Euro 2012 Player Ratings: England 1-0 Ukraine

Rooney header enough to see Three Lions through as Group D winners and send co-hosts packing

  • Joe Hart
    40
    10
    3.00

    Joe Hart

Despite the home side's first-half domination he had little to do other than to hold on impressively to Yarmolenko's curler. Was tested more after the break and made an impressive half block from Devic.

  • Glen Johnson
    36
    21
    2.50

    Glen Johnson

A weak link defensively and far too erratic to be considered a genuine attacking threat. All in all, it was a typical performance from the Liverpool right-back.

  • Ashley Cole
    37
    13
    3.00

    Ashley Cole

Coped admirably with the threat of Yarmolenko but as is often the case, was unable to get forward in the manner we are accustomed to seeing when he plays for Chelsea.

  • John Terry
    65
    14
    4.00

    John Terry

Made one vital early interception that denied Milevskiy a clear run in on goal and that set the tone for an impressive night’s work, capped by a magnificent clearance which forced the assistant referee into an incorrect call.

  • Joleon Lescott
    39
    9
    3.50

    Joleon Lescott

Continues to grow into his role with a quiet efficiency. His left-footedness brings a balance to his partnership with Terry which, save for a few hairy moments against Sweden, has done the job required, thus far.

  • Steven Gerrard
    153
    15
    4.00

Steven Gerrard Top of the Match

Magnificent set-piece delivery as ever and the provider of several superb raking passes. Trademark surging run and devilish cross represented a third assist of his increasingly productive tournament.

  • Ashley Young
    30
    20
    3.00

    Ashley Young

Came into this tournament as England’s form player and although this was better, he's still some way from hitting the levels he set for him over the course of an impressive season with Manchester United.

  • James Milner
    11
    46
    1.50

    James Milner

Picked largely for his defensive diligence but failed to provide Johnson with adequate protection, particularly in the first 25 minutes. Offered little going forward and was replaced with 20 minutes remaining.

  • Scott Parker
    35
    14
    3.50

    Scott Parker

Typically brave in the heart of England’s midfield and made one crucial early block to deny Devic from point-blank range. One superb lung-busting run which could have yielded a goal was brought to an unceremonious end by Tymoshchuk

  • Wayne Rooney
    44
    26
    2.50

    Wayne Rooney

Scored the goal from unmissable range, but there were undeniable signs of ring rust. His touch was less than assured and missed one presentable first-half headed opportunity.

  • Danny Welbeck
    29
    28
    3.00

    Danny Welbeck

His reputation continues to grow as a result of his selfless work for the team. Wasn't quite at the same level as he was against France or Spain, but still merited being picked ahead of Carroll.

Substitutions

  • Theo Walcott
    33
    8
    2.50

    Theo Walcott

With England's backs to the wall he wasn't provided with the opportunity to wreak havoc in the manner that had many demanding for him to be included from the start following his cameo against Sweden.

  • Andy Carroll
    45
    12

    Andy Carroll

Did an effective enough job as a late substitute winning headers and holding up play

  • Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain
    25
    11

    Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

Brought on for the last five and was unable to make a mark.

  • Andriy Pyatov
    10
    23
    1.50

Andriy Pyatov Flop of the Match

Was overworked against France but enjoyed a much quieter evening here until the ghastly error which brought about Rooney's opener. Had already flapped horrendously at one Gerrard delivery.

  • Yevhen Selin
    5
    13
    2.50

    Yevhen Selin

Not the most elegant of players but he possesses a decent left foot and showed a few neat touches in advanced positions.

  • Yevhen Khacheridi
    9
    8
    2.50

    Yevhen Khacheridi

Looked far happier alongside Rakitskiy than the somewhat cumbersome Mikhalik and was happy to let his defensive partner do the majority of the dirty work while he mopped up efficiently.

  • Yaroslav Rakytskyy
    17
    5
    3.50

    Yaroslav Rakytskyy

A mystery as to why he hadn’t been selected earlier in the tournament. Built like a tank, the Shakhtar Donetsk defender relished the physical battle and was confident and assured in possession. Looks a top player.

  • Anatoliy Tymoshchuk
    18
    7
    3.00

    Anatoliy Tymoshchuk

Neat and tidy as ever and kept things ticking over in his usual way. Was far more productive in possession than he was the other night against France when his wayward passing caused his own side several problems

  • Denys Garmash
    12
    6
    3.00

    Denys Garmash

Another who probably should have been introduced into this tournament at an earlier juncture. Provided the link between midfield and attack that the lacklustre Voronin had failed to do in his side’s two previous matches.

  • Oleh Husyev
    12
    5
    2.50

    Oleh Husyev

Doesn’t look the most capable defensively but has a buccaneering attitude that is to be admired. Went close with one blast midway through the first-half which only narrowly cleared Hart’s crossbar.

  • Yevhen Konoplyanka
    23
    3
    3.50

    Yevhen Konoplyanka

The scurrying winger gave England all sorts of problems early on and enjoyed the space he was afforded by Milner who failed to track back on numerous occasions.

  • Andriy Yarmolenko
    21
    4
    3.00

    Andriy Yarmolenko

A silky player with an eye for the spectacular had a hard night up against Cole but showed flashes of the ability which have seen him billed as Shevchenko’s heir apparent.

  • Artem Milevsky
    11
    10
    2.00

    Artem Milevsky

The hulking centre forward attempted to use his considerable frame to unsettle England's central defenders, but Terry and Lescott coped with pretty much everything in the air. Missed an absolute sitter shortly after England opened the scoring, which prompted calls of Sheva, Sheva from the stands.

  • Marko Devic
    17
    6
    3.50

    Marko Devic

The clever forward was a threat all night. He may lack of the player he replaced in Shevchenko but his extra mobility was a problem, particularly for Lescott. Had a goal unluckily ruled out, but shouldn't really have given Hart a chance from such close range having had so much time to set himself.

Substitutions

  • Bohdan Butko
    5
    9

    Bohdan Butko

Another late substitute who made no impression on the game.

  • Serhiy Nazarenko
    6
    9

    Serhiy Nazarenko

Huffed and puffed as a late substitute but wasted one crossing opportunity and blazed another shot miles over.

  • Andriy Shevchenko
    22
    5
    2.00

    Andriy Shevchenko

Came on for the last 20 minutes or so but was hardly given a sniff. An undistinguished end to a glorious international career, perhaps.
