Chivas vs Queretaro
Top seed Guadalajara fell into an early hole as the Apertura liguilla kicked off, falling 2-1 to cool-finishing Queretaro. Carlos Bueno scored both goals for Queretaro but Jorge Enriquez pulled back a potentially vital for Chivas goal deep into injury time.
Marco Fabian was absent from the Chivas starting lineup after picking up a knock, leaving Omar Arellano up top with Erick Torres, Alberto Medina on the left wing and Jesus Sanchez on the right. Victor Hernadez started in goal for Chivas owing to Luis Ernesto Michel's suspension.
Former Chivas man Adolfo Bautista got the start up top for Queretaro, alongside Uruguayan Carlos Bueno, who was coming off a 10-goal haul in the regular season.
The home side threatened within a minute of kickoff, as Bueno missed a great chance off a free kick. Queretaro continued apply pressure in the early minutes of the game, and was amply rewarded in the 10th minute.
Bueno received the ball just outside the area and found space to turn and shoot. The effort was perfectly struck and the curling shot left Hernandez with no chance as it sailed into the top corner.
Chivas tried to respond, but Jesus Sanchez's header went wide in the 14th minute and Liborio Sanchez had to be alert in the Queretaro goal to prevent Medina from squeezing off a shot from point-blank range.
The visitors would not find much more luck as the half went on, as Queretaro's defense held strong. The home side was more conservative after going up a goal, and though it occasionally got forward into promising positions, nothing came of it as the half petered out.
The break did little to revitalize the tempo of the game, but Alberto Medina added some electricity to the proceedings 10 minutes into the second half when he somehow dribbled through three Queretaro defenders and cut into the box. However, he wasted his excellent work when he misfired badly.
The game started to take a more physical tone as the second half dragged on, with fouls by both sides slowing the pace of the game and the referee showing four yellow cards in a 20 minute period.
Queretaro finally broke through for a second in the 69th minute. Emilio Lopez found an inch of space down the left and centered for Bueno, who expertly got around Magallon and connected for the second goal.
Chivas finally started to come to life in the final 10 minutes of the game, and peppered the Queretaro goal with shots from distance. Liborio Sanchez was equal to each one, but could do little to stop Chivas pulling one back as substitute Jorge Henriquez rose above Efrain Cortes to direct a header in the far corner in injury time.
Though Queretaro had beaten Chivas 1-0 in Guadalajara during the regular season, the win was Queretaro's first ever at home against its opposition and sets up a well-poised encounter at the Estadio Omnilife next Saturday.
