PSV 4-1 Trabzonspor (Agg 6-2): Mertens, Matavz and Strootman on target to ease hosts into last 16

A brace from the Slovak and a goal apiece from the midfielders ensured a comfortable progression as visitors crash out

By Renger Dotinga

PSV has progressed to the Europa League round of 16, securing a comfortable 4-1 win in the second leg of its tie against Trabzonspor, to breeze through 6-2 on aggregate.

The Turks entered the match with a one-goal deficit, having been defeated 2-1 by the hosts in the first leg, and despite needing at least two goals to reach the last 16 the Trabzon outfit still held hopes of progression, evidenced by its attacking intentions in the opening stages.

The visitors piled on early pressure and were nearly rewarded with an opener in the seventh minute. Crisp link-up play on a counter put Adin through on goal, but Isaksson did brilliantly to parry the Turk’s effort at point-blank range. PSV responded positively, but shots from Toivonen and Willems failed to trouble Tolga Zengin in the visitor goal.

PSV however found the breakthrough from the penalty spot in the 15th minute. Trabzonspor right back Celutska brought down Dries Mertens in the area, and the Belgian stepped up to give his side a two-goal cushion.

Both sides upped their pace following the goal, with Trabzonspor looking for a lifeline while the hosts looked to put the match to bed early. The visitors were twice awarded a free kick in dangerous positions, but neither of Burak Yilmaz’s efforts managed to find their target.

All of PSV’s offensive play appeared to channel through goalscorer Mertens, and the Belgian again provided the spark his side needed in the 28th minute. The winger curled a perfectly weighted cross into the box from the left hand side, setting up Tim Matavz to head home from close range.

The home side maintained its offensive tempo, and put the tie beyond Trabzonspor’s reach 10 minutes later. Labyad teed up Kevin Strootman, and the Dutch international calmly slotted past Zengin.

The visitors mustered a response in the 43rd minute as they capitalized on poor defending by the hosts, with Burak Yilmaz offering his side hope. The PSV back line failed to clear a dangerous delivery into the box, and Henrique eventually picked out the Turk on the goal line to convert.

That was to be short-lived however, as the Trabzon side was dealt another blow just one minute later. Goalkeeper Tolga Zengin was judged to have handled the ball outside his area, bringing down Strootman in the process. The skipper was shown no lenience by the referee and was promptly dismissed.

PSV dominated the second half, visibly enjoying the freedom brought by its numerical advantage. Tim Matavz somewhat fortuitously netted his second of the night in the 54th minute; Kivrak again got a touch on the ball, but didn’t do enough to parry the effort off target.

Traffic was virtually one-way from thereon, with Trabzonspor appearing to have accepted its fate. PSV continued to dictate play in the visitors half, with substitute left back Erik Pieters looking to add another dimension to his side’s already flourishing attack.

The Dutch international linked up neatly with Mertens on the left flank, but neither of his crosses managed to find a teammate. Nothing became of last minute pressure from the hosts, as Yilmaz failed to spring the offside trap on more than one occasion.

The comfortable win for the Eindhoven side means it will meet Valencia in the round of 16, who advanced at the cost of Stoke City.
