Angola has exited the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations after a 2-0 defeat to Cote d’Ivoire at the Stade D’Angondje in Malabo thanks to goals from Emmanuel Eboue and Wilfried Bony.
Cote D’Ivoire and Sudan have qualified to the knock out stage in Group B after having come top with nine points and second with four points respectively. The Falcons of Jediane progressed based on superior goal difference over the Palancas Negras.
Ivory Coast, the pre-tournament favorite, benched key players including Arsenal’s Gervinho and substantive captain Didier Drogba, who came in later as a substitute, but was superior throughout the game.
Galatasaray right back Eboue put the west Africans in the lead in the first half and that score line remained into the interval.
When the game resumed, a determined Ivorian side was prepared to aggravate the woes of the 2010 AFCON host and that was perfectly executed with some amount of pressure on the defense of the Angolans.
Vitese’s Bony capitalized on a defensive howler when guardsman Dany headed the ball past his own goalkeeper Wilson Alegre allowing the Ivorian striker to quickly follow up with a tap into a yawning net.
It was a sad ending for coach Lito Vidigal who was hoping to improve on his quarterfinal finish on home soil two years ago, but a happy ending for local coach Francois Zahouis.
Ivory Coast will now play co-host Equatorial Guinea on Feb. 4.
