete an impressive rout.

Real Sociedad had the better of the possession throughout the game but failed to create the chances needed to make its control count as Atletico secured a win that lifts it into the top half, while Sociedad remains in 14th position in La Liga.
