Maybe not the scoreline some would have hoped for, but it's a win for the U.S., and that's a big step on the way to the Hex. A great first half display yielded no goals, but a second half with just one in it and a slightly less eye-catching showing was still enough on the night.
AND THERE IT IS!! The USA takes a 1-0 win over Jamaica. Maybe a bit of retribution from Friday, but more importantly it's three vital points for the USA. Now three teams tied in the group.
Crowd is waiting to explode at the final whistle. They've been great tonight, but it's not over yet. Jones gives away a free kick, it'll be from deep but always a danger.
Howard will take his time with a goal kick. Ref warns him, but that won't matter. Just minutes left.
Three minutes added on.
Then again, maybe not. Ball played short form the corner, Altidore losses it, but the USA takes it back. This game is almost done with regulation. Would imagine a good bit of stoppage time though.
Nice turn from Shea. Well done to win a corner. Maybe a chance for a late clincher here.
After Williams forces a clearance from Jamaica, Cherundolo tries to find Dempsey with a long cross. It's over hit and the USA is back to defending for the moment.
Williams did really well to win a throw there. Nice job. USA trying to kill this one off at this point.
On the second time of asking Dempsey clears the danger with his head.
Johnson working down the left, send the cross in, Bocanegra gets it out for a corner, and Howard has to punch the corner out for another.
Jones stops Richards on the right but Jamaica holds onto the ball, moves it back around tries to slip Richards back in behind.
Substitution Hérculez Gómez Jozy Altidore
Stinging shot, missed who hit it for Jamaica, but forced a nice save out of Howard.
Dempsey gets the corner clear, and Gomez is replaced by Altidore for the run to the finish.
A better move out of the USA. Johnson can't get on the end of it in the box and Jamaica is back on the ball, rushing forward. Cameron asked to defend another counter.
Another foul, they're flying in now. USA needs to settle this down, and it looks like Jozy Altidore will come on shortly to try and help that.
Substitution Omar Cummings Dane Richards
Good hit from Jamaica sails high of the mark. USA doing much more defending in this second half. Dempsey wins another foul on the other end.
Substitution Jevaughn Watson Tremaine Stewart
Edu's first touch of the night is not a good one. USA had something building too, but he's in to defend and he did that well to win it back.
Substitution Graham Zusi Maurice Edu
Dangerous moments for the USA. Now Zusi will come off and Maurice Edu will slide on to try and stem this push from the visiting side.
Cherundolo with some good defending on the back post to keep Johnson out, and then Dempsey heads the corner clear.
Zusi takes a knock. Back up and moving, free kick for the USA.
Substitution J. Torres Brek Shea
Substitution Luton Shelton Kavin Bryan
Changes coming in now. Shelton is out, Bryan is in. For the USA, Torres is out, Shea slides in on the left.
Deep throw for Jamaica, Cameron and Cherundolo get it clear.
Ryan Johnson flagged for offside. Looked like a dangerous ball. Jamaica gave up the goal and is now looking hard to get it back, not sitting deep anymore.
Yellow Card Graham Zusi
Zusi picks up a card. A cheap card. Just a reach out and grab.
Torres tries to break forward, looses the ball and runs up his man's back trying to win it back.
USA is now giving more of the ball to Jamaica. That's a dangerous tactic, and we learned on Friday night.
Cameron has been strong again tonight.
The USA finally gets its goal. It's been a long time coming tonight, and they're right back on the attack with Jones trying to save it, but loosing out for a goal kick.
Goal Hérculez Gómez
GOAL!!!!! GOMEZ, What a hit!!! From the free kick he bends it home. Well done.
Dempsey now draws a foul. Good look at goal from that spot.
Dempsey is dropping deeper and deeper to get on the ball. Not sure if that's a halftime adjustment, or just what he wants to do.
USA takes a throw deep in Jamaica's half, pulls it back and works it around, ends with Dempsey having a shot blocked away.
Jamaica has made a decent start. More of the ball and the first chance of the game for the visiting side comes on the break, Shelton blasting up and over.
We're off again.
Teams are back out. Second half is about to get going.
Johnson send a ball over everybody and out of play. That should do it for the first half.
We'll have two added on to the first half. All USA, but not goals.
Torres leaves a cross short of where he wanted it.
Gomez called for a foul for climbing over the back. Another ball in from Zusi, header from Gomez was punched clear anyway.
Torres slots his shot over the top. USA has looked crisp. Jamaica, not so much. But the visitors are doing what they have to to hold a clean sheet at the moment.
We're deep into the first half, still 0-0. All USA in terms of chances and having the ball. The post has been rattled multiple times. And Now Dempsey is asking for a booking for Jamaica. He's been hit once or twice as well.
Gomez caught offside. Another chance missed, but this is one-way traffic.
How did that stay out????? Williams, what a rip, comes off the upper 90 and goes out across goal.
First real bit of deep defending for the USA now. Nosworthy (correction: Shelton getting through there) causing some problems and a corner coming. The firs ball is cleared and Dempsey brings the second into the USA's attacking third.
A combination of Dempsey and Jones give away a foul. Jamaica plays it long and it's back with the USA.
It's Zusi trying to supply now from wide and his cross is easily dealt with.
Zusi again!!!! Left-footed hit and he left it high. So many chances in the first 25 minutes for the USA.
Torres draws a foul. Another good chance from a set play.
The visiting team's goal is living a charmed life. Wow. Another chance goes begging.
Another post. Jamaica escapes again. Cherundolo with the hit and it deflects off the woodwork.
This time it's Bocanegra who just misses with his head. USA has been close three times already, but nothing to show.
Yellow Card Lovel Palmer
USA still on the attack, ball comes through the box, pops out to Johnson who plays in Jones, and he's whacked near the touchline. First booking of the night.
Jones just missed the header, on the doorstep and couldn't put it home.
Finally a couple of fouls called and the USA with a good look from a dangerous spot.
Ref is letting the game go. USA is very upset at the moment. No call for Gomez who went down in the box.
Flags waving throughout the crowd from the 9th to the 11th in honor of day. Fans are into it. Loud chants ringing around.
Jamaica finally getting a couple of touches in and now with a chance to cross, it moves through the box and the USA brings back out the other way.
ZUSI!!! OH! It's off the bar. Nice move from the team and the player and the shot is just a touch high. Bright, bright start.
Good opening spell for the home team, and as I say that Cameron and Cherundolo are not on the same page and a pass goes out of play.
Great ball from Jones and again Cherundolo is down the line. This time the service is a bit better but the danger is cleared once again.
USA stringing passes together early, trying to make a point in the opening minutes of keeping it.. Jamaica is back deep defending and the first attack of the night sees Cherundolo push a cross over the bar.
We're off ladies and gents. USA in the red and white kit, Jamaica in the yellow and black.
National anthems are done. Players are headed out on the field. This stadium is rocking tonight. Good show Columbus.
Teams are coming out and the stadium is already rocking with USA chants. This is going to be a hostile place for the Jamaicans tonight.
Hate to harp on the weather, but honestly, this is amazing for this kind of night. The fans are out in force. This couldn't be a much better home match.
The teams are leaving the pitch after warmups. We're getting close to go time here. Allen Ramsey on site to take you through it. Stick around and we'll keep you updated throughout.
We've just been told in the press box that tonight's formation for the USA is a 4-1-3-2, with Williams holding, Jones in front oh him, Torres on the left and Zusi on the right. Interesting.
Got a great night for footballing here in Columbus. Weather is absolutely perfect and the pitch looks like it's in great condition. Should be an exciting night with plenty on the line.
For Jamaica tonight, Miller, Nosworthy, Taylor, Morrison, Mariappa, Palmer, Watson, Austin, Shelton, Cummings, Johnson.
