Corinthians 0-0 Palmeiras: Four men sent off as stalemate clinches 2011 Brasileirao for jubilant home side
In an uninspiring performance, Corinthians secured the Brasileiro title with a goalless draw against its fierce rival in the Paulista derby

Corinthians has been crowned as 2011 Brasileiro champion after a bad tempered encounter with rival Palmeiras ended 0-0, with both sides reduced to nine men.
Chances were at a premium throughout the contest, with wild challenges and exuberant officiating the order of the day. But the home fans didn't care, sparking joyous scenes at the final whistle as the club held off the challenge of Vasco to take the title.
The Pacaembu was filled to capacity with expectant Corinthians fans for the Paulista derby that would determine this year’s Brasileiro champions. With the title in there to be won, the Musketeers just needed to avoid defeat win a first title since 2005.
Respects were paid to Socrates before the game and it began at a similarly somber pace. Corinthians looked content to take its time and not rush into attacking, and Palmeiras therefore enjoyed the majority of possession.
After 25 minutes the home side had a penalty shout turned down when the ball seemed to hit Leandro Amaro’s arm from Alex’s deflected free kick. The referee did not award a penalty, suggesting he believed the incident to be ball-to-hand.
When news of Diego Souza’s goal for Vasco filtered through, the Alviverde fans raised the decibels and anxiety began to sweep across the stadium. The team's first chance of the game came in the 41st minute when Jorge Valdivia teed up Cicinho but his shot was deflected just past the post by Leandro Amaro.
On the stroke of halftime Alessandro and Willian combined well, surging into the box. Willian took too long to pull the trigger and was dispossessed by Leandro Amaro, claiming for a non-existent penalty.
Within three minutes of the restart Valdivia was given his marching orders after catching Jorge Henrique with a stray arm. The decision looked harsh but it gave the home fans reason to raise their voices.
With just over 20 minutes to play Jorge Henrique slipped a pass through to Fabio Santos down the left wing. The fullback put a great ball into the box but it was turned over by Henrique and the danger was cleared.
In the 72nd minute the set piece specialists, Palmeiras, rattled the post. Marcos Assuncao’s delivery was nodded on to the woodwork by Fernandao and Gerley could not find the target with the rebound.
Moments later the teams were leveled up when Wallace was shown a red card for a clumsy challenge on Maikon Leite. It was another debatable decision and it set the game up for a nervy final 15 minutes. Palmeiras got the ball in the back of the net with 10 minutes left on the clock but it was chalked off for offside.
Tempers erupted in the closing moments as Joao Vitor was sent off for a challenge on Jorge Henrique. A mass brawl ensued and Leandro Castan was also shown red for his role in the fracas. Luan should have gone for another kick on Jorge Henrique and will likely be retrospectively banned for the start of next year.
The celebrations began early as news of Vasco's draw filtered through. The red cards did little to dampen the celebrations of the Timao fans at the Pacaembu, with the title dedicated to Socrates.
