Player Ratings: Wolves 2-1 Sunderland

Stephen Fletcher the man of the match with an impressive brace, as Sebastian Larsson misses a great opportunity to put the game beyond the hosts in a great comeback

Wayne Hennessey

Had a few comfortable touches in the first-half but was never truly tested in the opening 45 minutes. Was at fault in allowing Richardson’s opener in at the near post but denied Larsson's penalty effort with a great save and reacted quickly to initiate a counter attack which saw Wolves score.

Jody Craddock

A reasonable display from the man replacing Roger Johnson in the middle of the back-line. The defender made some good challenges, but was occasionally outmuscled by the hard-to-handle Sessegnon.

Stephen Ward

Made a great goal-line clearance after Sessegnon’s close-range effort at the end of the first-half to keep it scoreless at the break and carried his committed performance into the second half.

Christophe Berra

Did well to repel Bendtner and Dong, as well as making his fair share of challenges elsewhere including several desperate clearances out of the Wolves area.

Ronald Zubar

The well-built full-back made good use of his strength throughout but also showed great nous with some well-timed challenges.

David Edwards

His energetic display allowed his team to keep the ball on the move but failed to capitalise on some decent chances.

Stephen Hunt

Remained constantly busy on the left-flank and created a handful of chances for his side with his dangerous crosses.

Matthew Jarvis

A quiet first-half for the winger but woke up the second and did well to prove a constant danger to the Sunderland defence. Put in a great delivery for Fletcher’s first goal.

Jamie O'Hara

Looked energetic throughout, but failed to find the pass and opted to fire from distance on more than one occasion. Was lucky not to get caught out clearly handling during Fletcher’s second, but was in a good position to create the goal.

A sensational brace for a man who is fast becoming the cornerstone of the Wolves attack. His two well taken goals proved the difference in the end.

Kevin Doyle

Not a particularly effective day for the forward but was unfortunate not to see many clear-cut chances come his way.

A composed substitute appearance from the defender.

Adam Hammill

Didn’t do too much after coming on late, but was part of the stubborn midfield that prevented Sunderland from pressing for their own equaliser.

Sylvan Ebanks-Blake

Held the ball up well and kept the game in Wolves’ favour after coming on to add to the hosts’ attack.

Keiren Westwood

Had a close encounter in the opening 15 minutes, as Fletcher’s header nearly caught out the young ‘keeper, but Simon Mignolet’s stand-in saved calmly on the line. Wasn’t threatened until the Wolves’ goals where he could possibly have done more to get a better hand to Fletcher’s second effort at least.

Phil Bardsley

Sometimes rushed his play out of the back and occasional didn’t know how to deal with O’Hara and company. Jarvis constantly badgered him in the second-half and let the winger run past him too many times.

Wes Brown

Kept his cool during the constant attacking from Sunderland’s opponents and made his fair share of hefty tackles to keep the Wolves attackers at bay. His positioning was out though when it came to the Wolves goals and didn’t do enough to pressure the hosts’ attackers.

Kieran Richardson

Struck his opener for Sunderland sweetly to take the punch out of Wolves’ slight dominance over the north east outfit. Made a terrific clearance just minutes later to deny Wolves an equaliser in all-round impressive display.

John O'Shea

Was sometimes caught out by the movement of likes of Hunt and Doyle, but positioned himself well to keep out their attackers for the majority of their advances into the Sunderland third. However could have done better to mark Fletcher during the Wolves goal.

Lee Cattermole

Commanded his men well from the middle of the park, but didn’t seem to involve himself too much during the phases of play, although made the odd good challenge and kept the play moving during a Black Cat’s attack.

Sebastian Larsson

Not a bad performance from the former Birmingham man who kept up his attacking and defensive duties well. Was lucky to win his team a penalty in the second-half and equally fortunate to not get a booking for his dive, but didn’t make the most of it and was denied by Hennessey’s good save.

Jack Colback

The youngster looked energetic throughout, but didn’t get himself in the game enough to make too much of a difference, with the play concentrated down the wings for most of the game.

Stéphane Sessegnon

3.0

An inspired performance from the attacker who seems to have found his place in the Sunderland line-up out on the left-wing and cutting inside to immediately become a danger to the Wolves defence. His ball to set up Richardson’s opener was inch perfect for the overlapping left-back to either set up a goal or score one himself.

Dong-Won Ji

Some good movement from the striker making his first start for the north east outfit. Dong worked well with the ever advancing Sessegnon and almost created an opener for his side through the positive interplay between the duo and the Korean’s fluent movement. However, his passing at times could have been more efficient, leaving team-mates a little short at times.

Nicklas Bendtner

Rarely threatened Hennessey’s net and made a couple of bad decisions in shooting when there was a better pass on offer. The Dane never really got his chances and failed to offer much to his side.
